I have read five Java Davis books, which are typically populated by a quirky mix of characters with histories bordering on fantastical. Even so, somehow this crafty author manages to make it all believable. And just when I thought nothing she could write would surprise me, she pens this heartwarming tale of an utterly normal family that comes together in a time of need.

Metal: A Treasure Hunt is a contemporary fiction novel written by Java Davis. The underlying story, however, has historical roots that date back to the 1700s. Shaker Falls Park was located on land that had been in dispute since colonial times, and the land figured in the struggle between the French and English, who both courted Native American tribes in their attempt to control the area. For homesteaders, living ...more

An intriguing book. The blurb and what I read about the book makes you think it’s about metal detecting and its history, but it isn’t about that at all. It’s about the dynamics of a family trying to sort out their lives and problems and get on with each other - which is much more interesting. The way it presents itself is as a quiet, slow moving study of how to make adjustments to the twists and turns of our ordinary lives, and how to adjust to the needs of others. And In that, the book presents

Very strange book indeed. While I definitely could tell it was being written by an amateur, it did have a decent story. The characters were believable enough as well as the story.
My biggest negative was the ending. "What do you think Frank found?" was the very last line in the book. So I read this whole book and this is how it ends? No, I should have known when prior to reading it, a week after publication and there were no reviews, not one. I gave this book an extra star just for the author's ...more

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
With a cast of characters that are appealing and likable, Ms. Davis has written a book with a great deal of historical research as part of the plot. I would bet that almost everybody has thought about a metal detector and the "treasure" it might find for them. The family interactions are written well, especially the step-father relationship, passions, and awareness of emotions in this family dynamic. Perhaps a little amateurish, but ...more

I won this book in a goodreads giveaway.
This is a very quick read with very large print. So more like a long, short story. I did enjoy reading it and the characters were very interesting, but the shortness of the story did not provide enough detail to really understand and gather affection for the characters. I would recommend this for a quick read at the right price

A good contemporary fiction, short read with just enough credibility to it's plot. Based on what I read, this book explained the intricate family relationships and I applaud the author for that. Off beat but likeable and readable. I received a free book that I had won via Goodreads Giveaway. Thank you, Darlene Cruz

Java Davis spent fifteen years in the printing and marketing fields. After retiring early due to a disability, she turned to writing books as a way to work at home. A perpetual wanderer earlier in life, she draws heavily on a lifetime of diverse locales, unusual experiences and varied friendships.
