What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Formicide is already in a stable and fun state. But we have work still to be done, and we want to start getting feedback from the community now while we are in the process of working towards a full launch.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We want our early access phase to last less than a year.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“This list is subject to change, but the highlights are:

Gameplay

  • Choosable ultimate abilities - Each class currently has one ultimate ability. We want each class to have two ultimates that the player can choose from.
  • Improved effect synchronization - A variety of game effects can be better synced between the client and server. We want to improve them.
  • Class balancing - We've spent a lot of time making each class balanced and fun to play. Bringing in more players invariably opens up more strategies and playstyles that will need to be taken into consideration for future changes.
  • Polish - We want to continue polishing each aspect of the game, including effects, environment, messaging, and so forth.

Server

  • Improved server command support - The server already supports server commands, such as changing the max number of players. We want to expand command support, including adding additional commands and adding the ability to send commands to the server from the game client while connected as an administrator.
  • Customizable map rotations - The server currently has one available map rotation. We want to give players the ability to make their own rotations.

User Interface

  • Improved server list - We want to improve the server list in the client. This includes things like sortable columns, a quick search feature, and a favorite servers tab.
  • Class stats - We want to display stats for the local player in the player list.
  • Improved menus - Some of the option menus need additional polishing.

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Formicide has been in development for many years, and is already in a stable and fun state. The current game content already can be considered complete, but we want to expand on it with choosable class ultimates. We also expect to spend time on improving class balance, map layouts, infrastructure, and player experience throughout Early Access.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Formicide's price will increase when it leaves early access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We very much want to engage the community to get feedback on existing content, gauge interest on upcoming content, and hear suggestions for new content.”

Definitly a nice fast paced platform shooter, with a capture point based objective.
Random spawning aids which can give you that necessary boost, but be aware your enemies can contest them or even ninja them.

The different ants have a very unique playstyle, but all are pretty fun to play.
Easy to pick up, but some practice is needed for them to truly shine.

Fluent gameplay and overall pretty good designed maps atm.
Coulnd't find any actual flaws except for some minor map pathing choices.

Comebacks are real too.

Having played earlier versions of Formicide before it was even Greenlit here on Steam. I can tell you that the base of the game itself is simply fun! Watch even the demo video of the game, now imagine some of your guildies and friends from other games inside as your mercielessly trying to destroy each other as awesome super ants!

If you want to experience true indie development, not this "We're gonna put in some 8 bit stuff and call it indie and retro" crap that has been plauging steam the last few years now, then give this a shot.

Like a 2D lovechild of Dota, Overwatch, TF2, and Soldat. Super fun old-school class-based team battles. Highly recommended.

Played since the early alpha days of the game. Had such a fun time back then. If you like Soldat and Overwatch then I highly recommend this game!

CANT describe a better way to blow off steam; this game's quite absorbANT for my stress. This is very helpful for me, where a thirty-minute time dedication is not always possible.

A strong variety of classes, each with their own weapons, makes the game dynamic and exciting. Randomly located occasional drops grANTing sky bombs or seeker missiles add an additional realm of strategy to the mix, while creative level design increases the options available to each team. These maps come in all shapes and sizes, from frozen wastelands to lush rocks flush with plANT life.

These wANTon critters sport an assortment of dangerous and diverse propellANTs designed to wreak havoc and disrupt the other team’s constANT quest to gain advANTage:

- Biomite – ANThrax-ridden destroyer
- Cannoneer – ErrANT bomber-man
- Engineer – ArrogANT know-it-all
- Fire Ant – CroissANT-baking monster
- Hunter – Sneaky ANTics abound
- Shock Trooper – Electric deviANT
- Sniper – ANTi-melee strategist
- Soldier – MilitANT strong-man

Hands down the best formic warfare simulator on the market.

Unrivaled and exquisite ant flavored violence.

Easy to pick up and difficult to master, gameplay reminiscent of Liero, but with attention paid to competitive balance.

In short this game is fANTastic.
