Overview

Excerpt from Diary of a Working Clergyman in Australia and Tasmania: Kept During the Years 1850-1853; Including His Return to England by Way of Java, Singapore, Ceylon, and Egypt

As on my return to England by way of Java, Singapore, and the Overland Route, I repeatedly did duty in Batavia, Ceylon, and on board the Indian steam-vessels, it will not be irrelevant to my present purpose to include in this publication the Diary which I kept during that period. Thus the present publication will contain notices of my proceedings from the time I reached Adelaide, in South Australia, which took place about the middle of the year 1850, until I arrived in Southampton in the early part of 1854. During this comparatively long period there will be necessarily numerous gaps in the Diary. The occupant of a quiet country chaplaincy in Tasmania does not encounter very exciting adventures.
