In FTL you experience the atmosphere of running a spaceship trying to save the galaxy. It's a dangerous mission, with every encounter presenting a unique challenge with multiple solutions. What will you do if a heavy missile barrage shuts down your shields? Reroute all power to the engines in an attempt to escape, power up additional weapons to blow your enemy out of the sky, or take the fight to them with a boarding party? This "spaceship simulation roguelike-like" allows you to take your ship and crew on an adventure through a randomly generated galaxy filled with glory and bitter defeat.

  • Complex Strategic Gameplay - Give orders to your crew, manage ship power distribution and choose weapon targets in the heat of battle.
  • Play at Your Own Speed - Pause the game mid-combat to evaluate your strategy and give orders.
  • Unique Lifeforms and Technology – Upgrade your ship and unlock new ones with the help of six diverse alien races.
  • Be the Captain You Want - Hundreds of text based encounters will force you to make tough decisions.
  • Randomized Galaxy - Each play-through will feature different enemies, events, and results to your decisions. No two play-throughs will be quite the same.
  • No Second Chances! - Permadeath means when you die, there's no coming back. The constant threat of defeat adds importance and tension to every action.

Loved it and want more. Any update would be fantastic. I guess that the mods are good to, but I'd love an official update to this game.
A few things to note:
You will die.
You will die a lot.
You will die more than you win.
You can't save your progress. You die, you start over.
HOWEVER:
When you win, you'll be honestly proud of yourself for fighting so hard to win, because you have to do so much in order to win that you will feel like you've finished a journey or something. Either way, it's very rewarding when you win.
The soundtrack is fantastic.
The time between starting the game and death is random, fun, and is also never exactly the same.
The side missions are fun, especially when you manage to unlock new ships. Plus the different species are interesting and sometimes game changing.
The subtle lore of the game and the backstory of the different species, the cause of the war, etc.

All in all, I'd recommend this game to someone who is cool-headed and loves a good old fashioned space explorer. And is willing to die.
A lot.
Seriously, prepare to die, and get ready to fly. Through an airlock. Or, you know, to victory.
Maybe.
FTL.
BUY IT.

Pro:
1- Each vessel are unique in their kind whatever the race you control the alternative ships give you a different experience.
2- Each race have their own attributes
3- There's no perfect ship! Some prefer to play defensively as other like rush like a pig in the trash! You can be succesful as long you anticipated the dangers.
4- The game is harder than it may look like. Harder in a good way, i mean contrary to other games of the same kind the CPU intelligence doesn't cheat, it use indepth strategy like an another human player would do.
5- Music are awesome.
6- Intuitive control
7- High replayability

Con:
1- Avanced mode is easier than normal mode. So i would suggest to new players to start in advanced mode to learn the mechanics before going to normal mode where the game is much more balanced, so by definition much harder.
2- As this is a "rogue-like" game, you can't save! Well you can it you make backup of the continue savefile, but there is no properly save-file system, so new player in this kind of game may get more time to learn the mechanic as they will often die early in the game...

A must have for any PC gamer.
It's cheap, fun, and you can kill people by exposure to space.
What more can you ask for!

This game is awesome, I could recommend this indie classic from 2012 to anyone! With randomly generated stages, two enemy figures instead of one, and a whole lot of dying, this game truly is in my mind, THE rogue like. That's not even where it stops, when you get bored of the original game, go ahead and play with the "advanced edition content" on to add all sortes of new stuff. If you want to go even further into FTL and get as much as possible out of it, install the Captain's Edition mod for it and it is almost a whole different game.

TL;DR get this game now before they realise it's a classic and they raise the price, it's worth it.

I have been playing this game for ages now and still haven't beaten or gotten tired of it. It's like building a house of cards each time. Great value. This is the first time I have deliberately tried to find other games by the same devs on steam, unfortunately no other games by Subset on steam at this time. Worth the purchase.

If I had a dime for every time I watched as my crew abandon ship as it crumbles into pieces, I'd own Barter Town. FTL is the kind of game that gives you an inch and takes a mile, but with all of the RNG that can screw you over at any given time, the game is fair. You can get through any sticky situation with some intuition, a roll of duct tape, and some finesse.

This game is really fun. I'm a bit late to the party (last major update was in 2014), but I picked this game up as it was fairly cheap and I'd briefly seen a let's play of it and it looked fun. The gameplay is challenging and a bit hard to pick up at first, but this adds to the replayability. I've played about 70hrs now, and I'm still not bored of it. Definitely worth the money.

Feels too much like punishment from the RNG god... And that was on the easy setting. Honestly, after five very short playthroughs (playthrough = lost game), the last two on "Easy" setting, I asked myself, "What should I have done differently to not lose?" The answer is, "I don't know."

On the last play, I was boarded by three aliens, any one of which, alone, could have chewed through my entire crew. The only way to avoid this was to not go to that location. That's a bit too arbitrary for me.

From the tips and walkthroughs, I get the impression that you can expect to lose dozens of times before you get it right. When your good strategy kisses the RNG god correctly, then you may pass through.

Ehh, not my cup 'o tea.

I highly recommend this game as a ship sim despite having endured many bitter defeats on Easy before finally getting victory against the final boss. There's overwhelming praise to read here and from the press, so I'll just say what made the game less than ideal for me:

-Randomness - Unless you can adapt your strategy fluidly, ya'll need RNGesus for getting favorable shops & events that fit your strategy in order to beat the final boss. This became too much for me to bare in non-easy difficulties.

-Alt ship configs - The alternative configurations to ships weren't appealing to me most of the time.

-Module configuration - Can't move parts of a ship around, or where the modules are after placement.

-Advanced edition - Didn't add a lot to the game for me, but maybe that's because the additional items or weapons didn't cater to my common strategies.
