ScotRail Class 68 Update Available Now

In response to your important feedback on a variety of add-ons available for Train Simulator 2017, we have today released an update for the ScotRail Class 68.

Here is a list of what has been addressed:

  • Braking technique instructions have been added to the manual
  • Tail lights will now show when operating a consist in Top and Tail formation
  • The ETS Condition lamp in the cab ceiling now emits ambient light
  • The auto brake handle has been corrected to ‘PBL-style’ operation as per the prototype. However, it is not possible to include the emergency brake notch at full travel of the handle (adding this meant you would enter emergency brake condition every time you applied brakes)
  • Emergency brake can no longer be activated by using the auto brake handle. The application can only be made by using the slam switch on the cab desk or backspace key
  • The locomotive numbering has been fixed and will no longer generate erroneous vehicle numbers
  • The throttle and brake mouse movement direction in the 3D cab environment has been corrected
  • The braking range of the combined throttle and brake handle is now a granular control and no longer notched as per prototype
  • Hazard light operation and function has been corrected
  • The blue tractive effort bar now show properly after the red tractive effort bar was shown
  • When the locomotive is in forward or reverse, holding the DSD pedal upward has been corrected to sound the vigilance alarm and dump the brakes a few seconds later as per prototype
  • The auto brake has been corrected to blend the dynamic brake as per prototype
  • The dynamic brake functionality has been corrected so that it no longer causes jerky movements at slow speeds
  • The sun blind is now operable
  • The passenger saloon lighting now illuminates when the ETS button is pressed
  • The Driver Safety Device message box now displays the appropriate message in the top right corner
  • The Mk2 FO vehicle body has been fixed to ensure proper position of the passenger doors
  • A fault which resulted in the throttle lever becoming impossible to control has been fixed
  • The translucent rear cab wall isolation diagram has been fixed
  • The straight air brake handle has been fixed to allow faster application of brakes
  • Brake force on the locomotive has been tuned to be more like the prototype
  • The manual has been corrected to show the proper vehicles
  • The scenario ScotRail Saviour has been fixed to allow players to achieve 1000 points
  • Coach numbering has now been corrected to show the apporpriate numbers
  • The Driver Safety Device has now been fixed to register appropriate resets

If you own the ScotRail Class 68, the update will download automatically from Steam. If you have any problems/queries with regard to the update, leave a comment below or submit a ticket to our support site where our Support Team will be ready to assist at dovetailgames.kayako.com

The ScotRail Class 68 update will be approximately 70 MB in size.

Runs just as poorly as it did when it was branded as "2016"... don't waste your money.

It’s really sad that the only fleshed out Train Simulator on PC these days is this poor excuse of a videogame.

I won’t even speak much of the thousands of dollars’ worth of DLCs - some of which are little more than a badly made 3d model being sold for a full game price. There are plenty of other reviews that cover that.

It started out fun. I enjoyed it enough to invest in some extra content (the route bundles are the least overpriced). Then I made the "mistake" of upgrading my computer.

This game, which is called Train Simulator 2016 is almost unplayable on a 2016 computer, thanks to frequent crashes, consistently low framerates, ugly visuals, and FPS drops that are almost rhythmic with the movement and sound of the train.

I tinkered with the settings, between highest and lowest. It made no difference.

I emailed the developer. They replied after a massive delay, "but it runs perfectly on our much weaker computer!", and promptly closed the issue within days before I could get a chance to respond.

I asked the community for advice. They tried to convince me that it was most unreasonable of me to expect this 2016 release to run on my 2016 computer. Or how my set-up is "unbalanced" or "not good enough" despite running every other game flawlessly. Some referred to their real-life experience of driving trains, and how that has made their opinions on computer hardware and software paramount. But credit where its due - most of their passive-aggressive sermons began with hello and ended with thank you.

For people who have spent hundreds and thousands of dollars in this game, and are now unable to enjoy them, the dev's solution is to release a new game engine, which of course, will NOT support said hundreds and thousands worth of content. Meanwhile, they keep repackaging this broken software as a "new release" every year, and keep selling a thousand dollars more of DLCs, WITHOUT any warnings to buyers about the horrible expected performance, and without any commitment to give players their money's worth.

If you are still living in the last century, you might love this. Everyone else, (and I wish I could suggest a better alternative) wait for the new game engine next year.

TS2017 is a mixed bag of beans
While chugging along in a train can be relaxing and surprisingly fun, this game is also a source of aggravation. As example I think I have a decent computer: GTX 970, AMD A10-6700 quad Core, 8 Gbyte Ram, Windows 10 AE. I can play games like World of Warcraft and Elite Dangerous on highest settings without problems and decent frame rates.
In TS 2017 my framerate can drop down as low 6 fps in certain scenarios. I might get 20 fps if I am lucky and reduce all settings to low.
Switching from Windowed borderless to fullscreen in the settings would cause it to no longer start.
That's for the technical things.
For gameplay I have these complaints:
The career mode is too strict:
Driving your train at 101kph instead of 100kph? You lose points. One minute too late at the station? Kiss ANY points you might have accrued goodbye.

Also DLCs are extremely expensive.

Would I recommend this game? If it's for sale under $10, yes.
Full price? No.

This developer does not support its game. It's rife with bugs and issues that get neglected in favor of churning out new content. It's not clean, it's not polished, it's just not good. Lack of competition has these devs laughing to the bank.

Dovetail Fail The Most Basic of QA Tests for the 6th Year Running...Perfect Record Continues
So,

I buy the update to 2017 for the 5 DLC and I, at random, pick the first Career Scenario of the New Jersey Coast Line....

Imagine my total lack of surprise that the scenario has obvious flaws in it.....you really have an amzing ability to produce your output at a totally consistent level; everything you make looks like you don't know what the words test, qualiy, assurance, and many more, are.

This first scenario of NJ does not give you the eta in the HUD, there is a point just over three miles out where a 45mph speed limit is enforced that is NOT on the hud's route - it just doesn't exist as anything the player can see.

I assume you will be bringing your unparalleled lack of testing and QA to your new product, so come December I look forward to a new product developed in a couldn't be bothered, half complete way.......

Nearly £3.5K worth of DLC (~280 items), the majority of which hasn't been updated since release. I don't know how that's even remotely acceptable.

OK, with 569 hours:

1. This is a marvelous game. It simulates not just driving trains, but the experience of being in them, around them, and the countryside through which they roar in all four seasons. Some look and sound so good you can almost smell the deisel. Stop at a station along the way - get out and have a cucumber sandwich and a cup of tea from your thermos.

2. Don't be put off by the DLCs. This is a train enthusiast's game; a hobby. Like a train set in your attic. If you want a new loco, buy it. Add it with pride as a new thing for your collection; it's not like a patch for a broken game. Buy a train because you like it, you want it - to look at, and learn about, and drive, and watch and hear rushing by. And if you want a route, buy it to EXPERIENCE it; spend time on it.

3. The experience can range from excitement of a high speed run, to a peaceful, even cathartic experience chuffing through hills and dales and towns and cities which so well represent the lands portrayed.

I cannot recommend this game more highly.

The reason i picked up this game was because in my steam collection i have every different type of genre except for a train simulator.

This is not by any means perfect but it does run stable during game but not when exiting a game or trying to create a new type of train loadout.

i like this game alot even with the issues and i do recommend this game for any one who wants to build a digital hobby.

Been using this for route buiding since EA / Rail simulator Days (about 8 years). This by far the easiest set of route construction tools out there. Gave up on the competition at least 6 years ago, as their route editors were too obscure / unexpected results. Recommend Train Simulator (TS2017 at the time of writing) for route building alone.

There are also helpful Train Simulator communities out there and are of good use if you have a route related query. A high specification machine over the required (TS2017) specification is an advantage. Required PC hardware quoted, is on the low size for major route building activities

Been only interested in the route building side of things; cannot pass opinion on Carrer scenarios for example.

So there is a lot of bad reviews on this game, I want to shed some light on it here.

First, yes there is a lot of dlc, and it is a little pricey, but if you really think about how many people play this game and how much money they need in funding to make more maps, because If you play the game with the graphics on the highest setting like I do, you can really see how much time they put into it, and on top of that I live in Chicago and the Racetrack Route is scary accurate to how it is in real life, so give them a break on that.

Seccond, I wanna talk about frame rate and lag, I used to run into problems with that on a older computer but I have no clue what these people on here are talking about when they say they have high end computers and they get bad frame rates,
My setup is a 4GB Nvida graphics card, Intel I7 4770K quad core 4.3GHZ 10Gb ram

and I run the game on highest graphics settings and I get a nice 50fps the whole time. This game wants intel and Nvida equitment only because my friends AMD stuff makes the game laggy, and the you honestly need a fast processer.

Third, with the graphics turned all the way up this game is amazing to look at. The scenery is so dense and the besides the grass everything looks amazing. They offer a lot of things to do in the game in the career mode, but my favorite part about this game is the fact that there is a build mode, where I can run any train with any locomtives I want.

Overall the game is amazing and I cant wait for the release of TS world, but I have put 200hrs into this game over the last month and I will continue. Very Recommended

Without a doubt, the most singular waste of a game in existance. A total waste of the purchase price and the space it takes up on your hard drive. If you ever get the feeling you want to purchase this game, lay down til that feeling goes away.

Gameplay is both annoying and frustrating. Annoying because of the poor frame rates, frustrating because of the limited play offered by the small number of scenarios. DLC is limited, heavily overpriced, and most hasn't been updated since it was releases.

All-in-all, not a very satisfying gaming experience.
