Ronin is not a stealth game. The self-confessed Gunpoint rip-off is a frantic, physics-defying, blood-spattering, minimalist tale of revenge. It culminates in a superb final level, offering two equally powerful endings. And while its length might leave you craving more murder-fun, it does offer a new game plus: go destroy your enemies all over again, in style.

Ronin is a good, engaging and often difficult game that will certainly appeal to those who are intrigued by the mix of stealth, sword killing, and impressive jumps.

Altogether, Ronin creates an entirely novel experience that’s given a solid boost from the sound and graphic design.

Ronin has a brilliant concept, but its execution leaves something to be desired. The gameplay demands a level of precision and control that the game doesn't completely deliver.

If you like killing enemies with a katana like Kill Bill, this indie-action-platformer could be your game. The design is quite near to the also platform-title Gunpoint and it combines it with stealth- and assassination-elements like in Mark of the Ninja. The combat is quite difficult, sometimes frustrating, especially because of its try-and-error passages, that can freak you out. The Soundtrack is great and the cartoon-graphics-style fits well to the setting. UI is simple to learn and timing your actions is the key for success in the game.

Ronin have a lot of good ideas, but fails in its execution to be a better game.

Ronin is a remarkably average game. When it works, it's kind of fun, but there just isn't enough here to maintain interest, and it has nothing that we haven't seen before.

In short this is an action puzzle game - with the emphasis on the dynamic puzzle element.

Starting from the story. There is almost none. There's just a photo and a hint of revenge. And for me this was spot on. I've started making up my own story to the picture wandering on what might have lead to the revenge aspect and for the lack of story I really did enjoy it weirdly.

Visually it's a nice looking 2D platformer looking game. Not pixel art but has that vibe. In all looks good - nothing to awe about but nothing to complain about.

Best part of the game is the game play. In short - it moves and feels like gunpoint - you can jump with selected trajectory, hang by a line attached to ceiling or wall - up to the point where combat starts. And this is where the game starts to shine. As the hints say - it's not a stealth game - kill everyone. Once the combat starts the game turns into turn based puzzle. Somewhat similar to Frozen Synapse everyone indicates there next move and all of them are executed at the same time - though different enemies have different priority - so for example you jump before some enemies start shooting while different enemy type shoots before you jump and you have to take that in the account. It's easy at first but gets really tricky later on when you have to deal with multiple enemies of different types. And it's really satisfying when pulled of correctly. It's easy to mess up though - luckily the checkpoints are quite often so repeating a sequence does not cost any progress.

The game is divided into 15 levels and 5 sections/bosses. As easily deducted each section is 3 levels long. Two of which order you to hack some terminals to find location of the boss which is the final level of each chapter. But it's always more of the same - kill all the guards, don't kill by-standers, don't raise alarms. The levels are pretty nicely designed. Additionally if you complete the optional objectives you receive a skill point - really worth picking up - that adds options you can use on your fights - i.e. throwing the sword or knocking guards out.

Overall was really with the game and had a lot of fun completing it. Don't have really any problems to point out with it - though this will not be a game for everyone. First and foremost this is a puzzle. But a fun puzzle.

You can hop around slicing through enemies, throw your sword or sneak along the ceiling and score stealthy kills.

Unfortunately, as soon as you enter turn-based combat, the game becomes a lot clunkier, with limited controls (you can't walk, climb edges or instantly pull yourself to a grapple point) and artificial hurdles in the form of the lockdown mechanic.

Thus, despite the hint that tells you "It's not a stealth game. Just kill everyone" RONIN's best experienced while "cheating" the mechanics and abusing your movement without getting noticed by the enemy. Hold Space to issue commands instantly.

The controls aren't changeable and there are quite a few glitches leaving the heroine getting stuck in the walls, but the game's pretty unique in its genre and as long as you can avoid getting stuck in turn-based, RONIN delivers.

You can feel the polish that was put into the development of it while you abuse the simple combat mechanics. For what it is, It is a near perfect game made by three people. It'll definitely keep you entertained for a few hours at least. However, This game uses a blatantly ripped off style from gunpoint, and the story, or lack thereof, was basically kill bill. Seriously a samurai sword wielding blonde chick in a motorcycle outfit getting revenge on random dudes? Kill Bill. Despite its lack of originality in style, the gameplay is fun, with the turn based system being unique, though a bit broken. This game would probably be better as a tablet game. Expand
