This book is a treasure! I do contract Java development, and many of the customers I've worked for are still doing thick client development using Swing. This book isn't limited to GUI-related topics, but it does cover them very well and I have found Pro Java Programming to be an extremely valuable resources. The topics are covered clearly and in depth and there are many of them. The book also contains alot of useful code snippets and utilities that (knock on wood) have all worked as advertised when I tried them. Besides containing good descriptions of many topics, this book doesn't succumb to the flaws that I find in most other programming books, such as being to wordy. I also like the fact that even though the topics are a bit advanced you don't have to be a Java expert to follow the material.

The writing in this book is very good and easy to understand and that's one of the reasons why this book is the best Java title I've purchased in a long time -- maybe ever. That and the fact that it covers material that I've had trouble finding detailed information on anywhere else. One of the things I really appreciate is that the chapters are all independent of one another and you don't have to read it from the beginning to understand one chapter. That makes it a valuable resource for me because I can just pick up the book and read the chapter about security for example and understand that topic without reading the whole thing. Thats how I like to use computer books and this one is great for that kind of useage. I give it five stars!!

There are two things that I like about this book. First, the writing is very clear and easy to understand, and second, the topics covered are relevant to the work that Java developers do. There are plenty of books that cover beginner-level topics, but for programmers who've moved beyond the basics, the pickings are pretty slim. This book covers the advanced topics that I need to know about and that I've had trouble finding information on, and it's full of lots of helpful hints and tips, in addition to detailed coverage of those topics. If you're doing either client- or server-side Java development, I recommend picking up a copy of this book. Although it does not cover J2EE stuff like servlets, Java Server Pages, or Enterprise Javabeans, it does cover just about every other advanced topics that a Java programmer needs to know about.

I enjoy reading this book. It was very helpful and I refer to it often. It offers a higher level of Java related material than the beginner books. This book is easy to read and understand. The XML chapter was genius. I highly recommend this book.

Even though I have programmed Java for some time I did not know how to use all its functions. I learned about many of them from this book such as XML, sockets, and gained better understanding of trees and tables components. Many good topics are covered in depth and the writing is easy to understand.
