What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We want to bring this room scale VR experience to the general public as soon as possible, since we believe this game has the ability to transform VR non-believers into believers. This is a "pick up and play" experience that does not need a manual, with deeply refined core gameplay. We'll be adding lots of features in the upcoming months, and we believe that our community can provide valuable feedback during the production process.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“About 6 to 12 months.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We'll be improving the overall graphics, adding boss fights, more environments, gun types, space pirate goodies, enemies and strategies. We'll add achievements and other social features, and last but not least we're investigating a possibility for co-op play; Space Pirates, back to back against an army of droids.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The early access version already has the solid base of the Space Pirate Trainer full game, with a selection of guns and enemies. Blast your way through endless waves of droids and dance your way into the online (or local) leaderboard.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price will likely go up through development, depending on the amount of content and features we will be implementing.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We are definitely listening to the community for this one. Suggestions will be discussed with our team and may be integrated into one of the frequent release cycles.
We'll update the community with videos about new features every few weeks.”

Space Pirate Trainer Beta Update

Space Pirate Trainer beta is out now, featuring new gameplay, graphics, weapons, powerups, and the revered Volton.

The Volton is a melee weapon that redirects pulse lasers back to their origin, and also includes a plasma-link that can pull droids towards you or smash them into the environment. It takes some practice to master, though once you do.. it opens up a lot of possibilities!

Other new weapons include the Ion Grenade Launcher and Shotworks - both incredibly powerful additions to a Space Pirate arsenal. Use the trigger to fire a grenade from the Ion Grenade Launcher, and hit the trigger again to detonate. You can take out a whole swarm of droids with just one perfectly placed hit. The Shotworks sends out a spray of plasma, perfect for taking out a close range enemy or deflecting a group of medium range droids.

After a successful droid takedown, one of five PowerUps may appear. Once activated PowerUps will greatly enhance your abilities for ten seconds. PowerUps include a shield, machine guns, homing bullets, a gravity field, and missiles.

Alongside the global Space Pirate Captain leaderboard are leaderboards for each weapon, so you’ll be able to dance your way up the charts dedicated to your favourite method of playing.

There are *lots* more updates in this release, so read on below for a list of some of the ones we remembered to write down these past few months!

We'd like to thank all the supporters here on the forums, Twitter and Reddit that have helped make this beta possible, your contributions have been invaluable! We've really enjoyed going through your feedback and are pretty certain you're going to absolutely love this update.

Thanks for your support!
I-Illusions

Space Pirate Trainer Beta Change-list

New weapons
  • Shotworks: Your very own space pirate shotgun. Really great for close range destruction, also pretty great for medium range scattered shots
  • Ion Grenade Launcher: This is a whole bunch of 4th of July’s rolled into one gun. Shoot once to send out a grenade, and again to detonate
  • The Volton: Brand new second option for the shield, turns into a laser-deflective bat that doubles as a plasma link! Try aiming the blue laser at a droid, pulling the trigger and lassoing that droid around like a space cowboy! All lasers deflected with the plasma-link will be redirected back to the location they were fired from

New enemies
  • Scout droid: fires a whole bunch of quick bursts, and then zaps as far away as it can
  • Heavy: The Beta “big gun” - this droid fires *five* lasers simultaneously to ensure anything and everything is obliterated. The blue laser is harder to dodge because of its higher velocity
PowerUps
After every droid is destroyed there is a chance a PowerUp cubes will spawn, up to a limit of three PowerUps at any one time. When activated (by shooting, hitting them with your head or with your shield) a PowerUp will last for ten seconds.

PowerUps include:
  • Machine gun (green): Quick machine gun fire if you’ve got your guns out
  • Shield (blue): A temporary bubble surrounds you and no droid fire can break through. Perfect for those tender space pirate times
  • Homing bullets (yellow): Need some help aiming? These guys will do the dirty work for you. Hit the yellow PowerUp and then push the trigger - bullets will find their own way to a droid!
  • A Little Help From My Ship (red): If you see a red PowerUp, wait til there are plenty of droids, and then activate the upgrade. The skies will rain with missiles!
  • Gravity field (purple): A purple wormhole will open in a random location in the playfield, sucking in any object (droid or otherwise) passing through the local area

Gameplay updates
  • Hardcore mode: Real space pirates do *not* have time for bullet time
  • Guns were slightly rebalanced
  • Wave selection: Start classic or hardcore mode from wave 1, 5, 10 or 15
  • Shield swapping (putting arm behind shoulder) more reliable than ever. You probably won’t need the grip button anymore
  • Super slow down when hit by a droid, making it easier to dodge subsequent hits
  • Bullet time now degrades as you progress. Super high at wave 2, super super low at wave 30
  • Controllers vibrate when swapping between shield and gun
  • VRSense: Screen subtly flashes when a droid shoots outside of your peripheral vision, perfect for that pesky droid just to your left!
  • Game stats presented at end of game (waves survived, droids destroyed, longest combo, eyeshots, shots survived, dominant weapon - weapon used for > 90% of shots
  • Gun-specific leaderboards: Your dominant weapon (the one used for more than 90% of shots) will indicate which leaderboard your score gets sent to. All dominant weapons though will also be submitted to 'mixed'
  • Your position in global leaderboard is now shown for each of the leaderboards
  • The two lasers (triple shot and automatic fire) have been rolled into one laser
  • Droids hang out behind you a little less
  • Now possible to make an eye-shot with the RailGun
  • Controllers no longer blink all the time

Graphical & UI updates
  • Decreased game load time significantly
  • Temporary marks left on the platform when you shoot, scuff up the platform as much as you like!
  • Optimized effects and shaders resulting in better overall framerates
  • New animated gun models and textures - space pirates like to look good right?
  • Updated and Streamlined menu - removed a lot of clutter to make way for all the amazing new stuff
  • Particle and weapon effects updated
  • Shield now comes in beautiful "space pirate" blue neon, which now also indicates when the shield has enough charge to perform a pulse blast using the trigger button.
  • HMD & computer screen is now blackened when the pause button is hit (menu button on the controller) and Space Pirate Trainer sounds are muted
  • Updated environment models and textures
  • Optional “relaxing” fog setting in the options menu
  • SuperSampling and Anti-Alias options menu (available options > advanced)

Audio updates
  • Updated 3D audio
  • Droids now clang when they collide with each other or the platform
  • QuarkCannon (single shot) now makes cooler, futuristic shot sounds
  • RayGun sounds absolutely devastating when combined with another RayGun (cross the streams! We dare you!)

Party Mode
Brand new mode made to turn your lounge room into an Arcade - perfect for playing SPT with your friends. Head to the the options menu and hit the ‘Party Mode’ button. Here you can limit gameplay to a number of games or minutes, and clear the dedicated party mode scoreboard. Once you then hit ‘Start Party Mode’ the game will leave the options menu and show a striped down Space Pirate Trainer interface, with just a ‘Ready to Rock’ button and a party mode leaderboard on the side. To exit party mode, hit the escape button on the computer’s keyboard.

To force Space Pirate Trainer to start in party mode, just create a text file called ‘partymode.cfg’ in the same directory as the Space Pirate Trainer executable, with the following text:

forcepartymode=1
forcecredits=5
forcetime=10

Be aware that you won’t be able to press escape to exit party mode until you change the settings in the partymode.cfg file and restart Space Pirate Trainer, or remove the file from the directory.

What to expect from the beta?

Creating a good game is all about choosing the right priorities. Instead of implementing every possible feature in a basic way, we are focusing on the stuff that makes Space Pirate Trainer shine, and continue to make them better.

In a few weeks we’re going to unveil the next major update: The Space Pirate Trainer Beta!

Here’s a brief list of some of the updates you can look forward to:

* Refined gameplay
* The Volton: a brand new melee weapon which includes the Plasmalink
* Two new gun-modes for the Bolton; the Ion grenade launcher and the “Shotworks” shotgun
* PowerUps (Machine gun / Shield / Missiles / Gravity field / Homing bullets)
* New droid types
* Balanced difficulty
* Wave selection / Party mode / Hardcore mode
* Graphical update
* Sound improvements
* ….

There are still plenty more things on our to-do list, which will be keeping us busy long after we’ve pushed out the beta.

Finally we must send out a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us over the past few months. Whether you’ve been playing Space Pirate Trainer, posting a review on the Steam store, telling your friends about it, tweeting your highscores or posting videos on YouTube - we’ve absolutely loved your feedback and taking them all in for how we can better Space Pirate Trainer leading up to the final release.

Cheers,
QC - I-Illusions

“This is the sort of experience that really shows off what the Vive can do. It's physically demanding, it's challenging and it's something that can only somewhat be conveyed in words or video.”

“I-Illusions has managed to create a very fun shooter experience, while removing the traveling element altogether, and it works really well.”

Remember those awesome classic arcade cabinets? Imagine if those were immersive... Space Pirate Trainer puts you in one of those; fighting off relentless waves of droids with all the weapons and gadgets you would ever need as a Space Pirate. You better dodge some of those incoming lasers though, since just using your shields won't get you in the top rankings. No real droids where harmed during the creation of this game.
Use your straps and stay in your VR area to make sure no humans will be harmed.

The alpha was fun, but the beta brings this game to the next level and I can't wait to see what the full game turns into. This is hands down the most fun game for the vive that I have played, so do yourself a favour and buy it.

Pros
- Work up a sweat shooting laser, grenades, and shot guns at flying robots whizing around your head.
- Work up a sweat whipping said robots into the ground and beating them with a futuristic laser stick.
- Work up a sweat diving for the ground and rolling to avoid lasers.

- Also great developers that up until this point have devlivered on their promises and not added any paid DLC. Regular and timely updates seems to be a rare thing with early access games but SPT has not disappointed.

Cons
- You are a hazard to furniture, loved ones, and small pets while playing this game.

Becoming one of my favourite games to play for a half hour break in the evening, including non-VR games.

I only hope that the developers bring back the option to quickly switch between your current and last weapon by hitting the top button, I found this really helpful in past versions of the game. It may also be a better way to choose between the shield and laser stick thing, at least as long as there are only the two options for that.

This update launched SPT back to the top of my must play titles in VR. The game was already fantastic, even if a bit basic. But it was polished, and now even more so. There's a tutorial! Every VR game needs this. Shields, graphics settings, visual variety in the weapons, only one music track but it fits the game and the other sounds are perfect.

Excited to see how much more the dev can improve this already amazing game. Glad I bought it early, because the price could be higher and it'd still be worth it.

Great game. Sci-fi themed shooter with bullet time. New update adds power-ups, which increases the fun.

If there were a con, the new update has options for changing graphics. I have a i7-6700k, 16Gb ram, 1080 and changing these settings to anything higher makes the game stutter bad. Would've thought I could take on the world with this setup.

This has been one of my favorite VR games to date. No matter how many I purchase, which at this point I believe is over 20, I always find myself going back to it. I loved how exciting it stays even though I would best describe it as an arcade shooter. After the recent update I feel that this amazing game has become even better. Unlike some of the VR titles I have purchased and or played I never seem to get tired of this one. Always full of action and always trying to beat your best score. I do not think I move around the whole play space like I do with this one tyring to dodge freakin lazer beams. It is always one of the first games I start people out on who have never played VR games. While not super forgiving, it is easy to learn the basics of the game and everyone always has fun. I feel that it is well worth the money you pay for it as I am sure you will find yourself going back to it as well. No commitments, just start the game and shoot drones. Love it! They have done a great job on this one!

The game which sold to me HTC Vive.

Space Pirate Trainer is the game which will take you to another dimension - a dimension full of angry droids, lasers and your faithful two guns. Or a shield and a gun. Or a sword'n'board. Or... two shields? You are the pirate, your methods are not to be questioned.

Embarc on an epic journey, where you can be:
- Neo, master of dodging bullets in slow-mo;
- A powerful jedi master of your choice, with a powerful blade at your side and some totally non-mystic powers which allow you to pull enemies towards enemy lasers, other obstacles or your own blade.
- A gunslinger, with his two faithful Colts and infinite ammo pack.
- A medieval knight... surrounded.. by.. space robot thingies?
- A badass commando with two auto-rifles at his sides and spraying almost-never-ending flow of plasma towards your enemies.
- A patient sniper, picking his targets one by one.

All of this mixing, swirling, switching all the time in a crazy whirlwind of action, explosions and your own battlecries. All of this under an epic soundtrack.

You get your three lives, warrior. Make the most of them. And then, when it's your turn again, come back for more.

Space Pirate Trainer is your game of choice during parties. With optimized flat-screen projection, it will show to your envying friends how badass you are, and how your score is better than theirs.

10/10 GOTY

p.s. A note to the devs: Thank you. Keep up with great work.

Excellent game for VR high score runs. It also gets you to practice your shooting. Lacks a bit of variety for now, but the dev already teased some new content :D

Space Pirate Trainer is an Awesome Experience, especially if you are new to the Vive. In addition, James Marvel's great Soundtrack makes the game all the more futuristic! SPT is an intense shooter, just like the old games, but with a VR twist. Truly a must buy!

I brought this game since it didnt come free with my vive & i was putting off reviewing this because words cant discribe how AWSOME this game is but now with the new update i feel compelled so i'll try my best.

firstly you have to understand that the feel of this game is incredible, epic music is playing as u fight against these things for your life, shooting them out the sky and then discuvering there is an overwelming amount more and you think "i barely survied 6 of you ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥s how am i meant to defeat 20?!?" and then you do it and its THE BEST FEELING. but what makes this game realy incredible is the dodging bullets like MOTHER♥♥♥♥ING NEO. you duck dodge and riggle your way out of 20 bullets and then pop them all off before they can take another shot before misscalculating and ducking to the floor again. im not a particulary fit person but this just gives you the adrenaline to do ♥♥♥♥ like that and not care. the game also looks incredible, for a first experience its perfect since you turn around and see that space ship and its just breathtaking. the landscape and partical physics as well as the explosions are just awe-inspiring too!

The update has improved even further. now it has a tutorial for those that you show the game to (which is super helpful!) and the newly added granade launcher is soo cool (although i wish it would scatter the robots a bit less since it tends to be more of a hinder than help - just nickpicking tho!). the temp upgrades are a neat idea that also rly adds to the gameplay, although it can lose some of the tension which is fine since you can turn it off depending on how you feel like playing that day. the object grabber is also fantastic and just makes the hole thing feel all the more epic! the firework gun is also a bunch of fun and is animated beautifully. However i will say i miss the 2 shot gun since its the one i used the most - perhaps a 'loadout' screen to select which weapons will appear on the gun select?

Overall fantastic game, seriously buy it!

Hours of competition and gameplay solo or with friends, party mode is legit fun with friends. gameplay is smooth and fluid, very easy to jump in and start shooting as if u had a real gun. Love that the dev's are putting out updates with graphics enhancments, looking forward to see what else they add.
