Dungeon Souls Update #15.2

Scope

Details of this section:
This section contains the scope of what patches were made in the current version.

Patch 15.2 introduces several bug fixes. It also introduces a revamped passive system, as well as some minor refinements to the User Interface.

Game Elements

Passives

Revamped

The passives mechanism has been changed. Previously, the passives bonuses would only apply at the starting stats of the hero. Here follow the changes:
-When the maximum health, attack damage, magical damage, magical resist or defense stats increase, the passive bonus is also applied.
-Speed passive will only be based off of the hero's initial speed.
-Critical effect adds to the hero's critical effect.
-Hp regen is now based off of a flat amount, instead of the player's percentage health.
-(CHANGED)Greed now increases all gold gained by 4% per level, up to a total of 40% increase.

Thanks to Steam user Dynatriel for the suggestion!

User Interface
-Changed the "Press [Tab]" key text to "[Tab] to assign stats".
-The stats level up text indicator now blinks to call the player's attention.
-The skill-up icons now glow to call the player's attention.
-The walls on the mini-map are now represented by solid-white blocks instead of wireframe squares.
-The hero emits small particles when holding an Angel Feather.
Flavour Text
-Added flavour text option for Speed Up
-Added flavour text option for Experience
-Added flavour text for damage dealt to enemies

Gameplay
(NEW)Gamepad Reticule Aid: when using a gamepad, the aiming reticule will go along with the player's movement when the right stick is on rest. This should make it easier to attack incoming enemies.
Thanks to a Steam user who suggested this idea! Unfortunately, we haven't been able to find your account, but you shall not be unrecognized!

Items

We've added a story-sensitive item, hence the spoiler!

(NEW)Murderer's Ring

Item Effect: Adds +10 to physical damage, magic damage, magic resist and defense. Every 5 seconds, spawns lasers to damage nearby enemies.
Item Class: Equipable (Evil)
Special Thanks: Thanks to Steam user Dynatriel for suggesting that the players who kill the owl should also be rewarded (evily)!

If you want to suggest more items, please visit the item suggestion thread and share your ideas!

Enemies

NOTE: We know we haven't been implementing any new enemies, but we are keeping a close look at the suggestions! We're going to implement a few in the future, so don't worry if you think your suggestion isn't being read - we can assure you it is!

If you want to suggest more enemies, please visit the enemy suggestion thread and share your ideas!

Arcane Forge

The arcane forge is a place where you can forge items and weapons to use in future runs for your heroes. You do so by using recipes collected in the Forbidden Library (random drop from monsters) and
by collecting materials from your runs. Whenever an item reaches full stack, it will drop ingredients to be used on the arcane forge! Thanks to everyone who contributed, specially to Steam user Herbrek for the suggestion!

We've added story-sensitive ingredients, hence the spoiler!

Ingredients

(NEW)Wizard Remenant - Used to craft Murderer's Ring.
(NEW)Owl Remenants - Used to craft Murderer's Ring.

Recipes

(NEW)Murderer's Ring Recipe
Recipe Rarity: Evil.

Bug Fixes

Details of this section:
This section contains the bug fixes that were applied in issues detected in the previous versions.

-Fixed a bug where Selene would stop attacking if the player stood at a great distance.
-Fixed a bug where Angel Feather would not get picked up, failing to revive the player.
-Fixed a bug where Arcane Forge ingredients were not getting consumed if their stack count was 1.
-Fixed a bug where you could use activable items during cutscenes.
-Fixed a bug where Skeleton King would sometimes cause the game to crash.
-Fixed a bug where disabling the critical flavour text would not really disable it.
-Fixed a bug where pressing the Q key would cause the game to take a screenshot and make it lag. This key is now configurable in the controls menu.
-Fixed a bug where Vital Armour would not heal you.
-Fixed a bug where Selene's Knives could cause the game to crash under certain conditions.
-Increased FPS by a small amount.

Known Issues

Here follows a list of all the known issues and/or suggestions that we've taken a look into but were unable to fix for this patch. Hopefully, this list gets shorter with each patch :)

Known Issues
-Due to the way the engineer behaves, his spider are dealing more damage than anticipated (each spider is dealing the displayed tooltip damage). We'll try to balance this issue out.
-Some dungeons can spawn without any marks. We have special plans for this situation ;)
-A new mechanic to cap the movement speed of heroes is needed, due to some of them still going sonic-like when using certain movement speed objects.
-The game has performance issues on some areas.

Considerations In Up-Coming Patches

Details of this section:
This section describes the suggestion that are being taken into account during the next patches. It does not mean that they will be implemented fully (or even at all). However, it does mean that we liked the idea and will try to implement it! :)

-A GUI that displays buffs/debuffs and extra information about what's going on in the game. Thanks to Steam user Herbrek and Xerxes Asuras for the suggestion!

-Quick save and quick load feature. Thanks to Steam user kierasam for the suggestion!

-Multiplayer functionality. This feature is an end-development feature but we intend to make it happen!

-A page on the main menu that allows you to view all the items you obtained during previous runs, as well as their descriptions. Thanks to Steam users QwiK and Zior for the suggestion!

Dungeon Souls Update #15

Scope

Details of this section:
This section contains the scope of what patches were made in the current version.

Patch 15 introduces the final boss area where the player will fight with Selene. We've also tweaked arcane forge's user interface and added new features to it.

Game Elements

(NEW) Life steal mechanism has changed. It now displays a text informing how much the player has healed with the enemy's damage. Also, life steal will benefit from ALL damage dealt to an enemy,
whether it was from the player or not.

Areas

(NEW)The End
A new area has been added! "The End" is the game's final area and the area where you get to fight Selene, the Dungeon Master. This area is currently a Work In Progress (W.I.P.) and as such, it may have a few bugs
and missing art assets. However, it should be playable and enjoyable too! It is still missing final cutscenes, but those will come later

Unlike other areas, this area does not randomly generate itself. It is a final challenge for the player and will always have the same shape and monsters in it.

UI

We've changed the way currency is drawn in the game. Every currency drawn will now have marks seperating each three pairs of digits. For example, the number 123456 will be drawn as 123.456

Items

(NEW)Bloodletting Sword

Item Effect: Constantly drains 3 hp every second, but gives 100% life steal.
Item Class: Cursed
Special Thanks: Thanks to Steam user TBYK101 for the item suggestion!

(NEW)Redprint

Item Effect: Traps deal higher damage and can damage enemies.
Item Class: Cursed
Special Thanks: Thanks to Steam user Drybones08 for the item suggestion!

(NEW)Glass Cannon

Item Effect: All defense stats (defense and bonus defense) are converted into physical damage. All resists stats (magic resists and bonus magic resist) are converted into magical damage. Any stats gained from other items will also be converted.
Item Class: Cursed
Special Thanks: Thanks to Steam user The Long Hard Dick Of The Law for the item suggestion!

(NEW)Pet Potato

Item Effect: Increases gold and experience gained by 10%.
Item Class: Uncommon
Special Thanks: Thanks to Steam user Speggi for the item suggestion!

(NEW)Ninby's Grace

Item Effect: Provides the player with a shield whose strength is equal to 10% of the player's maximum health. This shield regenerates every 10 seconds.
Item Class: Equipable
Special Thanks: Thanks to Steam user Ninby for their participation on the forums and the game. This is our way of thanking you! (and we're sorry we couldn't find your steam profile)

(NEW)Herberk's Pendant

Item Effect: Has a 50% chance of redirecting incoming enemy projectiles. This effect occurs every second.
Item Class: Equipable
Special Thanks: Thanks to Steam user Herberk for their participation on the forums and the game, specially with the suggestion of arcane forge. This is our way of thanking you!

If you want to suggest more items, please visit the item suggestion thread and share your ideas!

Enemies

(NEW)Shadow ???

- A new enemy approaches with the identity of a known nemesis.

(NEW)Selene

-The dungeon master awaits you.

NOTE: We know we haven't been implementing any new enemies, but we are keeping a close look at the suggestions! We're going to implement a few in the future, so don't worry if you think your suggestion isn't being read - we can assure you it is!

(NEW)Equipables

Arcane forge now has a new type of item: equipables. Equipables are items that you can carry between runs and that are crafted with recipes. Equipables are common to all classes.

I want to like this game, but it has a glaring flaw: All of the melee classes are extremely underpowered. If you play any of the other classes you'll probably be fine, but the melee classes are so useless, I just can't in good conscience recommend a game with such poor character design. In the early levels you'll spend much of your time just swinging mindlessly at individual enemies while your AoE skills are on cooldown, watching their health inch away one swing at a time.

Aside from this the game is pretty good, although the gamepad support could be better and the potion system is a little dubious. But I just can't recommend it until the classes receive better balancing.

// Dungeon Souls is a 2d Bit Style Dungeon Game: //
// Schuitje82 - Extended Review //

Core Gameplay:
============

For the players who have no clue what kind of game this is.
Dungeon Souls is a game you choose a character and try to get far as possible.
If you die...... you lose it all.... LVL... items... everything.
So the big challenge is to survive and get good in the game and upgrade your character good as possible.
Don't forget to buy items in the stores because these can help you on the way.

Controls:
=======

What I find very weird about this game is that you play with mouse and keyboard.
Keyboards is for walking and using items and mouse for aiming.
This kind of games works perfectly with a controller for fast gameplay.
And just relax in the couch and play some on the big screen if possible.
Beside the controller part the game plays good with keyboard and mouse.
And controller your character feels really great.

Sounds & Graphics:
===============

The games looks as sounds like an old game.
They did a really great job with this.
The bit style graphic game play gives you the feeling you are playing an old game.
Just like old times for me '90 era of the Super Nintendo console.
Soundtrack as the small sounds are done very well.

Overall:
======

I think this one of the best Dungeon 8bit style games I played in years.
Playing this games feels very smooth and a lot of fun !!
It's haves a few classes to play with and some tactics to play this game.
I've try's a few round on easy as normal mode.
Controls really needs to get used to because there is no controller support this would be very nice if they fix this.
So you need to play this game with keyboard and mouse.

It's still a early access game when I played and made this review.
So some things will be made much better on the way they release this game.

It's a great and unique game to play and I can really recommend this game.
I will give it a 8/10 score.

Dungeon Souls is one of those special gems of a game in the sea of bad indie games. Let me start this off by saying: The dev definitely listens to the players and takes their opinions into full consideration. I see replies to questions and bugs on the discussions page and it really makes me happy. I have a feeling that this game will go far.

Now, with that out of the way... The review, shall we?

Dungeon Souls has to be some of the most fun I've had in a long while. The game only came out a few days ago and it's got a solid start. There's not a whole lot there, but the stuff that is there is pretty dang fun. There's plenty of items, all of which are passive (except potions). There are also orbital items, also passive, that are very useful. Each of the 6 characters (Barbarian, Archer, Thief, Warrior, Wizard, Cleric) has their own skillset. Each one feels and plays differently than the next, which is great. Each dungeon floor is randomly generated. There are different "tile sets" for the dungeon, which is usually switched every 3-4 floors (I haven't counted, but I think that's close). There are also different enemies for each tile set. The bosses are decent, however there isn't much strategy involved as it's mostly spamming your attack, your skills, and potions while dodging projectiles. I hope to see more work on that aspect. There also isn't much enemy variety, which may get repetitive.

However, I do believe the developer will address these issues soon. I mean, the game just released on Steam (pretty successfully, if I do say!), so I can't rip on it too much.
There are some kinks to work out, yes. There is plenty of work for the developer to do.

I would strongly recommend purchasing this game ASAP. Support the developer!

Nuclear Throne and Risk of Rain had a baby.

It does need local co-op and a bit more variety, it almost seems grindy at times.

Although, in my opinion, it is more fun than Nuclear Throne or Risk of Rain.

It's a fun game to play when you're bored or have nothing else to play. In the Jungle themed dungeon's the spikes that move around are a little bit too over powered.

Pros
 • Gameplay is flawless
 • Large variety of objects
 • Unique Bosses
 • Characters have unique powers
 • Very Optimized
 • Love the overall style of the game
 • Developers listen to their players

Cons
 • Not alot of customization
 • Needs more environments/events
 • No Multiplayer ;c

To sum it up, it's in EARLY ACCESS and the developers are still developing. So buy this game and give it a go. You won't be disappointed as I assure you there will be more updates being released soon.

I also see this game is on Game Jolt, so give it a go on there first if you wanna test it out before buying.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Update[03/20/16]
New Pros
 • Alot of new items added(Since last update)
 • Developers are still working on the game
 • Changed the environments.
 • Added a timer for the "The Reaper" to appear after doing all marks.
New Cons
 • Removed the old Potion stack. ;c(Makes it more challenging though!)
Overall: The game is still great and is still being developed. Even though this game is not as popular as some other games, the developers are still working hard at making it better!
Dungeon Souls is an indie action RPG with roguelike elements. In this game, you play as one of six adventurers, including a Barbarian, Archer, and more. You must activate Marks along the dungeon floor in order to advance deeper into the depths in search of the Soul Orb, the only way to regain your soul. Every few levels, you'll come across a deadly boss who will drop epic loot if you can defeat them. You'll need powerful items and your own skills to survive and succeed.
The game draws inspiration from games like Risk of Rain, Nuclear Throne, Overture, BitVenture and Shoot First. The gameplay is easy to learn but tough to master. There are three main elements: an autoattack and two special skills with some cooldowns. Items gained can passively increase your characters stats or add special procs to your attacks. Killing enemies yields EXP points to level up and increase your base stats and gems for purchasing items from shops. There's a good amount of variety among the items and enemies that can be found, and the boss battles are frenetic and challenging. In true roguelike fashion, the game is definitely hard, no matter what difficulty level you choose. However, it isn't as RNG-dependent as most other games are, and it definitely rewards skillful play. There is also permadeath, so you can't save progress between runs. However, money that you accumulate is kept and can be used to permanently upgrade your favorite characters, which balances some of the difficulty you can have when starting fresh.
At the time that this review was posted, the game is still in Early Access. Though the game is fully playable and is totally fun and enjoyable, it isn't a perfect release. Some of the elements are very unbalanced, such as traps and the melee classes. Playing as either one of them can almost guarantee a swift death as they are ridiculously underpowered compared to the other characters. Traps like sliding spike-balls and triggered boulders can quickly end a run. Though I've never experienced any, players in the forums have reported some game-breaking bugs or can't even run/download the game.
Still, the developer, Mike Studios, is dedicated and is constantly tweaking the game. Before release on Steam, Dungeon Souls has gained a notable fan-following on other gaming sites, such as itch.io, Indie DB, and Game Jolt. All in all, the game is good in its current state and is definitely worth buying now if you're a fan of hack n' slash, roguelites, and dungeon crawlers.
TL; DR: For fans of Risk of Rain, Nuclear Throne, and The Binding of Isaac.
This game fills the empty place in my heart where RotMG used to be. It has everything I want in a roguelike bullet hell, from challenging mobs, to the eventual over-estimation of my own abilities! I even get that sunken feeling in my gut when I lose an awesome character!
Can't wait for multiplayer, and I'm looking forward to seeing all the new dungeons and mobs that are in store for this game.
10/10 Will definately over-estimate myself again! xD
This game is very fun, and "short". By short, I mean it took 17 hours to make 4x new game+ equivalent (beat last boss, start at first map with everything from before) and get over 1e6 gold, which is a lot.
With the new passive system, the melee characters will last a long time and are fun, albeit their damage output is generally lower compared to ranged classes.
A couple things that still need to be addressed:
 • Melee classes are grossly underpowered and unless you dump all stat points into Def/Res you can die on a moment's notice after the first cycle
 • The menu is a total pain to navigate with mouse/keyboard
 • Nightblade is incredibly broken due to being able to endlessly increase defense but also incredibly boring to play due to lack of area of high damage skills
Otherwise, it's a very good Nuclear Throne style action roguelite that's very easy to pick up and play. Runs perfectly with no performance issues/crashes as of yet.
Probably the most satisfying roguelite I've ever played. I've only had this for four days, and I already have 25 hours on it.
The only thing I can think of that I do not enjoy at the time of 15.2 is that the final boss takes way too long to fight. Still doesn't stop me that I fought them 6 times in one run.
It's been quite a long time since I last played one of these roguelikes and by god, I loved it!
I mainly played as the necromancer so far, and most of the first bosses share similar patterns but, that quickly changes especially once you get to the later bosses.
This game includes a substantial amount of lore some of which, you would never even notice was there unless you searched for it. You quickly grow attached to your hero, and when he/she dies you probably throw your keyboard half-way across the room but, it is that death that makes you strive to do better. That determination to get farther then you ever have.
The ability to unlock new classes by playing the game is very fun. I remember when I saw the wizard one and I immediately set off to find out where the heck Merlin was.
And lastly, the visuals of this game are so nice! Some people may not like the pixelated look but, it fits the roguelike genre so perfectly. The visuals don't distract you from the story and/or gameplay but they are just enough to make everything look perfect in conjunction.
Buy this game :D
Look, I struggled to decide if i could recomend it. I really found it fun and interesting, especially something that I havent seen in many top down games like this. You have no I-frames. This means you dont have any breathing room after you take damage. But this can also lead to some pretty unfair deahts. As a class like thief, you have almost no health, and potions only restore 8 health to you in normal mode. And some enemies can teleport right in front of you, doing 8 points of contact damage per tick. As thief, this constant damage can lead to death before you have time to react, especially if you are already injured. Many ranged enemies can spot you outside of the screen, not letting you see when to dodge. And pro-tip, boulder traps will ♥♥♥♥ you up. Which leads me to another one of my complaints, alot of stuff can be happening on the screen at once, so you might not see the trap mark, or the activation notice. And when you level up, the game doesnt pause to let you choose, which means you have to choose hastily so you dont get destroyed by some telporting enemy. But past all that, i cant stop playing it. Its fun, you feel like you progress with the forge, the upgradable passives, the level system in general, I love it. Each class feels unique, I really love this game.
But active items need a buff, I find like one per 10 runs, and all of them i have found are pretty bad.
Get this game.
