I checked out a number of java books before deciding on this one, it was a great choice. It has special notes for C++ developers and is a broad but in-depth introduction to java starting with basics and moving through all the basic topics. Volume II is definitely on the to-read list.

I didn't read this book front to back.
I might be wrong, but I don't think it's meant to be read like that?
Maybe it is. If so, then I am not a huge fan of it.
But if it's meant to be a reference book, then I really like it :).
Lots of good, succinct bits about things you might want to know about the Java language. Also a really good index (for the digital version) for hopping around.
