Update 1.2: Preliminary Marking Mode

Hi there,

I have spend this weekend preparing another update for Patterna. This update mainly adds two things: A mode that allows you to mark nodes without committing to them and a new input mode for touchscreens (based on the one that already exists in the tablet version over on itch.io).
The touch input mode should be considered Beta. Any feedback and all bug reports are very welcome.

Here is the full changelog:

  • Added a 'preliminary marking mode'. Hold down left or right shift while clicking a node to preliminarily mark it as pattern or non-pattern without committing to this choice. You can also press Tab to toggle the mode on or off. Do the same thing again to unmark it. Preliminarily marked nodes are displayed as half-unknown, half-whatever-you-marked-it-as. You can change the hotkeys used for this feature in the launcher. All the information will update as if the nodes you marked preliminarily were already your final choice. When you are in preliminary planning mode, the total nodes left label in the bottom left is marked with a star.
  • You can shift click (or whatever you reset the hotkey to) the 'Reset Highlights' button in the bottom left to reset the preliminary markings on the board.
  • You can now switch to a touch input mode in the options menu. The touch mode works as in the Android version: You are in one of two modes (displayed by a symbol on the left), either marking nodes as pattern or non-pattern by tapping them. Tap any empty space on the board to change the input mode. An indicator on the left hand side of the screen shows you what mode you are currently in. Tap that indicator to toggle preliminary marking mode. Tap the 'Reset Highlights' button while in this mode to reset all preliminary markings. Tap-and-hold a screen element (such as a node) to make its tooltip appear.
  • Fixed information display in the ingame view in the editor when a level is loaded
  • Fixed the instructions screen, where one of the pages was always shown ontop of all other pages
  • Fixed a typo on page 6 of the instructions

Best,
-Sebastian.

Update 1.1: Level Progress now saved

Hi there,

first of all: Thanks to all the people who have played Patterna! It has been an exciting week. If you got stuck, need help, have suggestions, or anything else along these lines, visit the discussions forum and make yourself heard.

I just pushed the first post-release update to Steam. The most important change is that you can now leave a level mid game and come back to it later without losing your progress. For sequence levels, you can simply jump into the level from the menu to get back to where you started. For a random level, you can do the same from the level history list (found in the Extras submenu). The save game will be deleted once you finish the level successfully. To restart the level, use the restart button in the top-right.

Here are all the changes:

  • the game will now save the state of levels when you leave them unfinished. The save for that level will be reset to a clean state when you finish the level. To continue a level from a sequence, simply start it (it can be reset using the button in the top-left). To continue a randomly generated level, visit the level history and click 'Resume'.
  • sequence levels with a saved game are now marked with a special symbol
  • finished sequences are now marked with a checkmark if they have been finished without mistakes and with a cross if they have been finished with mistakes
  • the game will now correctly store rank points
  • double clicking a level's name in the sequence selection will now start the level
  • fixed a bug with the level history where very large levels that take long to generate would not be generated correctly
  • the level history is now properly synchronized to the Steam Cloud
  • fixed a bug in the level generation that made it non-deterministic in certain special cases
  • in the editor, information will now display as in-game when the 'As ingame' view mode is enabled

Best,
Sebastian

About This Game

Patterna is a logic puzzle game inspired by HexCells. It features a highly customizable random level generator, a level editor, more than 70 levels, and an enchanting minimalist soundtrack by Alex Cottrell.

In Patterna, each level is a network of nodes (also known as a graph). In a way similar to HexCells or Minesweeper, each node is ultimately in one of two states (known as pattern and non-pattern). Initially, most nodes' states are unknown. It is the player's task to correctly classify these unrevealed nodes using information based on distance, connectivity, and color. Correctly classifying a node may reveal more information that in turn helps you to solve the level.

  • More than 70 levels, plus a tutorial
  • Procedurally generated levels with plenty of options for the level generator
  • Enchanting minimalist original soundtrack by Alex Cottrell
  • Absolutely no guessing needed
  • Level editor and Steam Workshop support included
  • Extensive gameplay statistics

actually is a very good design game... you will at start feel too confused... and tutorial will confuse you more cause well tutorial try to teach you all statments that game made... but could be reduced if well combien them with proper leves...
the game is great for logic lovers. And you can solve it in worst case with a table of all solutions and looking for a comun set of nodes with same value in all those posible solutions ... of course that take too much time but with more time on game you will start noticing more.

a good time for distract of all those kills and works too well as a brain trainer.

Remember that game Hexcells? This is that, but generalized to any arbitrary graph (rather than just subgraphs of the vertices on a triangular grid). So a lot of my review will be comparing this to that. And yes, I was asked by the developer to write this review. If you're wondering why my playtime on this is so low, it's because I played a beta version on itch.io (which said developer has told me differs only in Steam integration and a few minor bug fixes).

It should be noted that the difficulty level of Patterna is quite a bit higher than that of Hexcells. I'm still struggling with a good chunk of the levels here, which is pretty unprecedented for someone who's been solving logic puzzles hardcore for the last 5 years. Yes, each puzzle has a unique solution. I think. At least, the ones I were able to figure out do.

Oh, and it has an in-game level editor, unlike Hexcells (whose level editor requires you to install Python), and apparently direct access to the Steam Workshop for such levels. So that's another thing that's good.

Funnily enough, I can't actually think of anything much more memorable about this game. But unlike all other negative reviews I've given, Patterna is functional and, at least to some degree, fun.

If you like logic puzzles, Minesweeper, or Hexcells, this game is probably a good buy. But if you don't, forget it. (Then again, if you don't like logic puzzles, what are you even doing reading this?)

The Dark Souls of Puzzle Games.

Patterna is probably the most rewarding puzzler I've ever had the joy of discovering.

At first glance, it can appear very cryptic. There's a lot of symbols and terms like 'nodes' and 'edges' (you can tell it was created by a scholar) - but the behind the fiendish difficulty lies a beautifully straightforward style: Pure deduction.

Akin to Hexcells or Minesweeper: The aim is to clear the 'board' (or whatever a floating space-grid would be called...) by identifying 'pattern' and 'non-pattern' nodes (think of the former as mines, and the latter as empty spaces) - To guide you, you have clues dotted about which tells you the status of nearby nodes. As you uncover nodes, you find more clues.

It can sometimes look daunting - some huge levels inspiring the foetal position... but the secret is in cracking it one bit at a time. You have all the informaiton you need in front of you... it's just about using it. Once you get the hang of what the clues tell you, it's simply about learning to use them together. And that's where the challenge comes in.

But once you crack it... damn it feels awesome.

The music is also gorgeous - beautifully zen and very fitting. A wonderful way of winding down of an evening. Grab a cuppa and get cracking.

Where it may struggle is being a bit... "technical". There are a lot of options (many I don't even dare to touch) and a lot to take in at first. It's like driving a car where you can see all the inner workings. Technically sublime, but not the 'slickest' looking toy out there - so some might find it a bit "much".

Once you crack the learning curve though, it delivers and continually does so; particularly with help from the fantastic random level generator. Contrary to some second-rate substitute for the fun pre-made levels... the engine hasn't disappointed in continually pumping out wonderful, difficult challenges. No matter how much I play, it can always seem to surprise with a new angle. The only downside is that the levels can sometimes hop between easy and holycrapmybrainhurts, so can be a tad inconsistent. But then again, an easy break between the nasty ones is always welcome...

Patterna is, to me, a wonderful triumph in the world of puzzle gaming. It claims to be inspired by Hexcells, but, to me, far surpasses it. If you adore puzzles and want to be challenged - then I feel that you would really enjoy this.

A Logic Puzzle Game
https://youtu.be/sgvDUkMo0iA
+ This is a great logic game for those really looking for a challenge, and want something more complex than similar games like HexCells
+ Nice relaxing soundtrack

- Overly complex and confusing to learn. The tutorial throws in far too many mechanics all at once. I personally had to play through the tutorial a few times to really understand what was going on.
- The tutorial is far too long. I believe the tutorial itself is 52 levels long, and will take over 30mins to get through.
- Some nodes can not be activated until another condition is met. I found this to be very odd and isn't explained very well.

This is indeed very much inspired by Hexcells. There are more mechanics, but it follows the same rule that every level has a solution that can be figured out without guessing.

If you liked Hexcells, get this, you'll like this one too.

Visuals are very utilitarian, I think revamping those would go a long way in making this game a lot more successful. It currently doesn't look like a game that's worth $10, but I think it is.

The tutorial is not that great. I would have preferred a tutorial that was more "baked" into the game, there's too much text for my liking. Stay the course, just give it 10 minutes to go through a few levels and it'll get you hooked.

Music is ok, a bit repetitive.

Overall, a great puzzle game with some execution flaws on the outside.

If you liked Hexcells you will like this even more -- and if you mastered Hexcell you will find very generous amounts of added complexity from the get go. Highly recommended!

I love the variety, am mostly playing random smaller levels. There's larger levels if you want a challenge.

Top notch minimalist puzzler:
  • Pure thinking, no reflexes required.
  • Attractive and uncluttered interface.
  • Both hand-crafted and procedurally generated puzzles.
  • Runs great even on old hardware.
