What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Wayward is still a beta product. During this phase, many things still need to be improved, expanded upon and tweaked. There's tons of content and ideas yet left to explore. Early Access for Wayward means giving the players an early look into Wayward and providing a vessel for those players to help us shape the future of Wayward.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Wayward will be in beta, or "Early Access" indefinitely, until, we as the developers, and you as the players feel like this is a polished, fully featured release, suitable for a non-beta status. There's no set time frame for this; however, even after the eventual release, there's no plans on stopping development for Wayward. We have been developing Wayward for years now and will continue to do so.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The game will not differ in large ways from the last Early Access version to the full release version. You will continue to see improvements in every aspect of the game through our iterative design and development process during Early Access, all the way up until we feel like it is ready to ship as a fully, finalized gaming experience.

We are transparent about our goals, ideas and planned changes. We will routinely post updates to discuss with the community.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Wayward is a content-rich experience, even in its early state. It's a fully playable game filled with many hours of gameplay. As a disclaimer, we would generally state that Wayward is Early Access and is a beta product. You may experience bugs, unpolished system/mechanics and unbalanced gameplay. Early Access will allow Wayward to refine and fix these issues as we become aware of them.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“At this point, we are unsure if the non-Early Access release will increase in price, but we are not ruling it out. As we provide a better game, more content, and more features, a price change may be warranted. The price increase, if in fact it does happen, will most likely be a small increase to signify a jump from our beta game to a near-finalized product, and as a reward to all the early customers.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Ever since the early alpha versions of Wayward, the community and player feedback has shaped Wayward into the game it is today. This will not change at all going forward on Steam with the project.”

Wayward Newsletter #2

Beta 2.1

Beta 2.1 started out a bit rough, but through a series of patches, we ironed out most of the issues with the latest installment, beta 2.1.3. Thanks to all those who contributed issues and feedback. We definitely don't mean to have a public quality assurance period; however, it's just the nature of building games with lots of depth with a small development team. We really look towards the community for feedback and we are pretty proud of our track record of implementing things the community wants. You'll see a large focus on that in the upcoming beta 2.2.

Depth is not something we want to sacrifice with Wayward going forward. The game will definitely get more and more content and become more complex as time goes on throughout this heavy development phase while in Early Access.

Upcoming Beta 2.2

If you follow the development of Wayward, you will know we are currently hard at work on 2.2. We have two words for you: CREATURE TAMING!

A highly requested feature, taming will be implemented in beta 2.2 along with a giant list of improvements, bug fixes and more content! We won't spoil too much, but if you are interested in all the great stuff we have put in so far, check out the "2.2 Done" column in Trello:

Buried in the obscurity of the older Steam interface, there actually exists an official Wayward Steam group:

Beta 2.1.3 Released

Today we have a quite substantial patch ready for ya'll. We wanted to do one sooner, but we thought we would release something a bit more significant potentially as the last patch in the 2.1.x series. Time to work on some bigger things once again!

There's a few bugs and improvements that have been sitting on our todo for quite some time, many of which we hope will help ease some new players into the game.

Thanks to all that made your voice heard and helped us out on balancing and finding/reporting any remaining bugs.

Bugs
  • Fixed an issue where items that decayed/changed into other items (fruit to seeds, or raw meat to rotten meat) did not shift in weight.
  • Fixed items that once had decay no longer are sorted with that decay still set (with sort by decay).
  • Fixed an "undefined" message when getting a status effect from a doodad.
  • Fixed an error that occurred when trying to repair wooden doors.
  • Fixed a bug that made aberrant monsters scared. Aberrant monsters should never be scared unless they are low health.
  • Fixed the build version not outputting in console for Mac OS X.
  • Fixed an issue where desert templates could spawn in to too close to sea water.
  • Fixed a bug that would stop a highlight (from Starter Quest/hints) prematurely if more than one called.
  • Fixed an issue where the daily challenge hint was not showing up when going to Daily Challenge.
  • Fixed an issue where scrollbars could shift item positions on certain sizes of inventory/containers/equipment/crafting windows.
  • Fixed an issue where skill in parrying would actually increase burn damage instead of reduce it.
  • Fixed a bug where you could open a context menu while the game was loading.
  • Fixed a bug where you would not earn the gatherer milestone unless you were using an ineffective tool for gathering.
Balance
  • Monsters have a slightly higher chance to lose interest.
  • Reduced weight of limestone, talc, sharp rocks and knifes slightly.
  • Abandoned house templates now have a higher chance to have missing walls/floors/etc.
  • Reduced max damage and increased max health of claw worms.
  • Doubled raft durability.
  • Re-balanced stoke fire values to make more sense with dismantling (all items equal up to their base items).
  • Slight malignity skill tweaks. Decreased malignity slightly for anatomy, parrying, tinkering and woodworking. Increased malignity on tactics, and very slightly on mining and lumberjacking.
Improvement
  • Wooden poles can now be used to stoke fire.
  • Corrected how single walls would show up as a single vertical columns instead of horizontal walls.
  • Starter Quests now have a back button for going back a quest and skip button if you have already done the quest (saved across all saves).
  • Increased the opacity of non-craftable items. They are now slightly grayed out as well.
  • The corpse carving hint will no longer show for blood.
  • When the Steam overlay is off, mods/link navigation is now done using your default browser instead of the internal one.
  • Improved default dialog positions and sizes.
  • Collecting doodads will now log what you have received in your inventory if returning more than one item.
  • Tweaked the sandstone pond template to make more geological sense. Fresh water is now contained inside.
  • The monument and raft templates now no longer have a chance to be degraded (missing tiles).
  • Improved color accuracy on many particles.
  • Renamed "Collect Object" to "Collect Object With Hands" for less confusion.
  • Tweaked some inspection text to mention the new world tool-tips in hints.
  • Fixed some tiepoz and tweaked a few lines in Starter Quest.
  • You will now always spawn with a wooden pole (to unlock necessary starter crafts and information).
  • Tweaked wording on wooden poles to mention coming from branches/logs.
New
  • All doodads have unique particle colors and will show on gather/trample.

Don't let the primary colors and cuddly appearance lull you into a sense of security! This game is unforgiving.
In my opinion, this is just about the best wilderness survival roguelike out now.

Absolutely amazing game! What a gem, do not let the graphics fool you, the gameplay is so well thought out that this game is timeless. I hope you make money on it because the effort that has gone into making things just right is incredible. I would have paid twice the price happily when I realised that the dev was very active and also interactive with the playerbase.

Wayward is a rich, roguelike survival game, yet is still simple enough for casual players and those new to the roguelike genre. The Steam version is far more polished than the free online version, but if you are at all hesitant about purchasing this, I suggest trying it out on the developers' website. So far I only have a few hours on record, but I played a ton of it online. The developers also seem to be fairly responsive and frequent in their updates. Overall, it's worth a try if you enjoy roguelikes, crafting, and survival games.

This game made me punch my monitor, but then I bought a new one so I could keep playing.

This top-down, wilderness survival will have you hooked in an hour! You'll spend hours on one save and have it taken away in the blink of an eye by a Pirate Ghost. There is a vast world to explore that will bring you hours of headaches trying to navigate. The never ending battle to find clean drinking water might turn you away, but if your persistent you'll uncover new islands and their mysteries.

10/10 would buy this for my enemies.

I love this game. In fact I was actively watching the countdown to steam release at work just waiting to get home and get it. was playing 1.9.2 beta at work when it was slow once. My superviser saw it and decided to give it a whirl. he spawned next to a fire elemental and almost instantly died. I coulden't stop laughing.

I have played this game on and off since a few years back and I can say that it is not for everybody, but for anyone that this game does suit, it suits like a custom tailored Hugo Boss. Creative, exciting and tactical, it is everything you want from a refreshingly unique roguelike/survival game... except maybe a little easy. you might not agree if you haven't played it before but the game is all about progressive knowledge and discovery, so once you know what you need to do to survive its fairly easy to do so if you take things slow and think ahead. It has great potential and I would love to see some event like situations and more diversity in the future!

10/10 would repair glass bottle with stone hammer again

Thank you to the developer for kindly providing a review key.

Note: as of 4/23/16, great majority of my time was spent with the older free online version (still available if you want to try it btw), although the review considers both.

In the endless sea of clones in the roguelike/lite survival/crafting genre, Wayward is a sight for sore eyes. This title has been in active developement for some time now, and it definately shows. First-and-foremost, what is most notable about Wayward that sets it apart from other similiar titles is that it is turn-based.

Essentially, you are stranded on an island and must survive. Sound familiar? Sure. While Wayward seems to share similiar characteristics with other clones - it is truly exceptional. What really makes this title stand out is an excellent user-interface, a truly deep crafting system, and steep-yet-fair difficulty which combine to create a really addicting experience. While I have played countless survival/crafting clones over the years, nothing has given me that thrilling experience of trying to survive and learn mechanics similiar to my first time playing Don't Starve. With that being said, this isn't Don't Starve - it has a personality all of its own. I would highly recommend trying the free version - get past the moderate learning curve and then the addiction begins :)

Pros:
+Everything is fairly logical. With each death you will have an 'aha' moment, where you will almost immediately know how to correct your actions on your next run. This really makes an addicting experience.
+The user interface is really easy to use and makes a complex system fairly intuitive.
+Tons of items and crafting recipes that make sense.
+Tutorial is a warm welcome from the web version.
+Graphics are well done and fitting.
+The moderate-to-steep difficulty is great, and keeps you coming back for more.
+Super cheap asking price for the quality hours you can get out.

Cons:
-Sometimes I get stuck with trying to figure out a simple crafting recipe. Perhaps a recipe list has been added in-game since the Steam launch, but I haven't found it yet. I usually just alt+tab to the Wiki, but this can be tedious at times. Once you learn the recipes, this is not a big deal.
-Just be aware this is a much slower paced game than others in this genre. Not necessarily a 'con' per se, but be aware.
-Sometimes movement can feel janky - ie. accidentally walking into a fire pit or bumping into trees and gathering stuff you don't want to.

If you like survival/crafting games, and enjoy turn-based play, this is a no-brainer. This stands far ahead of the others. I totally recommend this game.

I have played this game since their initial release on their site, I would say I have at least 100 hours logged into it. It is by far one of the best rogue-likes I have played.

Pros:
- Fun
- Time consuming, but you can leave at any second since it is turn based.
- Long in development, Free before release 2.0
- Modding support
- No lag
- Logical
- Beautiful pixel art graphics
- Super nice devs, does twitch streams
- Time and effort put into every single aspect
- Completely open development, you can see their progress on trello (I was following the steam 2.0 release on there)
- Low priced.

Cons:
- You may smash your computer when you die, but you will likely buy another computer to play it again.

Note: this review is a "no" because Steam doesn't have a "neutral" review

This is a nice game, seems to offer a lot of depth on gameplay, the crafting system uses item "categories" for the recipes (eg: the "string" recipe requires 2 "cordage" items, so you might use two "spider silk" or one "spider silk" with one "seaweed" etc). it reminds me of the abandonware "Schiffbruch", another castaway game.

Pros:
- Good crafting system
- Proceduraly generated maps
- Replayability
- Novelty (ie: mixing rogue-like with turn-based tactics and survival. With a plus of not being another zombie survival game)
- Modable

Cons:
- Awful UI - Hotkeys (You can put itens on hotkeys, this is nice but the hotkey use will only apply the first "option" of the "actions" menu of that item. Ie: an axe has the options "Carve" and "Gather"; if you assign the axe to the hotkey 1, when you press 1 it will try to "Carve" with the axe, even if the target is not carveable)
- Micromanagement (All the time you will need to have your inventory open. Do you want to mine rocks ? Change your equiped itens on hand for a pickaxe; Do you want to cut down a tree ? Change your equiped items to an axe, is an enemy incoming? Change your equiped itens. )
- Awful UI - Itens action menu (The way the action menu is set on the itens, you are prone to missclick and do bad things. Ie: The "Glass Bottle with Seawater" actions are "1 - Drink", "2 - Pour"; you would not want to drink the saltwater for various reasons but pour it's water on a still to clean it. But unfortunately the option 1 apears right in front of the item as soon as you click, so chances are you will drink it)
- Almost no help (The only help you have is a simple tutorial quest to get you to make a campfire and water still, and a set of hint messages. Itens also have a standard description related to their main use, but many times it is not clear their function at all, nor does the game tells you that the purple number at the top of your interface increases as you skill up and get milestones and it affects the spawn rate)

Overall, it is a good game if you don't care that much to graphics nor to it's dificulty curve. If you don't like micromanagement and prefer action focused games, run away from it.

The survival element is very thick and comprehensive. The perma-death gives the game a feeling of gravity and consequence.

The only flaw I have seen is when you get a skill near 90% an enemy will come and kill you within 200 moves. That's kind of sloppy and heavy-handed game balancing, but otherwise this is more than worth the pricetag.

Really fun! I didn't really think I would enjoy it.

Pros
-Love the art style
-Generated terrain, each start is different
-Lots of crafting
-Gives a challenge
-Cool leveling system(more like stats)
-Exploring / Adventure
-UI is easy to get used to compared to other games.

Cons
-Very hard to start, really difficult making shelter, but after that its smooth sailing (not really a con)

I would really recommend giving it a try if you like survival rougelikes!

Very unintuitive. UI is clunky, items break to fast, you can't carry enough stuff, you need a ton of similar but not really items to craftm you never seem to progress (I played it for almost five hours and I still feel stuck) and most of all, it's just not fun.

tl;dr: It used to be a browser game.

Pretty easy to reccomend this one. If you're unsure, play the older, free version online for a while. Die a few times, maybe find your first treasures, etc. If you like what you play there, this is pretty much that game but better.

I was stubborn for a while since the game had been free before, but there are enough extra features and overall improvements to be worth paying for.

This game is absolutely AMAZING! the crafting, gathering, and exploring are fantastic. And i love the menu that comes up when you hover over things. They are so detailed. and when you hover over a crafting recipe, the items required that you have in your inventory will be highlighted. So you can easily see what you have/need.

I have 80 hours logged into this game and i'm about to jump right back into it after this review. (first review btw, its that good)

Once you get the hang of the actions and mechanics of the game, you will get yourself lost in the gameplay!

I say Buy It. Its great!

I played this game back when it was still in beta as a browser game and boy has it improved. As an already great game back then, it acquired massive updates as it was moved to Steam and is definitely worth the money. The team behind the game are great, respectable and kind people, and the game receives pretty regular updates. There are few bugs that are rarely encountered and the game continues to open up many new in-game oppurtunities and ways to play as it's developed. It can only get better as time goes on!

I love this game! I used to play it WAYYYYYYYYYYYY before it came out on Steam. I even emailed the creator a bit with info back and forth. It's getting even better. I think I read it's also going to get a facelift soon? It is badass... ! Just need more endgame content, that's all though.
