Lots of typos, and one major mistake in how the author explains how the switch statement works. First impression was that the book was not worth reading. However, I have learned to appreciate it for its overview of Java concepts. It is useful as a precursor to reading more detailed presentations of the material. I find myself going back and reading it quite often.
This is a good book for someone looking to understand Java for the first time. The version I read talked about Java 1.5 (current is 1.7), so some methods and capabilities have changed.
PROS:
+ Easy and straight-forward way to approach new concepts.
+ Enforces object oriented thinking.
+ Covers most of the useful Java capabilities used in college (80% I would say)
CONS:
- Uses an old version, if you can get the new edition of the book it would be better.
