I don't read many technical books straight through, but this one is well written with a good conversational tone that makes it a pleasant read.
The material is somewhat out of date, since a lot has changed in Java since the book was written in 2000, but as a thoughtful discussion of programming issues in general that happens to use Java for its examples, there is plenty of relevant info here.
