Fantastic Batari Cosplay and interview

The Far Cry community team was amazed when they spotted this awesome Batari cosplay. We reached out to its creator to ask her some questions and pick her nerdy brain.

Hi there, can you present yourself to the Far Cry community?

Hi! I'm Scarlett from Scarlett Costuming and Art (FB link), but my real name is Emilie.
I'm a Danish cosplayer and biologist in the making. I'm currently writing my Master's thesis on ancient DNA from humans from the Ice Age, and that might be why I fell in love with Far Cry Primal – as a scientist I'm very interested in ancient people and their way of life, so when I saw that Far Cry Primal was a thing, I added it straight to my games list. I watched my brother play Far Cry 3, but I only just joined the Far Cry ranks when I got into Far Cry Primal.

That’s pretty unique! And what about your cosplaying skills?

I have been cosplaying for two years! I'm still quite new in the cosplay community and I'm still learning with every costume, but I love it. It's such a creative hobby and I love to create wearable art – it's the best! I also love being on stage and performing, and I have represented Denmark at EuroCosplay in London, which was an amazing experience! I could go on and on about cosplay as a hobby, it's so much fun. I have been attending contests for as long as I have been cosplaying, and just recently I won first at Dreamhack Summer 2016 in Sweden (picture credits: Danarki).

Wow, congratulations! How was your experience of these competitions?

Thank you! I wore Amiri of the Six Bears from Pathfinder for the finals at EuroCosplay 2015, and I have had such a great reaction from fans of Pathfinder. I play Dungeons & Dragons myself, so it was so cool to actually make one of the iconic characters in real life. Only a few people have recognized the cosplay, but some did when I wore her at Dreamhack Winter 2015 and won second place. I love bonding over a character like that when meeting fans of the franchise! (I have attached two pictures of Amiri, if you want to see that, too! It's the barbarian lady.)
I wore the Empress of Bones from Asura Online for the competition at Dreamhack Summer 2016, and the judges were so nice at the pre-judging. I wasn't able to wear the bone wings at the pre-judging, but I wore them on stage for my small performance, and they said they loved it, so I couldn't be happier about it. :) It's a tough costume to wear, but so worth it!

Ok, that’s pretty impressive. But why Batari?

I chose Batari because of her fierceness and her amazing design. I have always loved big headdresses, and when I saw her in game, my initial reaction was "gotta cosplay her." Then I saw she wasn't wearing a top and I knew I had to tweak the design a bit. ;) She's a tough and cold-hearted woman, but I really love how she doesn't bow down to anyone and that she's a very strong woman. She's got her priorities a bit mixed up and she rules with an iron fist, but hey, we can all have a bad day.

In short: she's a very well-written character and she looks so majestic and imposing that I couldn't resist. I usually gravitate towards dark and strong characters.

And how long did it take you to get the final version of the costume?

I finished the cosplay in six days. I made the decision quite late before the deadline, so I had to work on the cosplay a lot, but I didn't mind. I was trying out new materials and techniques, and I really love how it turned out, so I had fun!

What were the most difficult parts?

The headdress and the wig were quite challenging. I'm a blonde and I needed to make sure the dreads would cover my hair and not break the illusion. So I made a fake hairline of dreads I back-combed myself. The biggest issue ended up being the sheer weight of the headdress and dreads since everything had to stay on my head by itself. I solved this with multiple hairclips (ow!) and elastic bands. I also glued down the hairline with some prosthetic skin glue to make sure it didn't slide back.

What material did you use for it?

The headdress is made from beach mats! I bought some very cheap ones and painted liquid latex and glue on one side to make sure the woven straw didn't simply fall apart when I cut them into strips. Then I "braided" the strips of straw into the texture from the game (I used a lot of screenshots from the game and the concept art to make sure I replicated everything as closely as possible to the source material) and glued it onto a base I made from thermoplastic. Later I wove string onto the back part of the headdress and weathered the whole thing. I did the same for the bracers and shin guards. The rest of the costume was leather I had lying around from previous cosplays.

Do you have any advice for other Far Cry fans who’d like to start their own cosplay?

These kinds of cosplays are amazing to craft! You don't need to be precise and have a perfect technique or perfect craftsmanship; the materials are all natural, and everything is rugged and dirty. It's really interesting to create something new that has to look old – so my advice would be to weather everything thoroughly to make it appear old. It's all about creative solutions like using coffee or tea to make leathers look old and stained, or using a wash of acrylics to make the straw look a bit dirty and worn by time. Weathering is everything in cosplays like these. :)

What did you think about the Wenja language that we used for the game?

I loved the Wenja language! Very guttural and primal: it seems very plausible for it to sound like that! I would not be very qualified to comment on the correctness, though. ;) I work with extracting ancient DNA from petrous bones (ear bones) and mapping the genes of the people in the population. Super interesting and very nerdy!

Would you like to share anything else about this project or the game?

Keep making games like these, lol. It makes my nerdy scientist heart happy.

Fantastic and beautiful. There will be many negative reviews saying "boooring" but remember that this is a game about cavemen, in a proto-language, so complicated politics and in-depth story is just not possible and shouldn't be expected. Given this, Ubisoft made amazing use of personality of NPCs combined with amazing landscapes and animals. This is not a game for CoD-kids, it's for someone who appreciates the beauty of nature and fauna and who has an interest in neanderthalic history. Great NPCs, an emotional yet relatively simple story, and the best animal AI you've yet to experience.

it's awful
there's no good melee play because you can't block
the only thing you'll want to do is fire your bow at enemies

even on hard mode then if you're a decent shot the game is just super easy and as you only use the one weapon, super repetitive

it was a great idea and I've been looking forward to it since FC3 but they did it awfully.

would not recommend, waste of money

Gameplay is ok but repetitive with parts that are interesting, my biggest problem is with the uplay authentification crap and locking me out of playing if I forget my password which it seems to clear out after some updates.

Although not as engaging story wise as FC3 or even FC4, I enjoyed the game. When I could play it that is. The game crashes/freezes constantly, requiring a hard reset of my PC. Searching online shows that this is a common problem that affects users with all kinds of different hardware setups and that has no real solution provided by Ubisoft. This makes the game literally unplayable.

Easily my least favorite of all FC games. I REALLY wanted to like it, but by the end, It just felt repititous with a weak story line that dragged on.

A cautious reccomend. I'd if the setting is interesting to you, get this game on a sale. The idea of a prehistoric game has been approached many times, FC: Primal approach is a bit more grounded than you'll find in a survival game like Ark. You won't be stalking any tricerotops in this game, because well, that is more of fantasy than reality. The game isn't a hard shot for realism either, you will find a beavy of "far cry" powers similar to other games in the series. You will also take on a more beast master role, forming a relaitionship with wild animals which you tame and then can employ in your quest.
The main quest of the charecter is making a place for his people, the Wenja. The conflict comes not just from other wild animals but in primary antangonists the Udam, another tribe fighting for supremecy of a fertile valley known as Oros. The game does insert a moral level in that the Udam are cannibals which I guess is okay but I could have done without. Not that cannibalism is something I'd find out of place, but I don't think was needed as a motivation to fight the "bad" guys. Just fighting for resources and territory is enough motivation for me, and could have added a layer of complexity that's missing from the fairly straightforward narrative.

On the functional side you'll find the return of crafting, and harvesting of resources has been turned up to 11 vs FC3/4. You will be gathering lots of raw material. The game does grant some concessions in giving the option to remove search animations in this repatative task.

I liked this game because you have to craft weapons unlike previous far cry games. I also liked being able to tame beasts. The only thing that I didn't like was that there was no multiplayer or co-op because I really liked the multiplayer and co-op from far cry 4.

Really awesome game and the graphics, if your system can handle high/ultra at 2.5k or above settings, is amazing. It really does feel like you're in 10,000 BC. The large number of animals you can hut, tools to craft, and even ride animals like a Tiger while hunting is pretty awesome!

The missions are alright, typical Farcry games. I only play them to unlock weapons and crafts to have fun in free roam/hunting, which I think is the best part of this game.

Overall, worth the buy. 4.5 out of 5.

A few things I wish the game had that would make it 5/5:

Ability to built a fire anywhere. Cook meat. Have hunger/thurst bars. Chop down trees, make tents to sleep. That would make it truely a survival game and would complement the already great environment this game has.

i found my self looking for things more that anything i mean the game is really fun dont get me wrong but i mean like i hate how much i have to forage more than anything and i feel like alot of what i was doing was just rince and repeat and i dont look for that in a game i like to be able to have many things to do and i liked to hunt in this game but the things i wanted to hunt like rare deer was worth like nothing if they wanted to make it better they should have added and place to sell like somewhere in your village so that all the useless things you have in your bags arent so useless anymore and you can sell them but yea everything else in the game is real pretty but it just didnt suit my play style so i refunded my game and got my money back.

I have been a fan of the Far Cry series since the first game. This is one of, if not my favorite series of games ever. And THIS game is the absolute undisputed cream of the crop! Start with the fact that I have a 3-4 year old computer (that is still pretty solid) and this game hums on it. Seems incredibly well optimized. Once you get past that and to the story -- WOW!! This story is so rich and the action is varied and very interesting. I LOVE the control of animals via the beast master skills. One of the truly unique and extraordinarily cool functions of the game. The bosses (even the pre-endgame ones) are reasonably challenging and interesting. Being a completionist, I already have 77 hours in and havge only completed about 67% of the game. I have finished one of the two endgame boss fights and look forward to the next. But like most game sof this type there are hundreds of side missions and quests. I look forward to many more hours of exceptional game play in this game before wrapping it up. Buy it. You will not regret it! 10/10

I really must recommend this game! Very good graphics, ambience and sound interface as well as an enjoyable campaign. I cannot compare this game with the FC series since I started with this one, but I really liked it. The NPC's (people) each have their own characteristics and personalities which I think is well thought through and well done. The NPC's (animals) are realistic and awesome to hunt and tame. ( I especially like to shoot at prey, and wait for them to die while runnig away...:P)
The Map is GIGANTIC I have played for idk how many hours but still havn't seen HALF of the map, which is, if one might add, also very detailed and realistic!
I am having a problem though, that I can't save my progress anymore and every time I quit and restart I have to do the same main quest again, as if I never played. Right now idk how to fix that.
Other than that thumbs up and buy it if you like first-person survival and life in a world that is 10,000 years old ;)

An interesting experience, but unlike the other versions of Far Cry, not one you are going to be enthusiastic about repeating. Gameplay is decent, story is engaging, tamed animals are kinda cool, but it's not as engrossing as I had hoped. Wait for the price to go down to make it worth playing only once.

WOW! This is probably the best FPS ive played in my life.... or at least top 5. I thought using bow & arrow and spears would suck the fun out of an FPS, but boy, was I wrong. The storyline is great, even the caveman dialogue is well done. The animals are amzing... there is just nothing wrong with this game. Kudos!
