The Evil Within has achieved something that not many games have lately: It scared me. Thanks for Mikami-san!

As the Japanese survival horror genre goes, The Evil Within feels a bit old fashion but in a good way. It certainly has the potential of becoming a cult classic. [Nov 2014]

If you like the idea of Resident Evil 4 crossed half-and-half with Silent Hill then The Evil Within is the game for you. Just be prepared to put up with 30 FPS.

If you like old-school third-person action games with horror elements, I'd recommend picking up The Evil Within on a console, possibly at a price cut. It will definitely scratch the itch of someone who has been pining for a return to the older days of gaming, but everyone else who has come to expect that certain layer of polish likely won't be amused.

The Evil Within is an unoriginal but interesting concept that keeps the player on the edge of his or hers seat and makes the blood flow faster. It's a shame that outdated gameplay mechanics surfaces fairly quickly (and begins to frustrate shortly after). The game is quite easy to be memorized move by move, room by room - and that kills all the horror. The Evil Within is not bad at the survival part, it's quite good as a stealth game and mediocre as a shooter. It has an interesting story and dull characters - all of that can be fun, but I think expectations were much bigger.

Despite darkness being a horror game’s natural habitat, living so much in other game’s shadows limits The Evil Within from being the genre redefining classic it really should have been.

For every brilliant moment, there's a handful only worthy of exasperated annoyance.

Despite it's shortcomings, this is one of my favourite Mikami games. But Chapter 15 is so anti-climatic. As a set-piece, it's awesome and exciting, but as an actual boss fight it's terrible. It's like they couldn't figure out a way for you to properly fight it, so they said **** it" and just threw it out. And then there's no memorable dialogue or exchange between Ruvik and Sebastian which is wasted potential.

That said, I'm pleasantly surprised by the story. It's deeper than I thought it would be, and it clicks nicely.

All in all, 9 or so/10 for me. My gripes are mainly on the tech side, which I have a feeling is due to id Tech 5 and them not knowing what to do with it. In many ways it surpasses RE4, and in some ways it also falls short. But The Evil Within is better than RE4 in my eyes. That may change in subsequent playthroughs, but I love the creative effort put into this game.

It's challenging but fair. It's visually appealing and has some of the most impressive texture art in my recent memory. That doesn't mean that the textures are from the sharpest end of the stick it's just that it seems that thanks to idTech5 almost all the textures contain unique features in them. Level design is very organic. Sound and music is ok but not very remarkable. Monster design is very good. Controls are fairly responsive after you active the 60 FPS mode. I didn't find the film black bars problematic but rather played the game without them. The idea is that there are effects based on taking in and out the black film bars on top and bottom part of the screen. Adjusting FOV allows you to see around. The game has few design flaws regarding the stealth elements. With ammunition very scarce that is the perfect recipe to some really challenging difficulty spikes inside the game. Plot has been written in such a way they player should play the game through at least twice to understand the plot in its entirely. It has lots of interesting details and stuff that recent games have not had. Overall it's a great game and very much something akin to a spiritual remake of Resident Evil 4. Additional note about Windows-PC version is that you might have to adjust the game through the console to make it work the way you want even with the patch that fixed many of the issues reviews here at Metacritic complain about. Good concept and game play, but dear god what did you do to the PC version of this game!? Wide-screen view and locked frame rate! This game is 360 graphics by far and on steam it say the minimum requirements is an i7 processor? Get out of here with that crap, hopefully there is an HD update to fix this nonsense. Will play once that has been fixed and update my review. Expand

Don't tell me it's going to be a sneak kill when the guy just turns around and chops your damn head off, you dumb f**king idiot devs.

Not recommended. Godawful frame rate on a high end system. No I will not bother with patches. IF you cannot be arsed to produce a game that doesn't work properly first time around, I will not recommend it, I will not give it good marks, I will not suggest that my friends go out and buy a copy.

You screwed up. Bethesda, stick to your damn Elder Scrolls ffs.

The game suffers from many technical problems that mar the experience. The game has an extremely low frame rate. The highest frame rate The Evil WIthin will reach is 30. The game also has these annoying black bars that ruin the experience by making it impossible to see what is going on during the game. The Evil Within was created by Shinji Mikami the creator of the Resident Evil series. I personally love Resident Evil 4 and it is one of my favorite games of all time. The game reuses the same combat from Resident Evil 4 which is not ok. Resident Evil 4 came out about 10 years ago. The game also features horrible clunky stealth sections where you use throwable distractible objects and then sneak behind the enemy and use a one use stealth weapon to kill them. The game uses these awful run a bit sections where you run from enemies in terrible run sections where it is hard to see due to the horrible camera which gets stuck on things easily. The Evil Within is the worst horror game I have ever played and one of the worst video games I have ever played. It was so bad that couldn’t finish it. Resident Evil 7 is coming out soon I hope for the love of god that is takes no influences from this game. The Evil Within gets my lowest rating of a 0/10. Expand
