Deathstate Update 1.20

Lessons of the Grand Grimoire

Deathstate 1.20 is now LIVE! Thank you to everyone who assisted with the beta testing.

Major Features:
  • Magic system revamped.
  • Redesigned many Relics to be more interesting and effective.
  • Greatly improved Laser and Mortar weapons.
  • Overall balance tweaks with the goal of increasing the number of viable builds at higher difficulty levels.
  • Added 2 new unique enemies and several new items.
  • Added a new beneficial potion.
  • Magic Globe pickups will now drop from enemies.

Minor Features:
  • Fixed text blurriness caused by filters. Text should always be crisp now.
  • Corners should be a bit less sticky when moving your character.
  • Standing over an organ or item now displays its name.
  • Reduced the intensity of some screen overlay effects.
  • Added Large health globes that drop rarely.
  • Merchants appear more frequently.
  • Several inhabitants of the final world have new Desecration abilities. Watch out!
  • Insanity Emissaries are now more... interesting.
  • Added new possible map layouts to most worlds.

Tweaks and Bug Fixes:
  • Nerfed Reverse Damage effects. They now stop healing after X heals, and only heal 1 tick per impact instead of being full damage mirror.
  • Most "Slow Fire" effects (including the Aggravating Brain) now cause your bullets to pierce 3 enemies.
  • Lasers have better stacking with many organs and weapons.
  • Fixed various rendering bugs with lasers.
  • All weapons now benefit The Eye character, even lasers.
  • Reduced the Eye's base damage stat because lasers are much more powerful now (the Eye's actual damage output was not reduced).
  • The Embalmer can make good use of mortar weapons now.
  • The Eye and The Embalmer have new activated abilities.
  • Ice weapon slow and freeze effects occur more often.
  • Bubble damage is now improved by Ice Boost stat.
  • Forges and Altars now continue to appear even after their unlocks are earned. They will drop random weapons and organs respectively.
  • Fixed circumstances that could cause Forges or Altars to not appear or become exceptionally rare.
  • Improved the damage scaling on Entropy DoTs.
  • Made confusion heart particles on the player more apparent.
  • Gambling Merchants now have a cap on how much they can charge.
  • Nerfed Otylosh the Fleshbeast and Amon Morax the Demon on Desecration 2+
  • Slightly increased the world time limit on Maze of Ix, Carcassus and Grave of Time.
  • Slightly increased the world time limit on Desecration 1 and above.
  • Slightly REDUCED the world time limit on the final world.
  • Slightly nerfed several enemies in the Temple of Qit on Desecration 0 to make the difficulty more in-line with the Fortress of Torment for new players.
  • Yellowed Eel Guts have new stats.
  • You can now dismiss messages more quickly (such as item stat popups).
  • You must now press a specific key to skip cutscenes, instead of Any Key. Maybe you won’t accidentally skip half of the cutscenes anymore!
  • Fixed a bug that caused the player to sometimes dodge right instead of the intended dodge direction.
  • Fixed a bug that caused the confusion debuff to apply even if you dodge through a succubus heart bullet.
  • Fixed a bug where Insanity progress unlocks did not always unlock. This should work retroactively.
  • Fixed a bug where Prince Ziggur would not unlock in the bestiary. This is not retroactive.
  • Fixed a display bug that caused the player to flicker between poses sometimes when firing.
  • Fixed some issues with music sometimes stopping/starting/changing unpredictably after bosses die.
  • Fixed the level music volume increasing after desecrating.
  • Fixed an issue where lazy Grimoires would take too long to pick new targets when the player has a slowed fire rate.
  • Fixed "best win speed" stat sometimes resetting.
  • Once you’ve played insanity or desecrated a few times, the “warning” messages will cease to appear. You know what you’ve done!
  • You can no longer pick up items while dying. Because you're dying.
  • Added Zeralith to the credits for seriously exceptional Community QA work.
  • Tentatively fixed Xbox One controller issues.
  • Many other bug fixes based on Community bug reports. Thank you!

Magic Revamp Details:
  • MP no longer regenerates passively, it only regenerates when you deal damage. The regeneration rate scales with damage dealt.
    * Cooldowns on most abilities and relics greatly reduced. As long as you have the MP, you can usually use them again within seconds. This makes high-MP builds much more interesting.
  • The MP Regen stat is much more effective.
  • All organs granting Max MP and MP Regen stats were improved.
  • Organs that previously reduced Max MP now reduce MP Regen instead. It's no longer possible for your abilities to become unusable.

The developer of this game added mouse control just for me, and other people like me with physical disabilities.

10/10, would get killed in this game again.

And again.

I've only played a few runs so far, so I haven't unlocked everything yet.
Pros:

+ great pixel-art
+ challenging enemies
+ different way of fighting ( You attack the nearest enemy automaticly and need to dogde the bullets)
+ many unlocks [Items, weapons, books, etc.]
+ many characters to unlock (Each of them plays differently)
+ many different enemies
+ many different bosses to fight
+different areas to explore. (You'll always need to fight through 4 stages with 3 levels + boss level each)
+ bosses are fair and have unique patterns.
+ champion-enemies with different attacks
+ lovecraftian (might be a con for someone, but I love it)
+ great atmosphere
+ unlocks add new gameplay-mechanics [to example: giant chests, where you need to kill monsters before they open up, which bring massive loot]
+ Rogue-like (perma-death, random levels, etc)
+ customizable key-bindings

Cons:

-Nothing so far.

For 15€, you can't do anything wrong here.

A fun, challenging and compelling rogue-shmup that revels in its Lovecraftian inspirations and is recieving a fantastic amount of post-release support from the devs.

This game is a really fun mix of bullet hell and roguelike that feels a lot like wandering through a dream. You attack automatically, so everything is all about positioning and enemy management, and this combined with the floating movement just puts you into a really cool state of mind. Combine this with the heavy Lovecraft (and D&D) themes and you get a game that just oozes charm and sweats fun.

Lovely game, something to distract me from The Binding Of Isaac ;), how good is it to cure an addiction with another one ;). enjoying it a lot, my hours count is huge because I just leave it on and make run when not working.

Great rogue-like with a ton of variety. The single stick shooting aspect is really fun because you can focus more on avoidance. The sheer amount of content for the price is what really has me impressed. Its nice to see a developer that cares.

I like this game a lot!

Things start out kinda simple but you unlock new stuff by playing and it gets crazy after a while. It definitely has that "just one more run" thing going on. It'll keep you up late.

All the playable characters are my favorite part of the game. They all play VERY differently from each other and it adds a lot.

Hardmode (called Desecration) seems impossible to me... so that's either a pro or a con depending on how good you are at shooters. It gets hard as hell if that's you're thing.

Overall if you're an ARPG / Shooter / Roguelike fan this is a winner. Recommended!

Deathstate is very interesting sort of game, if you're a fan of roguelight games like binding of isaac you'll likely enjoy this game. I'll be updating this review as I accumulate times but here are some first thoughts

Pro's/Con's
+Smooth gameplay (I have a fairly decent machine but i have had 0 frame drops while playing it, streaming and watching another stream at the same time)
+dynamic runs (think binding of isaac where every run feels slightly different)
+Diverse Characters (all but 2 of the characters feel very different and have different builds that lend to the characters starting stats and default ability)
+Controller support (they improved the controller functionality a fair amount in the most recent patch)
+Difficult Gameplay (game scales well and has difficult conent, desecration 3 is stupidly hard and it took me about 25 hours of actual gameplay to get my first clear with a stupidly lucky run)
-Dashing seems a bit strange and disadvantagous for controller (would be nice if there was a dash button that would just dash the direction you're facing)
-Limited end act bosses (NEW BOSSES HAVE BEEN ADDED!)
-Mana/manaregen stat's seem incredibly underwhelming for how many items have them (max mana occasionally is important on expensive mana items due to -mana items leaving you with not enough to cast the spells)
-Level balance seems slightly off (world 3 is a good bit easier than world 4 and I personally think world 2 is more difficult than 4 as well but that's probably just personal bias)

In my opinion this game is definitly worth buying and if the developers keep up with it I could see easily sinking 100+ hours into it.

This is such a weird game. The term "single stick" threw me off so hard at first. But let me tell you something; if you play for a while (say, an hour or so) you'll forget you're not in control of the firing. That's because in a way, you are in control. Your positioning relative to priority targets is crucial to your success in this game.

I absolutely love this game. The visuals, the smooth gameplay, the music (dear god the music sounds like it was ripped straight from a Sega Genesis game, i.e. AWESOME), everything about this game was clearly made with so much love. And it gets HARD.

If you can look past the term single stick, this game is a lovingly made roguelite with all the right pieces. There is one downside for me, and that's that there are a few items that are clearly strictly better than other items, but other than that I don't have any complaints. Would highly recommend!

A Bullet hell of sorts with a lovecraftian theme.
Its binding of issac with a tower defense like mechanic where you dont choose your target as you zip through the mountain of madness

Not your average directional bullet hell, this game oozes its thoughtful theme. focusing on movement the game takes on a different mechanic. Think of youreself as an automated turret you just manuever yourself directionally and with a shadow step dash, You choose your character. Each character has its own traits and abilities. With loads of unlockables this game earns a special place in my heart.

For Macbook Users Only:

Deathstate is a wonderful game. It's fun to play and visually evocative. The Dev team obviously worked really hard to create a very enjoyable experience. However, I cannot recommend this game for macbook users. I logged roughly 27 hours in Deathstate several months ago but then stopped playing for a while. I returned recently to see how the various updates had effected the game and found it to be even better than before. I played several games and then exited. When I tried to open the game again I was greeted with sound but no visuals, just a black screen. I looked on the forums and it seems that I am not the only one having this issue. The Devs have stated that they do not know how/ are unable to fix this issue. I feel really bad posting a negative review for a game I have enjoyed for almost thirty hours and would love to play more of. However, as of now, it looks like I will not be able to play Deathstate ever again on this computer and any Macbook user who purchases this game is likely to run into the same issue. If the dev team finds a way to fix this issue I would be delighted to change this review to a thumbs up but that doesn't look like its going to happen. I'm not angry Deathstate, I'm just dissapointed :'(

A very unkown roguelike, but one certainly worth the price. A few unlocks are oddly rare, but you'll find them soon enough. The game has four difficulty levels (5, kinda), and trust me, it gets hellish, but the early levels are easy enough for less experienced players. Very fun, and certainly worth the price. Like Isaac mixed with Nuclear Throne with a lot of sparkle and polish put in.

This game gets as close to Binding of Isaac as possible. I loved BoI because of the sheer amount of playstyles deriving from the hundreds of items you can collect. Deathstate does a great job in making me replay it again and again thanks to a big amount of "gamechanging" items, too. I think it should be even more "experimental" and random, still I think it's a great game as it is!

Yes, it's another top-down arena shooter with roguelike elements like Binding of Isaac and Nuclear Throne. But Deathstate has one aspect that it does better than alot of roguelikes. Discovery. Because all the organs don't show off their effects visually (like how Polyphemus showed how you would have one giant eye, so obviously it would be a damage up), you never quite know what each organ will do until you pick it up, and this makes unlocking and picking up new items a whole bunch more fun.

In general:
Pros:

+Unique visual theme, semi-lovecraftian
+Dozens of items to unlock and find
+Easy to play and understand, but difficult to beat
+Sick soundtrack

Cons:

-Lacks some replayability, would like unlockable extra floors
-The visuals can be pretty overwhelming at times

Basically I love this game and I want moar. MOAR.

Deathstate is a good idea, but suffers from being a bit too relient on it's insperations-nothing feels new, despite the interesting mechanic of power-up via stuffing yourself with alien organs. Not the worst, but never does anything that great either. Getting a ton of lasers and not needing to aim is pretty satisfying, though.

But the lasers are actually another problem with Deathstate: there is no balence. Some items are practically required, and others are completely worthless. Every run feels more or less the same with different characters because you'll be hunting for the same items. There's no diversity, and no real challenge. Doing good or bad depends entirely on what items you get. That's just not fun.

Hard mode feels impossible to get past even a single stage. Stonewalls repeat play, but maybe that's for the best.

I don't recommend this game on Mac. It doesn't work, I get a blackscreen while starting the game hearing the music, but can't play.

There's no bug report on that and no way of playing; I paid for nothing.
