Night Environment: New York out now for FSX: Steam Edition

http://store.steampowered.com/app/494527

Night Environment: New York for FSX: Steam Edition revolutionizes your VFR night flying experience. Using a series of databases, this add-on implements authentic and immersive lighting to different road types and other areas. Thousands of lights clearly illuminate highways that connect cities and smaller roads which link neighbourhoods.

The Night Environment database contains more road data than default FSX: Steam Edition, so roads you may not see during the day become visible at night. All lights are visible for up to 60 miles, for a more immersive experience. All highway lights are raised above the surface and have a lit bitmap below them, giving them a 3D feel.

Night Environment: New York also comes with a configuration tool so you can customize the intensity of your night flying experience.

PLEASE NOTE

Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition (FSX: Steam Edition) is functionally similar to the boxed version of Microsoft Flight Simulator X (MSFSX). We have worked extensively with third party developers to make sure the two products can work alongside each other, however due to the wide range of add-on products available for MSFSX, we cannot guarantee that your existing content will work with Microsoft Flight Simulator X Steam Edition.

The Flight Simulator X Software Development Kit (SDK) is not included with FSX: Steam Edition.

If you already have MSFSX installed on your PC and are concerned about running the two games alongside each other, you may wish to consider installing FSX: Steam Edition on a separate PC.

If you already have MSFSX and add-ons installed they will only be accessible through your existing installation. They will not be duplicated across the original edition and Steam Edition of the simulator.

Polishes some of the game breaking issues that were in the boxed edition and runs in steam. Multiplayer now works again. Great fun for a casual simmer but if you're serious about being a pilot I recommend P3D.

As you can tell by my hours played it is pretty good but the default aircraft are bad, so buy either the Aerooft Airbus X Extended or the PMDG 737NGX or 777.

This is one of the best Flight Simulators. I used it first in 2010 and was fascinated by it's technical level of detail. You can change difficulty (realism settings) as soon as you learn to fly. On most difficult level you have to obey speed limits when retracting the gear or extending the flaps... Anyway, in 2013 I made my real pilot license and a lot of experience learned in FSX helped me to feel more comfortable in my real training flights. Things you can learn here are: purpose of different switches and gauges, terrain and radio navigation, communication basics, ATIS & METAR (weather reports). Things you should not think, they are the same (even with best realizm settings) - it is flying physics. Yes, it is very close, but not identical, but it is easy to learn, when you decide to get into real place.
Cessna 172 with round instruments and version with Garmin 1000 is best plane to learn basics, for future real pilots.
Also I advise to get the book "Microsoft Flight Simulator X For Pilots: Real World Training".

Flew a GPS led navigation for a fairly short flight from Heathrow (EGLL) to Malaga (LEMG).

Whole flight goes off without a hitch. GPS points were plotted in, so I got in on course and just observed the route for most of the flight.

Begiin my descent to Malaga, still fine, all the way through my descent towards to APP glideslope.

As I go to hook the glideslope, I take control back to my yoke, deciding to fly it in manually.

Extend the flaps, disengage the FD and AP Master... Game crash.

Great flight sim. But don't get too heavily invested in to your flights, as the game can straight up crash with no warning.

Very good product with many add-ons but after having to reload after Windows 10 crash, it seems to be unstable and shuts down for different reasons so hope it is due to the windows upgrade not my computer

I love this game, it runs better than X-Plane 10, because I have a bad computer. The scenery is good, just that now, you're better off waiting for the new Flight Simulator releasing in 2016. If you want to play a Flight Sim really badly, go for it. If yo can wait, wait.

It's a good simulator, a tad dated but there is essentially infinite content to create a better world. Default is fun, interesting, and you can see parts of the world - however it's not entirely realistic. Some of the larger cities have more details but if you make a lot of road trips or spend out time in the country you'll quickly realize that there's not a lot of realism near ground level. I prefer to fly low following roads, rivers, streams, canyons and it always amazes me when I see a house in the middle of an interstate or houses lining runways at smaller airports next to terminal buildings and hangars. I'm not complaining too much because the game is dated but the fact that it's still in use by so many and new content is always appearing shows that there is a lot of love for this sim. You will probably spend days or weeks searching through free content and you could easily spend hundreds or thousands of dollars for paid content. Personally, I don't want to spend too much to make it better I would rather wait for a newer sim with better/modern coding and better graphics out-of-the-box. I think Dovetail is going to be delivering something soon or perhaps I would look into P3D or X-plane.

This is still a great sim though and is usually on sale throughout the year for a low price. If you fly high or do standard traffic routes you may not care about the up-close ground level details, but if you prefer to fly under 500ft you're going to notice a lot of goofs and glitches with the world. There are mods and DLC packs that can correct and modernize and make things more realistic, but again it's going to take or money or both and the game is around ten years old or so.

I love the amount of content though, sadly a lot of the freeware aircraft out there are still optimized only for DX9 and I don't like having to turn my graphics down to enjoy games or simulators so I've wasted many hours, probably days or maybe even a week or two downloading and trying to use aircraft only to delete them after being forced to cut my graphics and performance backwards. I recommend it, it's great for beginners or advanced flight sim fans but just like any other simulator or hobby it can become quite pricey depending on what you want to fly, where you want to go, what you want to see, and how much detail and realism you want to experience. There are plenty of stores that offer content and they have plenty of sales throughout the year as well. Be warned though, more realism you want the more you will spend - but even going baseline or buying one of the packages on a Steam sale you'll get plenty hours of this. After-all there have been sim pilots flying this for over ten years...

Even taking the age into account I would give it 7 or 8 out of ten, fly high and it looks good enough, fly low and you'll need to make it look better. I'm not talking about 4k textures or over-detailed roads or anything but I tried following a couple familiar interstates and highways and found very little realism - even some smaller cities and towns the layout just appears completely randomized. I found a spot on I10 where the interstate twisted around a random house - I've seen HP cars sitting in the medians before but never houses. So take that how you will, good simulator, good out of the box, great with pricey add-ons like ORBX.

*You can get a lot of free trial-ware add-ons for scenery but most of the trial aircraft are so limited it's not worth it. Yay I can throttle up and throttle down and look at it in chase plane but can't lift off or turn! If you go with add-ons I would suggest flying a specific path in stock version, load the add-on - I love the Pacific Northwest trial from ORBX - fly the exact same path to see the new level of detail. Stock version you may see power line towers, with a good add-on package you can actually follow the power lines visually, or follow actual roads.

I have not tried any of the "Photo-real" packages though but I'm tempted - however P3D and X-plane are also trying to tempt me these days. 64bit optimized versus adding onto 32bit...

FSX is good though, just make sure you have plenty of hard drive space and some extra spending money to make it better for you.
