About This Game

FINAL FANTASY VI first debuted in 1994 as the sixth instalment in the iconic FINAL FANTASY series. Innovations included the ability to play all the main characters as the game's protagonist, and to this day, its epic story intertwining each of their fates is still highly rated and wildly popular.

With plenty of abilities available and the magicite system for controlling spells/summoning, players can develop their characters any way they want. This was also the first FINAL FANTASY game to include the Ultima Weapon, the most powerful sword of all and a recurring item in subsequent titles within the series.

Story
The War of Magi left little but ashes and misery in its wake. Even magic itself had vanished from the world. Now, a thousand years later, humankind has remade the world through the power of iron, gunpowder, steam engines, and other machines and technologies.

But there is one who possesses the lost power of magic--a young girl name Terra whom the evil Empire has kept enslaved in an effort to harness her power as weapon. This leads to a fateful meeting between Terra and a young man named Locke. Their harrowing escape from the Empire's clutches sets in motion a series of events that touches countless lives and leads to one inevitable conclusion.

Key Features
  • Veteran character designer Kazuko Shibuya has painstakingly recreated the graphics, bringing the world of FINAL FANTASY VI to your PC for the very first time!

This was my fiist time playing this game so I don't have nostalgia influencing my review. I have been a casual FF fan for a while and always considered FF7 the best of the series. I was wrong, this game is by far the best Final Fantasy and has become one of my all time favorite games. The characters are great, you develope a connection with them and end up caring about most of your party members (sorry Umaro and Gogo). The story is solid. An ancient war, magic disappearing from the planet, an industrial revolution rising from the ashes of a once scorched earth, an evil empire draining magic for their own empowerment, a love triangle, rediscovering self worth, the list goes on. I can see how this game influenced FF7 in many ways, only FF6 did it better.

Many reviews criticize the graphics becuase this is a port of the iOS/Android game. Who cares? It looked great to me on my 1080p monitor. Sure the sprites are a bit cleaner now but I don't feel like that distracts from the game at all. It still has a wonder retro fibe to it. I had a Sega Genesis as a kid, not a SNES, so I never go to experience this game in its full glory. But, as someone who doesn't like to emulate/pirate, this was the best way for me to expierence this wonderful game without spending a ton on a GBA cartridge. If you're on the fence, I wholeheartedly recommend getting this game. I spent a fantastic 35 hours with Terra, Locke, Celes and the gang and cannot stop thinking about it. It's sticking with me. Here's hoping FF15 will be half as good.

Not a bad port, but not the greatest, it has is upsides and downsides. This FF6 version is ported from the iOS/Android mobile edition, based on the Game Boy Advance edition for Final Fantasy VI, so expect a different translation from that what we knew in the Super Nintendo release. Many bugs and glitches were fixed so if you were expecting to use them at your favor, then don't count on it.

This Version PROS:

- Enhanced Graphics.
- New Translation more accurate to the history and less trigger happy that Nintendo early 1990's police.
- A bit less of censorship (Cafes are now Pubs & Bars).
- The Original Great FF6 history.
- More Espers (summons).
- More Dungeons.
- Cards, Badges and Emoticons.

This Version CONS:

- Based from the Game Boy Advance edition, the Celes beating scene was censored/removed (can be restored with a patch, look in the community hub).
- Certain Monsters and Summons were censored by covering their shameful body display (Siren, Lakshmi & Goddess, can be restored with community patches).
- Loading/Lags the game does not retain the SNES fluidity, after battles, exiting main menus, entering new dungeons or towns can cause a small loading freeze for about 1 to 2seconds.
- Lack of Video filters, only bilinear available and always ON, can be deactivated trough mods, (Seriously SquareEnix why can't you could add Open Source filters like xBRz, Scanlines?, etc.).
- No upper resolutions above 1360*768.

What Could make this port better?.

- Fixing the above CONS mentioned.

Still is a good game, be sure that the game is still enjoyable. Personally I would have loved to have a faithful edition closer to the Japanese edition with zero censorship.

Yes, among the original and various remakes of this game, this particular port is not the best. It has bizarre graphical choices, censorship, and lacks the cutscenes of some versions. But, the fact is that it is a remake of what is definitely in the contention for the top 10 video games ever made, and has to be in the top 3 of best RPGs ever made. So I am incapable of hitting the thumbs down. If you are going to play it, and have played FF6 before consider getting some of the mods to keep any already minor disappointment to a minimum.

It's Final Fantasy VI. Never mind that the graphics are not to my liking, mods can fix that. It's got a great story and, for the most part, the visuals are enjoyable. Not to mention the music, which is superb as well. If you feel uneasy about the price, then wait for a sale. It'll be well worth it.

I love FFVI, I will start out with that. The great music and story are still here, so that is good. Even the downgraded graphics I don't mind too much. But the interface... man, the interface is garbage. It was designed for a tablet, and they didn't bother changing it for a PC player. There are some tweaks you can make to it, but all the options are bad. Also, the max resolution is 1360x768, so you can't even play it at 1080, much less anything higher. There's aslo bad background tearing when you move. This is really unacceptable, it would have been better to put the SNES or GBA version in an emulator. I love this game, but this version is just not well done. Spend a little time on a game this well loved SquareEnix, don't put out this trash, your devoted fanbase deserves better.

Edit on 12/23:

I have reached a point in the game where I can not progress. The game crashes everytime a specific event happens. I have tried it on multiple machines, exact same crash. This game is UNPLAYABLE.

Edit on 1/1:

A work around has been found for the crash. Turns out its a bug present even in the iOS version that they never bothered to fix. Just another reason to not support trashy ports.

Waited years for FFVI to come to steam. I grew up with this RPG. Constantly renting it from blockbuster as a kid because my saved game would get wiped by someone else.

This is a poor iOS port. The resolution ends at 1368. Put this to wide screen and it looks hideous with the sides being black bars. SE literally just took the iOS port and changed a few lines of code so it would work with PC and charged the same price.

Shame too. This is a classic game. Instead it uses the new sprites from the iOS release and not the original sprites from the SNES version. I had to refund it because it's not what I expected.

It really hurts me to give this game a bad review, but I must vote with my conscience. This is a very poor port that needed some extra time before it was released.

First thing I noticed, HORRIBLE sound quality, like nails on a chalkboard. The original SNES version did not suffer from this problem. Even worse is the ridiculously low max resolution. How is it that a new update is released that allows people to play KOTOR 2 at 1920 by 1080, and this game is locked at a maximum of 1368 by 768? This is not 2004, Square, this is embarrasing.

In my opinion, the graphics are an upgrade compared to the SNES version, but on the whole, this is a techincal flop. Also has an issue screen tearing, which Square claims can be fixed with anti aliasing, but this option is not available at release. I knew I really should have taken a wait and see approach, given Square's hit and miss history with past ports, but come on, this is freaking Final Fantasy 6. Should have been a no brainer. If they just took a direct port of the SNES version, and changed absolutely nothing, it would have been worth the price. Sadly, they chose to make a bad port of a bad port of a mobile version. Fans have been worried that was the lazy approach, and they were absolutely right.

The one good thing is there is no additional hidden DRM like they tried to sneak past gamers on past ports. The ability to rebind keyboard controls is also a good thing. However, it's just not enough to recommend this game. Such a shame, but it looks like it's back to using an emulator for me if I ever want to experience this masterpiece as it was meant to be seen.

This is the very first game where I requested a refund. If these issues are fixed, I'll buy it again. Until then, praise be to Gabe Newell for introducing the refund policy to protect us from games such as this overpriced, lazy, and frankly embarrasing downgrade of a classic.

I love Final Fantasy 6. I also love when it did not crash when my snes controller was plugged in my Snes, or my PS1 controller plugged into my PS1, hell it was even great when my gameboy advance SP worked without crashing using the controller that was built into it.

This mobile version port however does crash when I use my controller. The menus are all greatly enlarged as set for a mobile device. Since I cant use a controller I was stuck with 2 options, bind my keys in a really uncomfortable way so I could play and name my chars without having random extra chars like Lockea, or deal with the names being screwed up. I would have the third option if it didnt crash when my controller was connected.

I am surely going to get some flak for this and I understand why. If you have the snes ps1 gba or the game on ur Wii like I do with all of the above, just play that. This is a 15$ port of a mobile version and they didnt clean up the button functionality or even bring the menu size to normal. Asking for a refund.

Ok bring on the hate.

Do not buy. Not a proper port. Seriously, they could have just uploaded a ROM + Emulator that you can find anywhere for free and I wouldn't feel as jipped as I do buying a mobile game on my PC.

And for $15? Don't let them get away with this.

In all honesty, when I saw it on the store, I instinctively assumed it was an official release of the original ROM. For that price was it so unreasonable to think that? I was disappointed to find that the game that I bought was not the game I remember playing when I was younger.

Final Fantasy 6 is among my favorite games. However this port, remake, whatever you want to call it, is the worst way to experience it.

- Initially had always-online DRM. This has been patched out; good. But should never have happened in the first place.

- The already abysmal mobile interface is ported wholesale to PC with little optimization, with buttons and scroll bars in place of more thoughtful, less obtrusive, less eyesore layouts. It's as bad on the eyes as it is on the hands, and the one good idea behind the battle UI -- everyone's menus on screen at once, Chrono Trigger style -- suffers as a result.

- Dancing Mad, the final battle theme, used to smoothly transition between its various tiers as the fight progressed. Now, each tier of music just abruptly interrupts the last. In a game known for its stellar music, no less.

- The in-game "Album," which acts as the story log/chronicle, has events that are missable (#26, if you don't nab it in the World of Balance), and doesn't respect your decisions and party choices (it acts as though Mog was first met in the World of Ruin; the screenshots mostly just show Celes, Edgar, Sabin, and Setzer despite who you tend to use).

- The multiplayer feature present in the SNES original is gone.

- Configuring controls must be done through a launcher; the in-game options menu has no controller configuration. And if you accidentally unplug or power down your controller during play, well, that's a restart.

- Various long-known, long-outstanding bugs from the original SNES release are still present. Though admittedly, some are addressed, such as Physical Evade actually working and Cyan's Bushido (SwdTech) actually working as intended (pick a skill, he charges as other party members act).

- If you set your movement to WASD, the keys register as part of a new character's name when you try to save, preventing you from naming ANYONE their default name.

- Intermittent freezing/crashing, sometimes from controllers, sometimes not.

- Ill-thought-out visual remastering, with mismatching styles and overall poor quality, including a mixed bag of new sprites and hilariously bad spell effects (compare Flare Star and Forsaken/Goner to their originals, or even the poor GBA versions...).

Square Enix has said they charge more for their games because they deliver better experiences. Many of their games prove this rhetoric thoroughly false, though perhaps none more so than the Steam version of Final Fantasy 6.

Very disappointing.

This is a port of the mobile title. I'm not going to say anything bad about the game, though, due to the story, music and for the most part, the sprites, being very close to the original. It might take a moment to get use to the cleaner looks the sprites have, but especially people that never played the previous versions, this is actually very good to introduce you to this game's world.

I have held this game close to my heart for 20 years. I can only say, without spoiling the story, that everything from the original is cleaned up, including the "engrish" of the original translation. If you love JRPGs or the Final Fantasy franchise at large, this is truly a must have and moreso, a must play. I will always recommend this game, no matter the port.

i dont know why, but i've tried about everything, ff6 crashes randomly, sometimes on startup more than in-game, first time i've actually sat down and played ff6, its one of the main ffs thats eluded me, the game is awesome, but it crashes randomly, last night it did 2 times last night, once when i stared it, then it crashed after i done some major exp farming in phoenix cave and done my quests which took 4+ hrs, after i got Locke back and went to narshe and got my ragnarok wpn it just crashed randomly, thank goodness i saved right before it happened or i would've lost 4+ hrs of progress, so needless to say im not really wanting to play the rest of it because of that happening which will make me mad and the last thing in an rpg where you have to save manually the last thing you need is the game to crash for whatever reason, its too bad i cant really continue and taking that chance playing because i've really gotten into it, my other ffs on steam dont do that? Its getting to the point to where its frustrating me to where i had to post this, pardon my language but this is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ port of the game, either SE or whoever ported the game to steam needs to fix this or i'd like to have a refund or credit for another game, its a shame i cant play the rest after putting into 60+ hrs of ptime, ff6 at least on here is buggy, reason why i dont like xbox is because of the same issue with rpgs, awesome game but ♥♥♥♥♥♥ port! its a shame!!

I'll start with the usual elephant in the room stuff:

Yes, the graphics are not what I'm used to.
Yes, the UI is quirky
Yes, it's not quite the game I'm used to

Still well worth getting. Whether you've played it since it hit North American shores like me, or are looking at starting it for the first time, it's still a great game at its core.

I came in to this expecting to play what I know and love. It has not disappointed in that respect, so why complain? In fact, I'm actually running around talking to every single NPC for the first time in decades because the revision of the script interests me. I have a few issues with a few spots so far, but overall the dialog changes add a welcome refresh.

I'm only about 1/3 of the way through so far, so there's plenty left for me to re-discover. I'd give an overall 4 out of 5. Still my all time favorite FF game.

I have really enjoted this game, until my 128 hour end game save disapeared on me last night. I have tried everything to recover the save data, but with no success.

I'm not sure whether this was a squenix problem or a steam cloud sync problem. Either way though I can't recomend a game that can suffer complete failure when I have so much time into it.

I would recommend this game if you have ever played any other FF and enjoyed yourself.
Not too much grind just play through the story if you want a decent challenge.
