Old arcade style game.
Fun, decent upgrade system, but finicky. Bullet hell is rough, you can easily purchase the wrong stuff for your ship and get locked into a bad decision and have to start over from scratch in this game.

Jets'n'Guns is a Shoot Em Up, also called a 2D sidescrolling space shooter. I have spent at least 200 hours playing this game by myself/ when I was younger and I instantly bought this game on steam.

There's an insane number of weapons to buy, you can level them up, you can purchase upgrades for your ship, pick a combination of weapons you like depending on your playstyle. There's also a good selection of bombs and missiles.

The music is amazing ( 30+ soundtracks from Machinae Supremacy, an amazing Sid Metal band, ) the replayability is good, they added achievements, trading cards, some tweaks and it works on 1920x1080 resolution. I recommend buying this game in a heartbeat if you liked any kind of space shooters because it's always been my favorite one and you will definately like it.

After playing for an hour or so, I can tell it's just as good as I remember it, but, I also used to play on easy and I just tried hard, way too hard for me, normal offers me a fair challenge and the game is very enjoyable. :)

Ahh, the best damn side-scroller shump I've ever played.

Tons of levels, tons of weapons, awesome soundtrack and just plain fun! Almost every level you beat will unlock another gun, missile or bomb to try out! All the weapons can be upgraded to do more damage, have a larger spread and just look more awesome! There are space missions, missions where bombs are a must to clear out land enemies, missions where you fly in a jetpack with 2 giant guns strapped to it... lol

There are secret ships, levels and weapons to find too!

A lot of the ships have different powerups they can get and weapon slots... for example one ship might have 3 forward weapon slots and a bomb slot whereas another ship might have 2 forward slots, one rear slot and missile AND bomb slot. All ships have different hull integrity, heat sink and agility so that further sets them a part! Gotta choose the right ship for the mission!

Man, its freakin awesome so don't let the older graphics turn you away! Its a glorious high-action explosive game!

One my favourite highly customizable shmups from several years ago on Steam? YES PLEASE! Time has not aged this beast too badly at all. It still looks good, throws out the challenge, and the soundtrack is as kicking as ever thanks to Machinae Supremacy bringing some hard-♥♥♥ rock-metal into the mix.

I originally played Jets'n'Guns years ago, and had an absolute blast. However I never actually paid for the game.

Finally, years later it is released on Steam and it's just as awesome as when it originally came out.

Jets 'n' Guns is a fantastic space side scrolling shooter, with heaps of equipment to buy and loads of upgrades. The soundtrack is absolutely fantastic and very fitting.

My favorite part about J'n'G is being able to try countless configurations on the ships to see which combination will help me finally finish my current level. When you buy an item you can always sell it back for the buying value, so you are never restricted to what combinations you want to attempt.

This is an intense retro shooter with a crazy amount of replayability, don't miss this one out!

YEEEEESSSSSSSSSS! One of the best shmups of all time is now on Steam? YES. The one where you can customize and upgrade your ship? YES. What, it's only $7.00, and it's on sale for $3.50? YES. It has cards too? YES. Instant buy.

Seriously, if you've never played Jets'n'Guns yet, do yourself a favor and buy it. It's loads of fun, cheap, and challenging to boot. I've actually dumped many hours into this game dispite my recorded playing time on Steam. I plan to spend many more now that it's here.

So much fun, a challenging game with a huge arsenal to choose from at your own will, amusing humour and an amazing soundtrack by Machinae Supremacy (that's included as separate files for free!) for just a few bucks? This is a robbery. For the developers.

It's not just a good sidescrolling shooter. This game does its job, with a blast.
Don't get fooled by the cheesy looking graphics, as the game was released for quite some time before it even reached Steam. They get the job done and JnG looks pleasant enough for an old 2d shooter.

Who's this game for?

Anyone who loves horizontal shmups, and wants them to be long, packed with upgrades, and challenging yet not quite bullet hell.

Who is this game NOT for?
Anyone looking for a true bullet hell, one hit kill, almost impossible to beat experience. Anyone not in the mood for a good challenge. Anyone who prefers a very serious (e.g. military, mission based) tone rather than one that can be extremely tongue in cheek and humorous. Anyone bothered by camp and goofy inuendos.

PROS:

  • Extremely long by shmup standards
  • TONS of upgrades by shmup standards, as well as multiple ships.
  • Automatic New Game Plus
  • Intricate art style
  • Comedic, campy tone
  • Extremely challenging at first, but giving way to mastery and then sheer, nigh invulnerability granting, ridiculous super weapons after a few playthroughs of acquiring money and unlockables.
  • Selling items and weapons gives you the amount you paid back in full. (More games should do this. Seriously.)
  • Feels ripped out of the 90s.
  • AMAZING music.
  • Controller support (X360 was used in my case - cannot speak for others.)

CONS:
  • Some radical difficulty spikes, and lulls.
  • Difficult to see until you become used to it. (Projectiles can be extremely small, and there's not always precise or audible feedback when you get hit.)
  • One particular stage - the "race" (a highspeed checkpoint obstacle course) - can be maddening on higher difficulties/speeds, and feels out of place with the rest of the game.
  • Other shmups, as much as I love them, may feel much less meaty in comparison after having played this. ;)

Detailed review

I love shmups. But my favorite variety of them - while I can definitely enjoy bullet hells as well as more casual shmups when in the right mood - has always been the R-Types and, in particular, the Gradiuses (Gradii? - Anyway... Gradius!) of the world. Somewhat lengthy, lots of upgrades and customization, and at least the illusion of choice and playstyle.

Jets'n'Guns is a brilliant example of that style of game... and it goes far beyond what most entries in the above mentioned series do (with the possible exception of R-Type Final) by being both extremely long as shmups go (30+ levels, none of them very brief in and of themselves,) and jam packed with weapons (70!)

The game starts out fairly challenging with your initial armaments, and only gets worse from there (at least until you become wealthy enough to unlock the best weapons.) If you aren't careful, it's extremely possible to "screw yourself" by not making enough money for good upgrades. Which forced me to restart the game at least once. But once you've got the hang of things, your eyes adjust to the at times difficult to see enemy projectiles, and you start racking up some respectable weapons (and leveling them up, which also costs money,) you begin to surge your way forward.

Even still, on your first playthrough - even on the lowest difficulty "too fat to die" (which I recommend starting on, if only so when the game restarts on the next higher challenge level - whcih is how New Game Plus works here - you'll already have all your money and gadgets from the previous run) - certain levels and bosses prove a very steep uphill climb. And, it must be said, certain levels do abruptly spike in difficulty, or seem too easy compared to what came before them. Expect to die a lot as you experiment with what weapons work best for each situation, and memorize what you're up against. Old school style trial and error. (Except with checkpoints, so, not quite.)

Speaking of trial and error, one of the most welcome and refreshing things this game does, is GIVE YOU BACK YOUR FULL PURCHASE PRICE WHEN SELLING WEAPONS AND UPGRADES! This is such a brilliant touch that no one ever thinks of, because we're all so indoctrinated to accept the penalty of re-selling equipment in games. But it makes perfect sense here, because the challenge comes from using the right tool and the right strategy for the job, rather than going broke and being trapped.

The promise that if you can just make it through the next stage, you might come out the other side of it with enough money for that next big upgrade you've been eyeing, is what kept me playing even when the challenge seemed almost hair pullingly unfair. (Which, of course, it never was. I simply hadn't done well enough early on to afford the weapons that would make things easier on me.)

I'm on my third playthrough at the time of this review, with nearly 30 hours played (see the top of this review for where it stands at the time you read this.) The game is MORE than worth the asking price, and not only is it a good deal for what it is, but it's also one of the most enjoyable shmups I've EVER played, because it scratches the "massive number of upgrades" itch more effectively than just about any other game out there. Add to that its whimsical art style and attitude that make Jets'n'Guns feel like it fell through a time warp from the era of Oddworld, Toejam and Earl, and Gex, and you've got a really refreshing shmup on your hands.

Oh, and the music is epic. Seriously, if you find anything writen above appealing... buy this game. I was so pleasantly surprised, I can scarcely believe the game is real, to be honest.

10/10 Would get deployed from a giant phallic spaceship called Impotence and fight borg cubes full of beer bottles again. And again, and again, because I'm stuck in a time loop. (You'll find out...)

Great Game. The first 3-4 levels are a bit on the tough side, so you will need to be very carefull what you spend your $ on. After that around level 20 ish it gets pretty easy and the last 10 levels are boringly easy. total of 40 ish rounds. After you finish it, the game re-sets & you start over with all your stuff on a higher difficulty. I love the BGM, The writing is a bit on the childish side but I would have laughed at everything if I was younger. 2 thumbs up for the amount of content and price.
