generally good

Good book, but it is overfocused on the legacy staff like Applets, UI, etc. Good for newbies as well, explains base computer science principles

When I started learning Java, I was searching for a book that offers a high level of details, but in the same time, considers the fact that I'm starting from the bottom.
Such a book would talk about general features at first hand, makes me a simple Java user, and ready to attack advanced features to master the language and all of the SE.
Core Java, offers more than this. Examples compilation in a manner that you can do them as training labs, before you see the code/solution, which is very efficien

Good book. I guess it is about as good as you can get while trying to shove several so called advanced topics into one book. This is still more on the api and rules side as opposed to example of good use cases to use things like custom ClassLoaders etc.
