It's quite dated, but this book is still one of my favorite intro-to-programming books. Basic programming language concepts are explained as well as I've seen anywhere, and I've enjoyed reading and rereading the "fun" sections at the end of each chapter, which provide some interesting computer industry history. Not surprisingly, there's an anti-Microsoft bias, but I can live with that.
