The Codex Astartes supports AND encourages this. By the Emperor's will, you will buy this game, or you shall be known as a heretic, and slaughtered like one!

In the Grim Darkness of the far future, there is only war!

But, apparently, there was a dawn of that war, or maybe they were just noting the time of day whilst firing stuff at eachother. Moving on...

In the wake of Command and Conquer and Star Craft's success... no one seemed too fussed about making any decent base building RTS games anymore. EA, as is their habit when they acquire new talented developement studios, managed to kill Westwood Studios and turn C&C into something unrecognisable and barely wanted, whilst Blizzard focussed on turning Star Craft into a hero focussed competative affair.

But THQ managed to cater to a niche in a fun way, whilst also giving some attention to Games Workshop, who in the wake of their failure LOTRs boardgame, were desperate for money. Normally zealously protective of their IP with few exceptions, (Space Hulk, Chaos gate, Armegeddon), it was nice for older fans of 40k who had been priced out of the model collecting side of the hobby to continue their tactical murder simulation in style.

That's literally what this game is, a base building, troop building blow up your foe fest, with an interesting if not gloriously predictable campaign. It's fun, you'll like it.

It's very old, and it shows horribly in both graphics and gameplay.

First annoyance: Whenever you boot it up it goes to the Steam overlay, prompting you to CREATE YOUR RELIC ACCOUNT. Yeah, nope, attrocious. Give it a rest already.

While the campaign is entertaining in a B-movie way and the small animations of your Terminators crushing enemies are both brutal and fun to watch, your troops start messing up as soon as you have more than 10 of them; clustering together in tight spots, stopping on their way to attack-move somewhere so you need to issue another order to get them going, and having the map central on units immediately when selecting them forcing you to go back to where the action is/was to order them where to attack (as opposed to Star Craft gameplay where centralizing on units only occurs if you double click the shortcut for the unit).

Case in point: Your troops captures a relic point. You then select a servant to build a listening post, however the camera goes to that unit instead of just selecting it while still being over the listening point area you just captured, making you have to click on the map where that point was and then clicking on the place you want to build again - every damn time you want to build something. It's really jarring and halts your progression and flow in a very tedious, frustrating manner.

I'm sure this was decent for its time, but games have moved on since then and it's just too old and finicky to compete. Adding to that, it has no resolutions for 1920x1080 and the camera, even when zoomed all the way out, is way to close to your troops and ground to get what you'd consider a normal overview in RTS games.

Only get it in a bundle as I did, or stay away, even on a sale.

First of all, I'd recommend the Master Collection as a whole. The games are all worth playing through, and you have to own them all to use every race for online multiplayer in Dark Crusade/Soulstorm, if that matters to you.

But let's say you're hesitant and want to buy them one at a time. That's cool too, and I'd certainly recommend starting here even if you buy the Master Collection. The Space Marine campaign this game offers is a great introduction to the series, and will serve you much better than throwing yourself into one of the more organic campaigns of Dark Crusade or Soulstorm.

The gameplay is rather hard to describe, but the essential is that you build up your base, proceeding through tech-levels to unlock/produce more powerful units/vehicles, all while fighting for control of the resource points (the resources are needed for units/vehicles/buildings/upgrades) on the map and trying to destroy the enemy's base/not get yours destroyed. The victory conditions can vary, from destroying the enemy's headquarters, needing to eradicate them completely, or fighting for control of the difficult to defend "Critical locations" and holding a majority for a set amount of time (or completely eradication the enemy to end it faster).

The base Dawn of War offers four races to skirmish with. The Space Marines, who are the only playable faction in the campaign, the Eldar, the Orks, and Chaos. One of the images in the slideshow shows the Sisters of Battle assaulting a Dark Eldar base, but that's from Soulstorm and shouldn't be there. Every faction plays differently, with the only overlap being some very similar units between Chaos and the Space Marines, but they have different stats/upgrades and have their own faction art. You're also able to customize the factions with the Army Painter, or use one of the several presets corresponding to different factions within the Warhammer universe.

The campaign is, in my opinion, the best one in the original set. You only plays one faction, accomplishing static goals, and so it's only good for one runthrough, but that allows it to be the most polished of the bunch. It eases you into the game, introducing concepts slowly enough for you to grasp it all, but you will fail if you don't use everything it teaches you.]

So, if you're looking at the series for the first time, or have already decided to buy the set, I'd recommend this one first. It's the best introduction to Dawn of War there is, unless you've found you prefer the incredibly different style of Dawn of War II.
