The Firewatch Audio Tour

We're launching a major update to Firewatch, and within it you'll be receiving The Firewatch Audio Tour.

A few months ago we sat down and thought it'd be great to ship a commentary mode with Firewatch, so, we did the logical next thing and started making one. And then we made some more. And then we thought it'd be neat to build some exhibits out in the forest that would show you how we made certain things in the game. Then we added a scavenger hunt. Then, after a time, we realized we didn't have a commentary mode on our hands, we had a full-on audio tour and tomorrow you'll get to play it!

Featuring

  • Over three hours of developer and actor commentary
  • Almost a hundred collectible audio tapes
  • Concept art displays, lighting demos, animation how-to's and more
  • If you like Firewatch, game development or a cross section of the two, this is for you!

We'll be putting out patch notes tomorrow for non-featured updates (mostly Mac bugs and small fixes here and there) but until then, get excited for the Firewatch Audio Tour!

Just Updated

Firewatch is now available with subtitles in French, German, Spanish, Russian and Simplified Chinese!

Along with a host of content fixes, we've updated the game to have language, ui and menus subtitles in a wide variety of languages.

About This Game

Firewatch is a single-player first-person mystery set in the Wyoming wilderness.

The year is 1989. You are a man named Henry who has retreated from his messy life to work as a fire lookout in the Wyoming wilderness. Perched high atop a mountain, it’s your job to look for smoke and keep the wilderness safe. An especially hot, dry summer has everyone on edge. Your supervisor Delilah is available to you at all times over a small, handheld radio—your only contact with the world you've left behind. But when something strange draws you out of your lookout tower and into the forest, you’ll explore a wild and unknown environment, facing questions and making choices that can build or destroy the only meaningful relationship you have.

A Note: Firewatch is a video game about adults having adult conversations about adult things. If you plan on playing with a younger gamer, that might be good to know going in.

Includes

  • A stunningly beautiful wilderness environment that expands as you explore.
  • A tailor-made story: the choices you make shape the narrative and build relationships.
  • An edge-of-your-seat mystery.
  • Secrets and discoveries to be made over every hill.

Featuring

  • Living, breathing characters brought to life by Cissy Jones (The Walking Dead: Season 1) and Rich Sommer (Mad Men)
  • A spectacular wilderness environment by Olly Moss (Illustrator) and Jane Ng (The Cave, Brutal Legend)
  • A thrilling story and script by Sean Vanaman and Jake Rodkin (The Walking Dead: Season 1, Poker Night at the Inventory)
  • A stirring original soundtrack by Chris Remo (Gone Home)
  • Fluid first-person animation by James Benson (Ori & The Blind Forest)
  • Gameplay scripting and design work by Patrick Ewing (Twitter) and Nels Anderson (Mark of the Ninja)
  • Programming by Will Armstrong (Bioshock II), Ben Burbank (Costume Quest 2, Space Base DF-9), and Paolo Surricchio (Deadpool, Call of Duty Advanced Warfare)

Gorgeous game with a really great story. Unfortunately that's about it.

Pros:
+ Beautiful game
+ Amazing and gorgeous environment. Loved walking in the woods and looking at the scenery.
+ Great story
+ Interesting characters. You really feel like you're connecting with them
+ This is more something that I like personally but some might not like this: the fact that you actually have to navigate using a map and compass instead of having a mini-map or a HUD with waypoints to guide you. Really helps you get immersed into the environment and story.

Cons: (some of these are things that personally bothered me but not necessarily major problems)
- As much as I like walking in the woods from one place to another, sometimes going back to certain places or backtracking feels a bit tiring and sometimes tedious. Maybe that's the point but sometimes I got annoyed by that.
- Can't go back to the previous day which resulted a couple of times in doing something I didn't actually want to do and not being able to change it
- Too many unanswered questions by the end of the game
- Disappointing ending
- Game is relatively short and there's no replayability at all

If you like narrative/story-driven games, definitely get this game but I would recommend waiting for it to be on sale.
Game is not worth the full price in my opinion.

This game made me go through an emotional rollercoaster, my imagination made the tale a lot scarier than it actually was.

But rarely am I left feeling this.. empty after a game. I connected to the two main character in this game. I giggled over jokes and..the ending made me long for more.

If there was ever a game that I both loved and hated, it would be Firewatch.

I think of what this game could have been and it pains me that it never went there. I really wanted to like this game. Even now, I wish I was writing a totally positive review but my conscience won't allow it.

And yet, credit has to be given where it's due so here are the things that I liked:

1) A beautifully designed game world, where all you mostly do is hike. Go from Point A to Point B, investigate and get back. But this part of the game is still enjoyable due to the pretty landscapes. And the fact that you have to navigate using a hand-held map!
2) That your only other human interaction is with someone over a walkie-talkie.
3) Voice acting and dialogs. This should probably be top of the list. Both Henry's and Delilah's voice work is top-notch. And probably the only thing that will stay with you post-game.

I'm struggling to come up with a fourth point and I guess you can see the problem with this game already.

The game starts off as a go-there-investigate-this adventure. But there's only so many times you can walk through the same bushes before it gets boring. Fairly, at this point, the game throws a mystery in. Something strange is brewing, there are some unexplainable events, and you are somehow the target - very LOSTesque, rite? You wish. You wait for the big reveal, a payoff - and it never comes! All you get is an anti-climax. And the developers fervently hope you feel empty after the game ends. But I felt more dissatisfied than empty.

And that's a shame, because had this game left me with a "Wow!", I would have probably called it the greatest game in the recent times. But no, like I said the game never goes there.

So what this game is then, is a fairly enjoyable walking simulator which could have also had a great story, if only. For $20 and roughly 6 hrs of gameplay at max, the price-to-fun ratio is just off.
If you still want to get this, wait for a sale.

P.S. I'm giving this a thumbs-up because I still want people to experience this game, despite the flaws. But in effect, my recommendation is both a Yes and No, depending on you.

I bought this game I believe on the release date with really high expectations, but I heard a lot of people complain about the end. For me that was no problem.
I find this game very entertaining with a great atmosphere. The graphics are very cartoon like but somehow realistic as well. I love this game, great story, great humor. Some may find the ending not good enough, I liked it even though I'm normally not a fan of these kind of endings. Even though it is only like 4 hours of playtime for one playthrough, I think this is worth the money. For an even better atmosphere and some very good music I also recommend buying the soundtrack.

It a has a great story and you can add a bit of personality to Henry even though he isn't you.
The thing is I finished this in as you can see 2.8 hours. If I hadn't gotten lost a few times I imagine I could have actually made it in two. While the content in this game is good namely the story I don't feel like this game is long enough to justify getting it. That and a certain amount of time in this game is spent walking from place to place and retracing steps.
I'll repeat this since I can see you mousing over the "No" with a twitching finger, it's good but it doesn't last as long as I feel I could justify the purchase.

Firewatch is definitely a unique game in the sense that it gives pretty environments, solumn quiet moments of interacting with nature and the exploration of human behavior and interaction. The back and forth between Henry and Delilah is involved and deep, and that alone makes the game pretty awesome.

The bad part is the plot. The game has a fantastic set up. Wife with early onset dimensia, two girls getting "taken" in the woods, threats of blackmail, a mysterious figure showing up, burned research centers, bugged comms... It was a great start. Then the ending came. And it was just an awkward goodbye between Delilah and Henry and we find out "oh the kid fell and the dad didn't want to deal with it". No conspiracies, no elaborate plots, just playing with the human mind. And while sometimes this is nice (after all this is a game about human interaction) that much build up leading to almost nothing is very disappointing. I beat the game in 3 hours, and the price at the time of purchase was $20. Maybe if this was an $8 game, I would be ok with this. But the game is far too short and the ending sucked.

With that said, it is still worth playing if it goes on sale, because the journey up to the end is quite nice. Just don't expect there to be anything at the trail head once you reach it.

9/10. Good graphics, amazing story, and great voice actors.

I got this game as a gift a while ago. I didn't really know much about it, I actually thought it was a survival game. Only recently have I gotten the graphics card to play it, and it's great. The music only appears at special intervals, which make them even more compelling. When I found something (that involves major spoilers, so I won't say it) really important near the end of the game, the music really swelled to like, a really sort of meaningful, but also really sad theme. So, that's pretty cool. The voice actors are phenomenal. It really does feel like they're actually feeling the emotion. There's plenty of joke opportunities, but don't think that means it's not serious.
Trust me, it is.
The story is really good, especially in the last few days. Some people thought the ending was anticlimatic, but I disagree. It's a normal ending, a normal ending that a normal story would have.
Although this isn't really a normal story.

The only problem I have is that it seems kind of dry near the center. I think there should be more days in the center of the game- There's the first three days, a couple two-minute scenes of the middle, and then a bunch of revelations in the final five days.

Otherwise, great game.

This game clearly offers not enough for this price. Although this game is a stroy walkthrough, the story has not much depth and is not very intersting or enlightening, altough a the beginning it seems to become an overwhelming good story - it will not!

If you like the screenshots of this game you will probably like the artstyle. Dialogs are also well done and sound natrual.

However, all in all: Bad story, short gameplay (only about 4 hours) and a price of 19€. Therefore, I recommend spending the money for another game.

This game is very good, I have a few things to say though.

1) There are a few glitches that I noticed in my initial and only playthrough including
-Grass Floating over the ground
-Getting stuck on a rock for about 30 seconds xD
-Legs inside of the rock wall when rappelling

2) If you're on the edge of buying this game I should let you know it's quite short although a great experience 4 hours in total is what I'm logged playing and I've made 1 complete playthrough

3) A playthrough on YouTube can get you most of the same experience if you watch an unedited one although you have no control over dialouge

SO boring. The storyline seemed promising at the start, but ended up into pure weirdness and I just didn't care about the ending. They just get you to walk around for most of the game with no real reward. A good few stupid glitches too. Gameplay is awful and unintuitive. Graphics/landscape really nice and there are some funny/scary bits I guess. But they don't ever come to fruition. Absolutely would not recommend. Waste of money.

I would absolutely recommend this game. However there is one proviso: you have to be the sort of gamer who enjoys story progression rather than just shooting your way from start to finish. Because that's what this games is, a story told through conversational interactions with another character as well as world exploration. There is no action. Just a compelling and wonderfully crafted narrative combined with an intriguing mystery set in an idyllic and beautiful world. So if you are up for a violence free adventure through the forests of Shoshone with only a sarcastic coworker on the radio and your turtle for company, get this game.

Very enjoyable game. I had a small hiccup where my computer would restart if I walked into a certain area, but considering I never actually needed to go there, it was easy to avoid. Story was engaging, gameplay is smooth; overall it was a great experience. Looking forward to the feature film.

The Bad:
Too damn short.
Mystery seems deep and grand. Its not.
Limited use on pick ups (Most do absolutely nothing)
So much useless interaction. Possible additions would fix a lot of it: A fishing mini-game, books could be read, make coffee/cook, eat/sleep, use first aid kit/get wounded, repelling/climbing required actions on the player's part, thirst/hunger (looking at you granola bar), Turt Reynolds interaction, SOMETHING! This game is all radio and walking. Very few items need to be picked up or examined.
Radio Response time gap was too short.
An ending that reflected your choices.

The Good:
Beautiful.
Stunning.
Stylistic without losing suspension of disbelief.
Calm, wonderful exploration.
Smooth and intuitive mechanics.
Audio was top quality.
Fun and engaging as heck.

Summary: Wait until its on sale. Its 6 hours taking your sweet time.

Good game with the story of the two main characters in the center of the plot. Both have faced difficult (tragic) times in their everyday lives and use the time in seclusion to try to get their heads straight. The plot is told only by the radio communication during their job. The setting and style are quite unique and charming, the dialogues witty. It's an exploration and mystery game with a fitting ending. Definitely worth playing if you're interested in character development and a bit of mystery.
