What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Chronicon is a large project for just one person to maintain, so I ask the Steam community to participate in the development. I hope to be able to build a great community which gets to help shape the game itself.

My goal is to collect as much feedback as possible through frequent updates with fresh content, tweaks, and other additions, so that I may create a solid and polished game.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I'm aiming for a full release some time after the summer of 2016. However, delays are expected as the game is constantly growing in scope based on the very excellent feedback I've been getting over the forums!”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version will feature many more items, spells, abilities, areas, worlds, enemies, bosses, crafting and other mechanics. The goal is to have five complete worlds for you to discover and explore, slaying your foes and collecting the loot as you advance further. I also intend to have a lot of replayability through scaling difficulties and the option to loop the game with increasing challenge (and reward) each loop. A Hardcore mode will also be available.

Additional gameplay beyond the "Story" (end-game content) is also on the drawing board, but nothing is determined here yet.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Most features and mechanics are present, however there is a lot of content to be added, as the initial release (0.20.0) only featured one of the five planned worlds. Worlds will be added in major content patches over time, and smaller patches will be added frequently with various tweaks and additions. See the news section for recent changes!”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes, the final game will offer almost TEN times as much content as the initial release (v 0.20.0), and as such the price is lower while in Early Access. Major updates usually come with a small sale, too.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I will be actively participating in discussions on the Chronicon Steam Community Forums to answer any questions you might have, and reply to feedback. I would love to know what you like, dislike, and hear any suggestions or ideas you might have.

You can also reach me on twitter: @sqrbt.
And the official subreddit: r/Chronicon”

I've previously only written these announcements for larger or more significant updates, and just quietly published small updates. I figured I'd ask if you want an update note like this for each update! Please leave a comment to let me know what you think!

Anyway, I've taken care of the issues reported and tweaked and changed some stuff too. You should for example find more Crystal Essences now!

Let me know if you encounter any more problems.
Thanks!

Pros: Extremely addictive gameplay, good item selection, decent skill trees and class variations.
Cons: Actually it is not a con, but it would be fine to have more skill slots.

pretty fun beat-em-up action rpg, and you can't beat the split screen co-op. The price is right and it is a very playable early access.

I dont play this game Single Player, but as a game to play with a friend it is definitely a fun escape for a few hours.

I find myself turning to Chronicon over and over again when I feel like gaming lately and have only been disappointed by the fact that I have reached the end of the existing content (Early Access). Admittedly, this game caught me a bit off guard. I hadn't expected that I was going to like it as much as I do.

Having come from recently playing newer aRPG's and some twin-stick shooters, the inability to move and attack at the same time bugged me at first but eventually I adjusted. Now I don't even really notice it. One thing I do occasionally get annoyed with is the lack of variation in monster types. There is some variety between levels but you'll find yourself killing mob after mob of the same few monsters. There will be variations in their abilities/attacks but if would be nice if there was more diversity in general. Hopefully that will be improved upon some as the game development continues.

I have not tried the beta versions of the game yet, but from the sounds of it there are MANY improvements including a reworked skill tree and supposedly smoother movement/fighting. I am looking forward to them being released officially along with the additional chapters.

If you're looking for an inexpensive rpg with nice retro graphics, I highly recommend this one. For the price, it's hard to beat.

Alright so I bought this when it was in .55.2 beta and I have to say it has alot more content than you would expect from a early access game. At this point in time I have only maxed 1 char to level 100 and gotten only decent gear on him this took me close to 30 hours and it was enjoyable the whole time.

The pros of this game are that it has a ton of room to grow left while already being a fun game as it currently is better than alot of other games that aren't early access and cost double the price.

The cons right now are that the game is a little unbalanced you can beat the game with any character right now but you will have alot more difficulty with some than others while the frost warlock is broken op. The dev has already said hes working on rebalancing the classes so don't worry if you want to play another character before max level everything is viable frost mage is only good after you max him out and farm for specific gear end game.

All in all this game if perfect it reminded me alot of diablo 3 while giving a lot of fresh experinces. Now all we need is a cow level in the anomoly.

It's a dungeon crawler. The game doesn't attempt to innovate. It's decent but not very interesting.

Chronicon

Note: A key for this game was provided by the developer for the purpose of writing an informative review. No other compensation was given.

Introduction
==========
Chronicon is about a special magical device...a device that creates a link to the memories of the long-forgotten heroes of yore. A link that allows anyone who ventures forth to relive the past lives of those fallen heroes. You are chosen as one of the few this time...and being chosen is a great honor. What will you do now?

Chronicon is an action-adventure RPG, set in a (so far) small, Early Access world. Yes, Chronicon is in Early Access, but if you look past that tag, you might see the potential Chronicon has. Let's take a peek at what it has in store for you.

Gameplay
==========
So you've installed Chronicon and hit Play Game. You are greeted with a selection of 4 unique heroes: Templar, Berserker, Warden, and Warlock. Each one has a very distinct playstyle. The Templar and Berserker are melee characters, the difference being the Templar is defensive and the Berkserker is offensive. The Warden and Warlock are ranged, with their difference being physical offense (bow/arrows) and magical offense. Choose whichever playstyle suits you the best!

Each character has a small 'tree' of skills they can learn and assign to be used on the fly. You can access a new tier of skills every 5 levels. As you level up by killing monsters you gain skill points (1 per level), and you can invest these points into the skills of your choosing. The more points you invest into a particular skill, the more powerful or effective it becomes. Each character has unique skills and passives that can be learned, some offering great benefits, others offering new spells and actions.

At it's core, Chronicon is a dungeon crawler, similar to titles such as Diablo, Torchlight, or Titan's Quest. You explore a locale, kill monsters, collect loot, and level up. There are even some features in Chronicon that you may recall seeing in these other titles, such as the Portal Scroll which gives you a ticket back to the hub to sell your loot. There are also Waypoints, which you can use to traveI back and forth between predetermined points in each area. Speaking of areas, in the hub there are 5 Teleport Orbs, each one representing a dungeon/location. Only the Fallen Temple (first orb) is currently available, and during my 7-8 hours of play none of the other orbs were made available. The Store Page says these additional levels are coming in future updates. I played Chronicon with a controller, and the combat reminded me of a twin stick shooter. You move your character with the left stick, and aim your attacks with the right stick. It works, to be sure, but it was a little awkward for me at first to see this kind of control scheme in a game of this particular genre.

There are a lot of breakable objects, such as pots, urns, and baskets. These can be great for finding hidden loot and crystals (currency) but I felt like they served to padden the game a little bit. There are literally TONS of breakable objects in each stage, but only small groups of enemies scattered through each stage. I would much rather have mowed through hordes of enemies than break a room full of pots. This might be attributed to the fact that the game is still in Early Access, so I was able to look past it. When you did find monsters, it was fun to mow them down however you could, occasionally enjoying a slightly more prolonged encounter with a 'champion' monster. These are quite a bit more powerful than the normal monsters, and drop significantly more loot. Also spread throughout are small shrines, which take the form of statues. When activated, they may give you a buff or heal you, but they can also rarely spawn powerful creatures to attack you.

Certain loot can only be used by certain classes, and a lot of loot has its own special qualities. An item of one type can be very different than another item of the same type, depending on the quality. Try to stay outfitted with the best gear possible for the best chance of survival!

Graphics
==========
Chronicon has a very distinct sprite-base design. They aren't what I'd call 'basic', but they aren't too terribly detailed either. Don't get me wrong, they look great for sprites, and animations are crisp, clear, and flow smoothly. But don't expect anything special as you play.

The Fallen Temple looked really good...very dark and creepy, as something 'fallen' should be! The monsters fit the theme of the area...ghouls, skeletons, and ghosts running around everywhere. Even some bats thrown in for good measure. All of these have the same quality as the character sprites, and are animated pretty well.

Sound and Music
==========
This is easily the game's biggest downside. There is very little in the way of music or sound effects. The Fallen Temple has a low, somber tune that plays, but that's about it. Your attacks, breaking pots and urns, and hitting enemies have sound effects. But nothing else does. If it did, I hardly noticed. I also attribute this to the game being Early Access, so I was able to overlook it. Understanding that this is a very early Alpha build means that not all assets are implemented yet, and I'm sure they will be in the future!

Performance
==========
Chronicon ran without any hitches on my medium-tier rig. It should pose no issues to most players. It's not a very intense game, and I don't expect many people to run into any performance issues. Does your kitchen have a toaster? It can probably run Chronicon.

I played entirely with a controller, so I can confirm that it indeed has full controller support. The controls were very easy for me to use, even with the twin stick configuration combat has.

Final Thoughts
==========
At the end of the day, Chronicon is a decent entry into the action-adventure RPG genre. It's by no means the best, but it's not terrible. It's worth checking out and at least keeping an eye on as it develops further. With a handful of playable classes, lots of loot to collect, and small hordes of enemies to mow down, you should have a great time exploring the memories of past heroes. Future updates plan to include crafting, more quests, more items, a hardcore mode, and the 4 additional chapters currently missing from the hub. If you want to help this game out and see it suceed, please, by all means give it a purchase to support the devs! This is what Early Access is all about.

So much death. So much loot. So much fun.

Seriously, this game is a blast. A Stone. Cold. Blast. I got it for the positive reviews, thought I'd pop in for ten minutes (like I do with most newly purchased games) and then move onto my usual game of the day. Well, over two hours later, I came up for air in something of a state of bliss.

This game gives the carrot and stick perfectly. It's like Diablo 3 in that regard. One more dungeon for that one more piece of loot that'll give you better stats. There's so much loot its insane. The review that said to learn not to pick up everything ain't kidding. Slots are very limited, so you really have to curate what you want.

I've only planed one class, but I can't wait to play more. I mean four classes each with four skill trees? That's pretty awesome. So far, I'm just having a blast, and if you like fast-paced, loot-filled dungeon crawlers, you will too.

This game brought back memories of diablo 2. Lets make a list..
-Loot-Tons of it, and so much breakable items it makes you sick, as well as chests, Sets and Legendary Items as well!!
-Mobs- Normal, Champions, And Bosses..
-Char Progression- You level as you go, and gain access to skill trees, 4 per char. Wish there was attribute points but that is what gear choices are for.
-Health and Mana pots galore and you use them, keeps you busy. Also potions for buffs
-Secret areas that contain more loot
-Gambling!!
-Waypoints
-Even some of the sounds are similiar to diablo 2 :)
-Zones are MASSIVE and you can spend hours in them
-You will go to town a lot to sale loot so keep portal scrolls with you!!

This is going to be a fantastic dungeon crawler when completed, although there is much work needed it is very polished at its current state.

Recommend to any ARPG enthusiast that loves to loot and level.
Haven't tried Coop yet but can only imagine how fun that could be.

I originally started playing this game last year when it came out but I kind of fell off for a while. I came back about a week ago after looking through my library and saw i still had it installed so I thought I would check it out, and honestly I forgot how fun this game is. Its got great elements implemented like the talent tree, different specs, the bloodfests, and the super long dungeons. Plus you gotta love the loot, because i'm sure i'm not the only one that gets excited when they see a legendary drop on the floor lol.
-Overall the game is super worth the price and i guarentee you'll have plenty of game time
-Only played for 21 hours and i have two lvl 50 characters (max level is 100 I think so i've got ways to go)
-Still in beta so there's a lot more to come!
-Also I've created a channel on youtube to showcase some of the game play for mid Level kind of stuff so check it out if you want! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKlEkZoMdX4

To be honest i was completely on the fence about this game for a long time. Primarily because of the simple gameplay mechanics. Boy am I glad I jumped in and got this game. The game is pixle art imo and the "simple gameplay mechanics" go out the window once you start getting loots! each item has a set of special stats that greatly improve your character. the randomly generated dungeons are fantastic and spice things up a bit. overall i would suggest getting this game if you enjoy games like diablo and other loot based games! for $10 you can do alot worse!

Lets start with the fact that this game is in Beta still: It's not perfect, but it very well can be.

Pros
- Very smooth gameplay
- Well done dungeons
- Leveling system is well fleshed out

Cons
- Combat feels a bit odd only attacking left or right
- Too often is loot found that doesnt benifit your character
- Dialogue moves a bit to slowly

Overall for what it is I give it a 7 out of 10

well worth a look for the price and could see a great game by release
