Library Journal - Library Journal
The fourth in a series of world database directories, World Databases in Patents is not the resource it could be. Its intended scope is intellectual property databases and any related electronic files available on a worldwide basis. Master records are listed in a straight alphabetic sequence with by-products (online, CD-ROM, tape) shown as sometimes unwieldy subentries. Files include database name, publisher, start year, language, update frequency, content, and so forth. Pricing information, when included, is not done consistently. A few U.S. Patent and Trademark Office products, for example, are priced in British pounds while DIALOG files are listed in U.S. dollars. The subject index tends to be more generic than field specific and includes some questionable choices for this topic ("money laundering," "religion"). There are also some surprising omissions: the federal and state versions of TRADEMARKSCAN are not listed at all. This reference will be of some interest to intellectual property collections, but it is a marginal purchase at best. Most libraries would be better off to stick with the pricier but more versatile and accessible two-volume Gale Directory of Databases, 1995 (Gale Research, 1994).-Johanna Johnson, Dallas P.L.
Booknews
A new directory that offers access to databases useful to intellectual property researchers and information professionals. It includes coverage of trade names, patents, trademarks, and standards used throughout the world, and includes on-line, CD-ROM, and real-time databases, diskette, magnetic tape, fax, wire, and data broadcast information. The alphabetically arranged entries include reviews with database names, subject description, years of coverage, number of records, etc.; and evaluative information examining the variations between each on-line host, medium, or format. Includes a list of all addresses referenced in the various entries and indexes by subject and database name. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
