On the back of the box, there is a block of text which reads:

In Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Griggs is a USMC staff sergeant who fights alongside the player-controlled character during the American USMC missions, as well as the joint missions towards the end of the game.

It is also worth noting that Griggs does not make an appearance in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
