Male Characters - Worlds Adrift Blog Post

Hey Drifters,

Jack here to talk to you about our elusive male characters. It's taken a while but they are finally in-game, and while there are still a few kinks in the animations that need ironing out, they're well on their way to being the equal of their female counterparts.

A young engineer poses in front of an ancient statue he's discovered

At the moment all these characters have the same young-looking face, but we plan to have plenty of variants to choose from when the game releases.

As stated before, all of the clothing pieces are interchangeable between gender and so I have been busy going through all of the clothing pieces and creating the male counterparts for each one. One thing that became obvious early on in this process was that since I had designed most of the clothing pieces with the female in mind a direct translation often didn't work. With this in mind I began designing clothes for the male character, and found that these translated much better to the female character. We now have a good selection of male and female oriented clothes which are wearable by either gender with minor differences to cater for differences in body shape.

Here are a handful of said clothing pieces being modelled by the male character.

That's all for now.
Thanks for reading!

Jack

Worlds Adrift Weekly Round-up - 3rd - 7th October 2016

Hey there everyone.

How are you doing? It's Friday, so for at least SOME of you, it's chill time, or almost chill time. If that doesn't include you, worry not. Yours will come soon. Believe it.

First up, Jack has been finishing up the MALE CHARACTERS - he's written about that in this week's blog post. Check it out, and make sure you let us know what you think.

Next up...there is this YouTube playlist, showing you some of the amazing things you've made in the Island Creator so far.

Speaking of that....here are some of the amazing creations that RitchieJ has made.

You can check them all out in the Island Creator Steam Workshop, right here. By check them out, we mean run, swing, play....

...and just for fun (we won't put this one in the game, we promise, no matter how much we like breakfast)!

We didn't want to leave you without sharing a little something that made us laugh this week - a little out-of-control hair, from the QA team. Don't you just HATE it when that happens?

Have a great weekend, and we'll see you all next week.

Love and kisses,

The Worlds Adrift Team

I'd like to explain how great this is with a little scenario.

My first island took 5 hours to making my first island and when I had finished I uploaded it and closed the tool. Turns out it was now 2 o'clock in the morning...and I still wanted to make another!

If you want to contribute to a great game, with a really fun tool that will eat up your life then download this, it's free, it's fun and it's bloody fantastic!

Do I recommend this? Absolutely!

I really shouldn't reccomend this game. After all, it suffers from:
- Very poor handling of the engine it chose.
- Wildly inconsistent framerate.
- Shaky and clunky control scheme.
- Animations that are, quite frankly, ♥♥♥♥ poor.
- Very, very few customization options for your island when it's all said and done.
- Not to be harsh, but art deriction that has little to no interest in creating a unique style or being even pleasant to look at. Although that is hugely subjective.

However, I'm going against my better judgement.
- Firstly, it's free. The final game won't be, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.
- Secondly, it's a free creative outlet. You don't see these specific types of level editors everywhere, unless you want to learn how to program. It may be bare-bones, but considering the market isn't exactly brimming with 3D explorative level editors, I'll reluctantly give it a pass.
- And the most important. Even though the final game (If I had to take an educated guess) will probably not be worth buying, it's a cool experiment. What's even cooler is being part of the experiment. Making levels that could be in a fully-partly functional retail game is kind of exhilierating. Especially seeing what other members of the community came up with. Though my levels are sure as hell not going to be featured in the final product, I still feel like I'm apart of something.

So if you're cheap and want a small-scale way to express some creativity (or just want to see what other people came up with) give this game a try. After all, all you have to lose is time.

It's not very often you see something like a level editor being made available as a free download; In the current age of gaming, you'd have to shell out a ton of money just to get something like that, and even then it may not contain everything it should have. Seeing a free to use level design tool with workshop support AND the possibility of seeing your creation in the final game is pretty refreshing in my opinion. Sadly, my computer isn't capable of running it due to the fact that it renders the in game graphics, and reducing them does very little. However, that in no way is a fault on the game, but more a fault on me not having the proper hardware. Everything else about this editor as far as I've seen is pretty darn good, and can lead to a lot of possibilities. Just take a look at the Workshop for this editor and you can find pages and pages of beatiful looking environments just itching to be explored. I highly recommend this to any rookie level designer looking for something to start with.

Create badass floating island worlds with a toysRus version of zbrush, materials, dozens of models. Then upload and maybe it goes into Worlds Adrift, the Game™.

Some perf issues even on my moderately beastly machine.

I'd like some more standard editing tools as well. Duplicate, additional axes on the gizmos. The bases are covered, just want more advanced. I love that everything is painted on using brushes, and can then be edited individually. It supports the organic feel of the world.

The tech behind this game looks terrific (improbable.io). Bossa is sick. The use of Steam Workshop is great. This is a great opportunity for building content in a game, and if you don't care about that it's zen-like experience if you just want to chill and paint islands in the sky.

Why can't Unreal and Unity come with Zen music?

Nowhere else can you spend a few hours creating a unique world that could be a permanent part of an MMO sandbox universe for anyone to come across and explore. Amazingly good tool for creating any kind of world you can imagine with very intuitive options and controls so even someone without any 3d modeling experience can pick it up quickly.

For anyone with 3d modeling experience you'll find this tool is actually quite powerful. Whether you want to work quickly or spend 50 hours on one island, the Island Creator can handle hundreds of assets with ease and gives you numerous customization options, sliders, and shortcuts to quickly build or endlessly detail your dream worlds.

In addition, the developer team Bossa Studios is very transparent with the development process, always with an eye and ear to the community's islands and feedback.

The idea of the game sounds awesome and i like that the community gets the chance to contribute. The Island Creator itself needs some improvements. While placing the initial shapes it is a bit hard to determine where everything is in three dimensional space. I must admit that i was also missing water a lot. (Please add water :)) Apart from that it makes a fine Island Creator.

Whether you actually use this tool to make your own interesting islands is one thing. You can always just download from the Steam Workshop other players creations and explore. Set to in game tranquil music, exploring the varied floating worlds of other players is relaxing. You'll have fun acting like Tarzan, with your own easily deployable grapping line, swinging between different parts of a floating island. But I do recommend the creation tool once you sample all the creative things you could do with it.

I have been looking at this game with passing interest for some time now, and only happened to notice this island creator had showed up on the workshop. It was free, so I decided to try it out. Normally I'm not a very artistic type, but I found that just playing with some of the tools actually allowed me to make some interesting, dare I say pleasant landscapes without much effort at all from mass-placement and -texture tools. And given all of the other more precise options, I can see this being a very powerful tool to others to make some really neat locales. The idea that players could make these to be in the final game is a really incredible idea, so if you're following this game, you really should try it out in my opinion.

Additionally, with the option to try out your islands as a player, it makes this a really neat insight into some of the early mechanics of the game. For once, the grappling rope actually impacts obstacles, and overall the physics seem to be building toward a fun game. (Side Note - you CAN reel in the grappling hook with the SHIFT key, took be a bit to figure that out.)

Overall, this is a really fun, free tool with a lot of impications for players, and should definitely be checked out if you're interested in this game. In my opinion, this free demo shows a lot of promise for the game as a whole, and definitely piqued my interest in it that much more.
