What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“NIGHTSTAR is a functional game in its current state, and I'll be polishing the game, expanding its current content, and adding more features with the feedback of the amazing VR community.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I am aiming to have the full version of NIGHTSTAR ready by Christmas 2016. That being said, Early Access will last for as long as needed, since the idea is always to improve on the current game. I wish to deliver a great and fun product, with lots of replayability and awesome content.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The early access version of NIGHSTAR already has a very solid base. The full version will be an even more polished version of the current version of NIGHSTAR. I'll be adding additional features, enemies, weapons, and will be expanding on the current gameplay.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version is currently fully playable, clean of major bugs, and brings weapon upgrades, a large variety of enemies, bosses, and space stations. This will get even better with time, as I'll introduce more enemies, weapons, and ship customization.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“No.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I'm definitely open to listening the community's suggestions and ideas for this game. I want this game to be a great title for all virtual reality enthusiasts out there.”

WOOHOO! NIGHTSTAR's Free Demo is now available, plus a MASSIVE CONTENT UPDATE!

Hello my fellow pilots,

First, a couple of links!

http://nightstarvr.com/ - official website, so fancy!
http://store.steampowered.com/app/511570/ - NIGHTSTAR on Steam, get the demo here!

Since the release of Nightstar last week, I've been overwhelmed by the amount of people playing the game, leaving reviews and sending me feedback (and also putting up awesome high scores on the leaderboard, damn, you guys are getting good at this). It also helped me to notice that there's a huge amount of people out there that are interested in the game, but because there's not a lot of games similar to this one available for the Vive, these potential players are not sure if this is the game for them. For that reason, I decided to make the free demo available for everyone starting today. The demo is basically identical to the full version of the game, except that it ends when you reach a score of 1000 points. This free demo should give new players about 5 minutes of gameplay, and it can be replayed as many times as needed.

Ok, now, with that out of the way, let's talk about the updates that come with version 0.3a. As we get closer to the end of the Early Access phase, I'm adding some new stuff and polishing existing features, and I'm super excited about all of this, so let's go straight to the point.

Here's the changelog with commentary:

- NEW UNIQUE WEAPONS. Some enemies will drop a unique weapon upgrade. These weapons have limited ammo and are extremely powerful if you know how to use them. When the ammo is over, the ship will re-equip the standard weapons automatically. Unique Weapons are not affected by the player's power level.

- NEW AND BETTER ENEMIES. There are some new enemies. I won't spoil this, so go ahead and play the game :) Existing enemies have also received some additional work, and are more balanced than ever. There are some variations on the behavior of the old and new baddies.

- ENEMY FORMATION. Like on the classic side-scrollers, Nightstar now has enemies that come in formations that follow different flight patterns.

- STAGES (or "Levels"). Each Stage now feels unique and have different sequences of enemies. I also changed what triggers the hyperdrive that takes the player to the next stage. This will eliminate the possibility of "farming" for points on low levels.

- STEAM NAMES ON GLOBAL LEADERBOARD. Previously, the game was using the player's OS user name, and many of us have usernames like "admin" or "owner" or other words that not necessarily represents us. So, starting now, the new high scores submitted to the leaderboard will use the player's Steam name! Also, because of all the balance updates, I'll be resetting the global leaderboard. This might happen again at some point on the next updates. but I'll try to keep the leaderboard intact for as long as possible.

- GLOBAL LEADERBOARD REDESIGN. Now it's easier to see who the top 3 players in the world are. I also updated some other things on the design to make the leaderboard look better, and you can scroll down and check who's on the list.

- PERFORMANCE OVERHAUL. I made some minor changes to the graphics settings, and the game should run more fluidly for most players.

Well, that's it for today! Hope you enjoy the free demo, updates and new content! More cool stuff to come soon :)

Fly safely

tl;dr: Bunch of new stuff. Also, check the first few lines of this post for the links.

NIGHTSTAR UPDATE! 0.2a is now available!

Hello, my fellow pilots. I'm happy to announce that the first public update for NIGHTSTAR is out. This is the first of a series of updates that will come with new content, balance adjustments and bug fixes.

Here's the changelog:

- Additional Shield. If the player has three health points and gets an additional Health Pickup, the starfighter's shield will overcharge creating an additional barrier for enemy fire. This barrier shows on-screen surrounding the player's ship, and on the floating HUD as a line surrounding the player's health.

- New fire mode: Homing Missiles! When the player reaches level 19, a new weapon will unlock, allowing the Nightstar to fire deadly homing missiles.

- Balance tweaks. Many values were tweaked in order to achieve a better balance for the game.

- Graphics! New textures and shaders for the player and enemy ships, asteroids, and others.

That's all for today. More to come soon!

Here is my very first impression review on nightstar after I got the key from the developer. It is a shoot’em up game like r-type or the lab minigame Xortex. While Xortex is a more static room scale experience, nightstar feels like a scroller game. Best description is here a front-scroller because all the enemy ships and asteroids fly towards you.

Gameplay
It’s a shoot’em up, simple target the enemy, press the trigger and try not got hit. The ship got a moment of inertia so you have to calculate this. The only down side is enemies shooting even they passed you, this makes some very unfair attacks from the blind spot.
Also some of the little fragments look like the filling stars that pass you, so you run into them and taking random damage.
Also the spaceship shoots a bit upwards can’t tell if bug or feature.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34Ocr3Xpwb4

Graphic
It looks very good for an early access game. The little ships looks very distinctive even on low quality. Effects like explosions and the red fade out during dead rounds the geme.

Sounds
Awesome. The Soundtrack and the sound effects are very good and let the game feels like an old arcade game.

VR compatibility
Even the constant “scrolling” did, at least for me, not any nausea. The ground grid is for my taste a bit far away, but makes a nice grounding in space. The game can be played with one controller so you can switch hands during play to avoid a tennis elbow. Or play the game while a controller is broken or on repair. It’s a plus point.

Result
Can’t wait to see how the future of the game looks like more power ups or different ships.

I bought this based off a review saying this was Xortex 2.0. That being said it is nothing like Xortex.. it is a different style of game. Nightstar is a scrolling shooter, Xortex is a room scale shooter.

That being said this is a fun arcade game that I plan on playing a lot more.

As I play more I find my ship getting hit by dimly lit objects that are very difficult to see.. Hopefully in the future this gets updated.

I give this a positive review because it is worth a play if you buy a lot of games. I rarely purchase games... If I had the chance to demo this game before buying I would have spent my money on a different game.

Someone on here was saying that this isn't a roomscale shooter or whatever. it's basically the next step after the lab's xortex. you absolutely can walk in and out of the "stream of combat" and when I thought I was slick and decided i would stand beside and blow everything up as it went by having only to dodge a few projectiles...nope before I knew it I was back right in the middle of it. I honestly can't even tell you if I just walked back in because I was having too much fun. You don't have to watch for thing coming from behind you (so you don't get wrapped up in your cord spinning circles constantly looking for stuff) and it's more like flying through space then blasting stuff in an arena. honestly in my opinion the two biggest flaws of xortex. Can't recommend enough. if you liked xortex. this is actually better enough to be worth the 15 bucks. I'm probably buying my friend a copy for his vive, that will be a first for a non multiplayer game. it's that good.

Yep, this is a keeper. Tried the demo, bought the full game after two plays. This is completely different than any other VR game I've played so far, in that it isn't really first person. It's more third person, with one controller being the ship. It moves wherever you move the controller, pretty much instantly. It's really easy to just stand in one spot and just wave the controller around, but this is a room scale game. Walk around to get better angles, or dodge thick packs of things that are coming from one area, etc. Awesome game, lots of replayability.

My one complaint would be how long it takes to reset after game over. I want to click through whatever scoring it's showing me and just restart immediately, but it makes me wait ~20 seconds and then brings the menu up to allow a new game.

Excellent! Very addictive. It's more similar to Crystal Nebula minus the maze.

Initially after seeing the video, I was not too impressed. But the gameplay is much better than I thought. The enemies wave are different each time. They are randomly generated. One feature I like the most is that you can regain your health by picking up powerups.

It was confusing at first how the level and powerup works. I died often without knowing how I got shot. It is quite addictive. I just bought the game today and I played almost 2 hrs. Actually I am going back in very soon.

Love this game, wildly addictive - reminiscent of arcade style shoot em ups that I still love to play (galaga!), but finally arrived in VR in all of its glory!!!

I still haven't beaten any of the bosses, but I keep getting closer...

Highly recommend, looking forward to playing more! (winning.)

ps. I've had the pleasure of playing various versions of this game as its been developed, and I'm stoked to see it on the Steam store now!

Super fun game! The feeling of traveling through space is awesome, and because of the static background and steady velocity, works well without any dizziness whatsoever. The difficulty is perfectly balanced between too easy and too hard, making it very satisfying to actually get to the next level. The intensity of the game seems to pick up as you get upgrades, so it's always a challenge to keep your ship in top shape (you lose some upgrades when you're shot). The game works well for any-heighted people (even kids!).

There are a few annoying things that will probably get cleaned up in time by the developer. For instance, there's no way to exit the game except from within the VR headset (you lose mouse control once the game goes full screen and takes over the monitor). I look forward to seeing further updates!

Yes, Yes Yes!

Imagine a development of Vortex in Valve's "The Lab."

Imagine no more, it's here in the form of a forward scrolling retro shootem up. Absolutely brilliant use of room scale too, start at the front of your play space and find yourself pressed to the very back of it, by the end of the game.

This one has great potential.

Wishlist? A few more music tracks and the option to turn off the grid effect on the roof.

If you like shoot 'em ups you're going to love Nightstar! Imagine an old school style shooter like Silpheed (yes, I really am that old) dragged into the 21 century and now in full 3d, and you've pretty much got Nightstar.

Pro's: Extremely addictive, challenging and rewarding gameplay. Awesome use of the 3d effect that makes you feel like you're flying through a miniaturised space battle.

Con's: Made my trigger finger hurt.
