About This Game

Max Payne is a man with nothing to lose in the violent, cold urban night. A fugitive undercover cop framed for murder, hunted by cops and the mob, Max is a man with his back against the wall, fighting a battle he cannot hope to win. To all those f♥cking idiots that refuse to use Google:

* To make your game start set compatibility mode with Windows 95
* To make your sounds work like intended get sound fix, there is a dedicated thread for it on Steam Forums
* To jump on the train car at the very end of part VI of chapter I, either use shootdodge or don't jump at all but just run and do nothing else, Max will get on the train car anyway
* To fix the cutscene with escaping Gognitti in the middle of part VII of the same chapter, walk into the first staircase and backtrack, cutscene will play as intended

Ugh. Recommended only because I don't wanna get attention of all those real gamers that would want to r♥pe my mother and slit my throat for saying otherwise. I mean it's a great game, one of those oldies that aren't getting really old, but… For f♥ck sake, I just can't stand repeating one part of the level for hour or so only because you'd have to either stand in the middle of the room filled with enemies or have over 9000 grenades, and it's just not for my nerves. I remember playing much younger Stranglehold which had pretty similar gameplay (although a bit easier) and I had tons of fun there, I wish I could get to it again, but somehow it refuses to cooperate with my Radeon.

I would recommend this game to anyone who likes Alan Wake (and don't mind playing older games). You will recognize similarities in sound, movement and weapons.

If you haven't played Alan Wake, and you like older games, I would still recommend it because it has a great story and is action-packed with bullet time! ー═┻┳︻▄ξ( ^‿^)ξ▄︻┻┳═一

I haven't played this game for that long but I would still highly recommend it. I got it on sale with Max Payne 2 for super cheap and I LOVED Max Payne 3. If it goes on sale, definitely pick it up. Hell, even if it doesn't go on sale, buy it.

Amazing game! Every 90's kid who had access to a computer growing up more than likely played Max Payne, or pined for the game because it turned you, the player, into Neo from the Matrix (this game came out around the same time the Matrix trilogy was being released in theaters, so for all of us young teenagers and gamers at the time, Max Payne was the ♥♥♥♥ :D).

** GETTING THE GAME TO WORK **
There are guides for running bat files, etc.
However, I found a simpler solution that worked for me (eliminates the need to manually run a bat file from the root directory or a shortcut everytime--my way allows me to launch from library).

I don't know if it's a universal fix, so if this doesn't work for you, then I apologize -- just google guides for 'Max Payne Windows 10 fix'; you will get a resolution if mine won't help.

Here's how I got it to run on Windows 10:

1. ------> go to ../steamapps/common/Max Payne/
----> find "maxpayne.exe"
---> right click on "maxpayne.exe"
--> click on "compatibility" pane (no pun intended ;])
-> look for the area that says "compatibility mode"
> Enable 'Run this program in compatibility mode for:' and set the option to either Windows 95 or Windows 98 in the drop down menu (find which one works for you).

2. ----> Go to: https://thirteenag.github.io/wfp#sec2
---> Select "Download" from the first widget box. This is for Max Payne 1. The second widget box is for MP2.
--> Follow the instructions from the website and extract the contents of the zip into the root Max Payne dir.
-> Launch the launcher -- the zip file we extracted in the previous step contains the Direct X 8 library necessary to play the game and scale the graphics to newer aspect ratios.
> Put in your 16:9 or 16:10 settings, upgrade the graphics options, etc. and press play!

3.-> Whenever you see a cutscene in game, or one of those comic-esque interludes pops up, press the "E" key. It will start the cutscene over but play it with sound this time.
> If this doesn't work, just google the sound fix.

Released in 2001, developed by Remedy Entertainment, Max Payne is a gritty, film noir crime thriller set in a darker version of new york, featuring an innovative combat system previously only used in films, bullet time.

Max as a character is a likeable yet dark hero. The death of his family spirals him downwards into the underbelly of the criminal world, and entangles him in a web of crime activity that goes far beyond that of simple thugs and crooks.

Taking direct inspiration from comics and pop culture, as well as many references to norse mythos and cults, the game really has a unique feel of it's own that few have come close to.

I played this first when I was 16, genuinely ecstatic that I owned a PC that could run it, and was sucked in to it's premise and combat system. Despite it's obvious ageing, you really felt like an anti-hero in a rich story.

Arguably the best in the Payne series excluding it's technical limitations, I will always circle back to this game in times of new release drought. What could be better that mowing down thugs in bullet time.

Classic milestone in gaming.

Lets hope they remaster it, so the textures get on par with everything else.

Decided to play a little Max Payne just to remember the awesome gameplay. With the quality gameplay and interesting story, I "accidentally" played the whole thing from start until the end in one go. In my opinion this is still the best third-person-shooter out there. It's just as tremendously fun and satisfying to play today as it was when it first came out. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=772728218 http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=769714746

Max Payne is one of those great games that needed to be made. Either so Remedy could go on to make Alan Wake, or quantum break or just because the genre is lacking in quality. It's aged well, and at the same time been left behind by the constantly evolveing and ever tweaked control schemes of shooters whether third person or otherwise. Worth playing but for best experience you'll want to use keyboard and mouse. I recommend playing this before any other remedy titles not because you need to but because you should. just like playing omikron: The Nomad Soul before Indigo Prophecy, it gives you the oportunity to appreciate how far the developer come. When you've moved on to their more recent titles you'll be even more impressed than you would have without haveing played max payne, and in tern be more curious about future projects. I think its always better to be familiar with the developer because in some copacity you will know what your paying for or at least know what to expect with future IP's.

for the time it came out I'd give it a 10/10 graphically on par with GTA 3 if not slightly more polished

To begin I've got Win 10 and the game didn't launch until I went to the task manager and, in the "details" tab, I selected the "steam" process. Do right click and select "choose affinity". Next set only "CORE 0" and the game will run perfectly. Maybe you can suffer some sound glitches on cutscenes but there are many fixes working for that issue.
The game is really good in ambientation, story and gameplay.

Best film noir video game i have ever played ! Even after 16 years this game always leaves me with a sense of fear for some reason ! I also believe that this game desperately needs to be updated a little bit so it can run smoother on newer systems , i had to download something extra to get this to run and sound as the game wasn't launching and when it did i didn't get any sound ! Dont Buy this at this state unless you have no problem downloading third party software to play it ! Consider bringing this to Mac and Linux at some point !

Woah, this game was amazing! The final Part (aka Act) was incredible and it got into some really deep ♥♥♥♥ involving secret societies. So while this game overall looks a little block-y, especially the character models, I think it looks great for a 2001 game. However, some missions are a pain, requiring multiple quick-saves and a lot of trial and error attempts. Some missions were atrocious, which I won't spoil. However most missions are good, but the gameplay is a bit, let's say, not up to today's standards. You don't even feel as if you are shooting the guys sometimes. There is a TWEENY TINY bit of platforming, and little to say, it was awful. However the story and soundtrack and gameplay all blended in well, and especially the story, was amazing. I cannot believe how amazing my final, maybe, 4 hours with the game were. This is a masterpiece! I cannot wait to start Max Payne 2 now. And from my point of view, this game is SO different to Max Payne 3!

Illuminarty. Yes, they are in the game.
