Description
Sam & Max 302: The Tomb of Sammun-Mak is the second episode of the third Sam & Max season named Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse. After the happenings in the first episode Sam & Max discover an old cinema projector with four movie reels. These show the adventures of Sameth and Maximus, Sam & Max's ancestors from the early 20th century. The player takes their roles. The four reels have four scenarios: beating a challenge of uncovering the mysteries of the "Sphunx", raiding a tomb for the mysterious toy box known from the first episode, solving a theft on a train and the ending. The player can switch between the movies at any time. This is not only for convenience but also needed to solve some puzzles, e.g. they have to learn how to read hieroglyphs in the first reel before they can proceed in the third.
Of course Max's psychic powers once again play an important part. This time there are three available: switching the reels, ventriloquism and temporarily hiding into a can. The rest of the gameplay is similar to the former seasons: the player walks through the levels, collects items and uses them to solve puzzles. Dialogues are a ring menu similar to Mass Effect where the player only chooses the topic instead of the whole sentence. Unlike traditional adventure games the movement of Sam is not controlled by point & click but by holding the left mouse button and dragging the mouse in the desired direction (or alternatively with the keyboard keys). Interactions with items or persons are carried out with a single mouse button.
Like the Tales of Monkey Island series single episodes weren't available for purchase at the initial release. Users were required to buy the five episodes as a whole as they are released on a monthly basis.
