Excerpt from Simulating Distributed Database Operating Systems and Evaluating Concurrency Control Protocol Performance

It is, however, of interest to be able to evaluate a variety of concurrency protocols and other data base Operating. Systems modules under identical conditions, to test which kinds are most suitable under different conditions and loads. We have thus designed a distributed database simulator, which if imple mented would allow researchers to have one more tool in performance evaluation. For reasons explained in the paper we have decided at this point to test the concurrency control protocols, which were the focus of our interest in the special case of centralized environment only.

The simulator provides a concrete, and often the only practical way of judging the merits of dif fereat strategies under various c'onditions of operation. It can provide statistical insight into the dif fereat factors that affect performance, and the correlation of these factors with desirable features. It can thus be also used for fine-tuning existing protocols. Finally, it can be used as a verification tool and for enhancing our intuition about the issues involved.
