Excerpt from Integrating Disparate Databases for Composite-Answers

Many important information systems require multiple independent databases to work together within and/or across organizational boundaries in order to increase productivity. We refer to this type of systems as Composite Information Systems (CIS). A key area of research in CIS is logical connectivity which deals with the process of accessing disparate databases in concert for composite-answers. The major problems that need to be overcome to attain logical connectivity include contradiction, inconsistency, and ambiguity.

This paper presents an approach to resolve these problems through enhancing the semantic power of the database integration. This approach exploits concepts drawn from frame-based knowledge representation and rule-based inferencing. An object-oriented prototype is also presented to illustrate the process involved in formulating composite-answers where different levels of abstraction are required.

Key Words And Phrases: Distributed Database Systems, Object-Oriented Programming, Organizational Information Systems, Strategic Computing.
