What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“I consider Rodina to be in "ongoing development". This means that I will keep adding new features and game content as time goes on.

I personally do not favor the concept of "Early Access", as it implies that Rodina has a definite release date with a target feature set. This is not the case- Rodina's development is more reminiscent of games like Minecraft and Dwarf Fortress, where you could imagine features being added forever, and designations like "Released" and "Beta" are entirely arbitrary.

Although I am super proud of it, Rodina is in Early Access because I don't believe that the game has enough gameplay features to justify selling it to people expecting a full, polished game. Once the game is ready, it will be taken out of Early Access.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I will wait until Rodina has significantly more character gameplay - bases to invade, the ability to board enemy ships, NPCs to interact with - before taking the game out of Early Access. This is a bit of a judgement call, since Rodina isn't intended to have a traditional release, but more gameplay is a base requirement for passing that milestone.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“I plan on adding boarding actions, NPCs, and settlements to the game. Right now the only interior you can enter is your own ship. The big mid-term goal will be adding other locations, and NPCs to interact / fight with.

Over the long run, I aim towards making Rodina a "Daggerfall in Space".”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Rodina is currently a "full game" in the sense that it is meant to be played from start to finish, and that there are minimal bugs. You can explore the entire solar system, fight with hundreds of procedurally-generated groups of enemies, and investigate dozens of journals and books.

However, there isn't currently enough content or gameplay. That's what I'm working on right now!”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“If Rodina really improves, I may increase the price as time goes on.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The community is very important to me. In the past, customers have been given the option to vote on what I work on next. In adapting my system to use Steam, I can't guarantee that I will continue that scheme, but I will continue to listen very seriously to community input.

The thing about Rodina is that there are hundreds of possible features, and I'm excited about all of them. The community is very important in helping me figure out which direction to move in next.”

Dev Update: Health Pickups!

Updated the Dev build with more in-progress work on the Combat Update.

This time I added Health Pickups (and by extension: dynamic physics objects) for the first time! I also rebalanced combat a bit to make it harder, so each encounter will do more damage.

Next up is an important behind the scenes improvement that will optimize FPS during combat, along with powerups and maybe a new weapon! (I'm not yet sure how I'm going to handle multiple weapons - in the long run I want to add weapon choosing to the HUD but it might be too soon for that.)

But I'm REALLY excited the thing coming after that - it's a big secret!

Combat Dev Update!

Updated the Dev build with a tiny preview of some new Xeno types!

This is a rough build - no balance whatsoever on the new Xenos, and I discovered that the weapon sounds aren't working for some reason. Use this only to check some of the new work!

The Incinerator: Part of the Scavenger class, these Xenos are part of the cleanup crew - they strip everything of value and burn what they don't need. They are large and slow but will try to close distance to use their flamethrower, which can also double as a fire-ball launcher when at range.

The Poacher: Another member of the Scavenger class, the Poacher's responsibility is to strip target areas of all life and decide whether to eat it, breed it, experiment on it, or recycle it for resources. They use a weapon that tracks living things, and may eventually have an attack that slows you down.

Again, these are just rough drafts. I've got other plans in the mix - next up I hope to show you something brand new!

As always, you can access the Dev branch by going to Steam Library -> right click Rodina -> Properties -> Betas tab -> choose Dev from the dropdown. Remember to make backups of your mainline savegames so the Dev branch doesn't ruin them!

About This Game

RODINA is an immersive space exploration game which allows players to seamlessly travel across an entire, full-scale solar system. Seamless means your character can travel anywhere - in space, on planets, and in your ship - with no loading screens!

Walk around your space ship, or anywhere on full-size planet landscapes. Fly through a planet's atmosphere to its surface, or out into deep space. Destroy the alien swarm in thrilling dogfights, and learn the secrets of the demise of the Vanguard Colony Ship and the role of its mothership- Rodina.

Rodina is in continuous development! Please try the free demo before buying!

Rodina is made mostly by one solitary, sleep-deprived developer - a 10-year veteran of the games industry who previously worked at Bethesda Softworks on Oblivion and Fallout 3. You can always contact me at brendan@elliptic-games.com

Current Features:

  • Full-scale, procedural solar system
4 full-size planets, 50 randomized major asteroids, something like 45,000 minor asteroids, and one enormous star!
  • Seamless planet landings
Fly straight down to a planet surface from orbit, get out, and walk around
  • Combat with alien ships
Several different alien ship types, and 5 different weapon types, including heat-seeking missiles
  • Customizable ship interiors
Easily personalize your ship’s layout and share your design with other players
  • A Story and Background fiction
As told through books, emails, and logs

Future Vision:

Over time, I intend to work on Rodina towards the direction of "Daggerfall in Space" - a seamless procedurally-generated space RPG on a massive scale.

Frankly, this is crazy! I can't make any promises about where Rodina will go or how long it will take, but I can promise to keep working on Rodina for as long as I'm able to. I'm committed to making Rodina great, and I hope that what's already released shows that I'm capable of delivering something different, vital, and fun.

Please try the demo, and if you like what you see and pick up the full game, all your money will go towards Rodina's future development!

If it were to be released out of early access right now as a full game, I'd say it is worth the 15 bucks.

However, it is not out of early access, and the developers (2 now) are currently working their butts off to add new features. They have a plan too, and they seem to be sticking to it.

IF BRENDON OR HIS BUDDY SHOULD HAPPEN UPON THIS REVIEW (DEAR DEVS):
I'm a small-time programmer myself, and I'd like to congratulate you for creating such a stunning game. My projects are not, however, public atm.

Here are some ideas for features you should add, classified by ease

TRIVIAL:
*sit in chairs
*sleep on bed
*more tilesets and textures, more than 1 bridge tileset... etc.
*Diagonal tileset transitions
*Jetpack upgrades (More thrust power, more fuel...)
*More objects to place in interior build mode
*Automatic fire-battling systems (Upgrade)
*Flags on side of ship
*Phasers/lasers
*Adjust ceiling height
*Add/change player ship smoke trails
*LESS ANNOYING SOUND FOR THE RADIO

MEDIUM:
*Ship assembly (exterior) from pre-made parts (and import premade parts, and ships made from premade parts)
*Flags planted on planets
*Quickhull to make simple collision geometry if you don't care to make a seperate model for collision in blender
*3-d interior construction (Just do it with layers of blocks)
*Automatic interior limit recognition when importing a model
*easter eggs on planets and asteroids
*Allied xenos or humans or androids
*Holographic trophies of planets, asteroids, or space stations to put on the desks
*Awarded decor, for getting achievements or doing cool things
*Achievements
*Docking with space stations
*Player model, third person view EVA
*Plants
*Fans inside your ship for moving air. Make fan noises
*time warp of some sort, warp to dawn? Work with beds???

COMPLEX:
*Trading economy
*Player model customization
*Quests involving
***Mining
***Transport
***Real estate (Buy and sell asteroids or land on planets, kill off xenos and claim the lands they defend with capture points or something)
*MORE PLANETS
*LAN multiplayer
*Tractor beams
*food
*Minigames at friendly space stations (Simple stuff)

REALLY COMPLEX (but really cool)
*Terraforming (take the naturally generated terrain, then apply changes)
*play with physics objects inside your ship, watch things float in 0 g
*Aerodynamics

Rodina is an amazing explorationg game set in space. You must prepare tthe Zorica so that the Rodina can arrive, with the human race aboard. You can aid them, or fight them.

Pros:

Music is INCREDIBLE
Story is extremely well written
Art style suits it
It has a free demo (don't see that alot)
Flying the Ship has an amazingly good feel to it. I reccomend you use a controller.
Full ship customization.
Havn't seen many bugs

Cons:

It early access, and doesn't have that much to do in it. All you really do is collect more story or fight.
At first the story can be overwhelming

Rodina is an amazing concept that I hope will grow to be an even better game.
But what Rodina is amazing at is capturing the scale of everything, it makes you feel like the solar system is a real one.

8/10

Things that you CAN'T do in Rodina that you CAN do in most space games:

- Stay only in the pilot seat while flying your ship.
- Never see the inside of your ship.
- Not fully customize the inside of your ship.
- Teleport anywhere in space as an excuse for lightspeed and a loading screen.
- Not actually travel at the speed of light.
- See a beautiful planet from orbit but never get close enough to land.
- Unrealistically destroy asteroids with ease.
- Unrealistically enter a planet's atmosphere with ease.
- Experience the same gravity everywhere.
- Experience air resistance in the vacuum of space.
- Play for 3 hours and get bored.
- Hate yourself for wasting your money.
- Keep yourself from singing along to the music.
- Have no emotional impact from any part of the story.
- Disassociate yourself from the immersion of the game and come to a sense of reality at any time.

In just 45 mins of gameplay, I really like how the games mechanics work. Multiplayer/co-op version of this game would be awesome. I hope building and crafting grows in this game. Small file foot-print and very fast loading. Cool game. Very worth a buy.

This game is amazing. The story is on point and everything. The game is almost like interactive art, its looks are a big part of the game. I would definitely recommend this game. Although I wish there were more ending, as the one makes me feel kinda powerless to save Rodina, its still a great game.

This was an amazing game to play! I enjoyed every bit of the story, was suprised by the plot twist mid-game, and even felt the wind from the feels-train at the end. Can't wait to see what Rodina will look after it leaves early acess! (also the first time I flew the ship I went mach speed right into the ground! xD )

There are pretty games.

Then there are really pretty games.

Then there is rodina.

*ahem* Allow me to correct myself.

Then there is mother♥♥♥♥ing Rodina.[b/]

over my 22 hours on this game, I experienced something... atmospheric. it's something of a throwaway term in most games, but in rodina, I found something that made my hair stand on end and my spine tingle at the sublime, raw scale, feeling which I can only describe as atmospheric.[b/]

---POETRY MODE DISABLED---

Rodina is genuinely one of the most interesting concepts to come out of the shitpile that can be early access in recent years- a game that, even though the game contains less content than some walking simulators, it still managed to hold my attention for long periods of time. mostly this was the subtly told and well thought out backstory that kept me really interested and hunting for more, mostly revealed through a series of logs, books and decrypted conversations. but the sheer size and grandeur of this seemingly extremely humble game is really something to behold- if it can retain that, while also becoming a legitimate finished game, it will be one of the best science fiction games I've played all now.

I paid 10 pounds for this. honestly, even for the current product, I'd pay 15.

It's just that pretty.[i/]

I cannot recommend this game at this time. There's just too little content and one "sleep deprived, 10 year veteran" as the sole developer does not bode well for a complete game in the next 5 years.

Has the scale that No Man's Sky wishes it has in terms of planet size, but seems a little empty and incomplete at the moment. If you're looking for an interesting space experience in a single solar system, then I definitely think you should pick it up especially for its price. However if your looking for a grand adventure with more substance, I suggest waiting for this game to be finished.
