About This Game

Endless Sky is a 2D space trading and combat game inspired by the classic Escape Velocity series. Work your way up from a relatively wimpy shuttle, cargo ship, or fighter, to a highly upgraded and customized flagship or to a massive fleet of warships or freighters. Earn money by carrying passengers or cargo, escorting convoys, bounty hunting, or plundering and capturing enemy ships. Take sides in a civil war, or ignore the story line and just enjoy exploring the galaxy and blasting pirates.

The main story line takes about 8-16 hours to play through. The galaxy contains hundreds of star systems and planets, and several alien species with their own unique technologies. You can choose between more than fifty ships and several hundred ship upgrades. A plugin system allows anyone with a text editor and a paint program to create new ships, weapons, or missions, and the galaxy editor can be used to add new star systems and planets.

Endless Sky is free, open source, and cross platform (Windows, Mac, and Linux). Over time, the game universe will expand as contributors add new missions, story lines, alien species, places to explore, sound effects, and artwork.

For more information, please visit the website or read the player's manual.

Overview
For someone who doesn't want to read the whole review, here's a short version. The game is fun whilst being hard, but it's easy reloading makes it the fun hard rather than hard hard. There's so much customisation for your ship and fleet that you'll never want to stop trying to upgrade and there's the option to conquer the entire human race.

Recommend this game? Yes, because there's few games where it can be fun farming aliens, stealing their FTL Drives, Computers, Power Reactors, Cooling systems, and pretty much anything they have that you want. Or other things such as taking over the entire human race, meeting friendly aliens and then giving the warmongering members of their race Jump drives and profiting of off their raids, or building a fleet capable of destroying anything.

The game is astoundingly fun, but hard at the same times, see below for more on this. The controls are hard to master, I recommend you turn on auto-aiming before you even start the game, given than your going to be dog fighting other fighters at the start, and your hard-point lasers don't track targets. Once you get past the difficulty of the start and have your starting debt paid off, the game starts to get going, with player able to amass a massive fleet, if they can afford it. I personally took great fun in a smaller fleet equipped with the best equipment I could find. Buy a ship from one part of the galaxy and equip it with the best weapons there, then head ealsewhere to upgrade the reactor and engines, then elsewhere to upgrade it's shields.

Eventually you'll end up in an "upgrade triangle" as you end up earning enough cash on one lap to buy a new ship and have to do the whole thing again.

When you finally break out of the loop by starting the main story line, you end up fighting for the rebellion and attacking the Republic. This immediately breaks your upgrade loop as everyone now hates you, apart from the shield guys, but to get to them you have to go all the way through the heart of the Republic and carries the feeling of complete suicide. So you have to hope that you can keep your best ships alive, while only losing the cannon fodder ones. Realistic? Yes. Fun to play as you watch the last of your Osprey medium warships blows up? Noooooo. That's one of the three issues with the story, heres the other two:

The missions themselves are more varied than just fetch, deliver, or escort quests. Theres still a lot of those, but at least the main quest line is somewhat different. Though the scouting missions are absolute torture. They should be renamed "Destroy every ship at this star system by yourself, as there's no way any ship can sneak through the enemy forces there and we're to lazy to even try and help you."

The other issue is the narrative combat missions at the start of the mainline story line. At this point the game wants to paint the image of the player in a small ship still, say a fighter or a light warship. Me? I showed up in the Bactrian, the best human ship in the game and a small fleet, after previous play throughs had taught me that showing up to the rebellion in a light warship was a one-way ticket to suicide-ville. As it stands, the player has to have about 50mil credits invested in ships otherwise they get steam-rolled by republic ships. And then it's a coin toss as to whether you survive the mission as chances are the enemy will focus fire on you, your shields go down in two seconds and a minute later your now a gaseous vapor in orbit of the star. So I would say that needs rebalancing.

After the main story line ends, the player is turfed back out onto the galaxy, and can now go about building a giant fleet to subjugate all of humanity. I know there's some story beyond this, but then it becomes a hunt for clues as to where the next fragment begins.

All in all a very enjoyable game, that can be played on a laptop or Macbook without a proper mouse.

How is this game free??? I would of happilly paid...9.99...14.99?
Commodity trading? yes
Escorting? yes
Ship capturing? yes
Hauling jobs (freight and peeps)? job
Lots of Pirates? Yes
Bounty Hunting? Yes
Decent Ship customization? Yes...but not awesome...just decent...which is still fairly good..(7/10)
Simple fleet management? Yes...like follow, stay, group, focus fire for entire fleet (thats all the commands unless im missing something). useful and very easy to use..but simple
Lots of fun refences? yes

Plot? Sort of, i haven't really explored but there seems to be a fairly minimal one

bugs? no not even a single crash, glitch, issue, oopsie, or snafu

Its free, you'd be a fool not get it. I would buy it up to 14.99 happily, 19.99 hesitantly, and not over 20.00.

Also i'm unsure why it says only 8.5 hours, ive been playing it straight for days...maybe like 20+ hours? idk

Amazingly awesome blast from the past, lose yourself for hours in this game, just like the original. lacking on storylines for now but the main one is pretty good. There are pros and cons compared to the original but mostly they balance out well.
Why not charge for this? I'd buy it.

Very enjoyable game which does what it does very well. Runs smoother and plays better than many AAA-released games. It will be a joy to see where this is when it comes out of beta and there are more mod releases.

How should I start with this game. It's too amazing not to get! Let's just get straight to the reasons why.

Pros:
-Different alien species to meet
-Many ships to buy
-A decent ship upgrading system
-Many different star systems and planets to discover
-FIGHT PIRATES!!!
-Escort ships
-Build and manage your own fleet of mighty starships
-No bugs, crashes, or gliches what so ever

Cons:
-Story is small
-Combat is (at least for me) a little diffcult

Should you get this game? YES! 100% yes! A lot better than space games that cost money. And the devs are adding content that allow the public to add to the game. Fantastic!

This game is over the top. Alot of the reviews say that there isnt a storyline is plain wrong. The storyline is actually pretty epic. It takes a long time to complete because you are preetty much forced to get the biggest fleet possible before even THINKING of doing anything.
The graphics look dang good, and the espew of ships, upgrades, and amount of things to do is mind boggling.
Kind of like the first time we plaed Skyrim.
This game came out long before endless sky so also ya'll please stop comparing it. The storyline, premise, and everything are completely different the only remote similarity is that they are both 4x games.
So unto my reveiw.
First of all the the game is free! USD 0.00
Thats right, completely free. Ive played this game more than big open world games that I go all completionist on, Skyrim, GTA, Far Cry, Witcher, Shadow of Mordor, No Mans Sky.
The only other game i have so many hours logged in Planetside 2 and I have like 3 days or something pyscho, like 100+ hours.
So for the pricing 10/10
Graphics are also very good for a small group fo programmers so 10/10, you cant expect AAA quality from a small program base, but the quality is above that of most high rolling indie games.
Music and Sound Affect, every time you enter a star system and hear the ping of empty full, hostiles come zooming in, or a damn republic ship scanning you and fining you for drugs makes you riveted and on your seat. To be honest, I tend to do alot of cargo runs and play on my phone while my OP ships zoom across twenty star systems. So 10/10 in the music.
Controls, idfk. They are confusing. I tried playing manual for five minutes and gave up. This is the only real downside of the game. The auto-controls work best. 5/10
Gameplay. My previous intro covered it pretty well. 10/10
Overall my grade is 9/10
All because the controls suck.
I would recommend this game to anyone and it definently deserves higher praise than it is currently getting.
Good work developers and keep at it!

I can't believe this is free! <3

This game brings back so much nostalgia from playing the original Escape Velocity by Ambrosia software. I remember playing EV on my Dad's Mac LC III back in 1996. I had spent countless hours building up my empire, taking over planets and trying to rule the galaxy. It looks like I'll have my chance to do that all over again!

For the time I have spent so far, the execution for Endless Sky has been fantastic. The mechanics are very similar to Escape Velocity but there are some nice additions to the hotkeys and the ways that the game is able to interact with them...it's just smarter and more intuitive. The writing is incredibly charming and well thought out. There is a lot of detail and lore that has been created for those that enjoy that. I've just found out that the writing is open-sourced and those who wish to can contribute on the git-hub page (very cool). There seems to be a good group of writers who have been contributing to the details of alien species, other planets and their biomes/exports/civilizations etc.

The difficulty level is easy at the beginning but ramps up relatively quickly. Those who encounter pirates and aren't quick to escape or hail a friendly ship may get blown apart pretty quickly if they aren't familiar with the controls and mechanics. There is also a fair bit of grinding to get your credits rolling which can be even more painful at the beginning due to the loan you have to pay off from acquiring your starter ship. Although these come across as negatives, they do come hand-in-hand with the genre and it's "predecessor."

My only feature request: Cloud Saves. I would love to be able to easily pick up where I left off while on a laptop without having to manually maneuver saves around.

If you like space/sim/exploration/story with a decent skill ceiling, this game is for you.

Exceptional.

A fleet manager that is almost a 4x. At first it is quite hard with even the starting quest being a little difficult but the very forgiving save system makes it alright. Looks old and handles old, and plays like a classic. Would of payed for it, but its free, so you have no excuse.

Well its free and addicting so just try it and you'll see... So stressful in the beginning as the pressure mounts to figure the game out and pay off your mortage, then once you do you feel like a pro even though you're not. Very fun and simple, as a teacher I recommend this game for kids because you have to read more than you actually play, plus it unvolves tons of math and business sense.

I loved playing these kind of games as a kid. This game perfectly scratches that itch.

It's free and it's a great game. There is no reason not to play it.
