Description

Catan is the Xbox Live Arcade version of the classic Klaus Teuber board game, Settlers of Catan, developed in cooperation with the original creator. The player assume the role of a colonist, modelled after famous leaders, on the imaginary island of Catan. Through strategy and trading, three to four players vie for control over the valuable territory and resources of this uncharted wilderness. Game modes include AI opponents, matches against human players over Xbox Live and ranked competitive play. A certain amount of rules can be tweaked for these games.

The game board is composed of nineteen randomly arranged hexagonal tiles. Each of them represents a certain resource. Players can build roads, establish settlements or raise armies to earn victory points. The first to reach ten points wins. Gameplay is turn-based, with timers to keep the pace steady. The playing field is shown through a flat, top-down overview or a 3D render. Voice chat is supported, but thoughts can also be communicated through graphical emotions - even to the use of influencing other players' strategy or decisions.
