What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“For sandbox games, there’s a long tradition of open development and community involvement – and we want Portal Knights to be a part of that tradition. We’re looking forward to getting players into the game early on, and having your feedback help shape the roadmap.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We are not entirly sure, because we don't know what the reception and feedback will be, but the initial idea is to get a release candidate in 2016. Beyond that we will consider updating the game and releasing additional content.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version of the game will have more content – worlds, monsters, bosses, crafting recipes, and beyond. However, we also have ambitions for deeper RPG mechanics, more multiplayer features, in-game events, vanity items, and much more. That said, we want to keep our plans pretty loose so that we can evolve the game based on feedback.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“All major features are in the game; character customization, world generation, mining, building, crafting, combat, level progression, portal travel, boss battles, multiplayer, etc. However there may be aspects of the game that still require polish; we appreciate your understanding on that front and ask for you to please be as descriptive as possible when giving us feedback. We’re dedicated to providing regular updates, and are committed to the game being playable and stable throughout Early Access.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“A decision on the final pricing will be made during the Early Access period, and may be higher depending on the amount of features and content added to the game”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Both 505 Games and Keen have various social media profiles where you can reach us . But the idea is to focus the development feedback on the Steam Forum. We'll monitor the forums for your ideas and questions and will run surveys to gather representative feedback. If you’re passionate about the game, please be a part of this process!”

This game looks and feels amazing.
I love it. I want to play it a lot.

However... The multiplayer aspect needs fixing. I DONT HAVE FRIENDS.
I dont have friends to play portal knights with.
I'd like to join a server to make friends to play, so I'm sad and alone.

I'd really like to get friends... but i have none.

Please add the option for online dedicated servers. (ADD ME)

EARLY ACCESS REVIEW

*** 1 HOUR PLAYED - FIRST IMPRESSIONS *** 15 SEPTEMBER 2016

One crash, but at least it crashed cleanly and had lost only 30 seconds or so of gaming when I resumed it. The standout feature that immediately calls attention to the game is the graphics. Going in I expect Minecraft like graphics (though better, as the screenshots show), but I think they're even better than the screenshots make out.

The music fits the games ambience well, though after a short while I turned it down to 10% volume, as I do with all games.

I selected the Ranger class (bow and arrow hunter) and enjoyed playing through the tutorial world quite a bit. I peaked into the next world as well having completed all the tutorial quests that do a reasonably good job of showing you the basics. That said, the controls are quite intuitive, so any experienced gamer is going to fall right into them straight away.

Combat is partly target based, partly twitch based, in the ability to roll and evade attacks, while maintaining a target lock. It felt a little clunky, bit only a little, and this is, after all, a 1 hour played review. I expect it'll improve as I get used to the mixed combat style.

All in all, first impressions are very good, and I expect I'll be logging quite a bit more time in this game. Will update review accordingly when appropriate.

*** 10 HOUR PLAYEDS - FIRST IMPRESSIONS *** 18 SEPTEMBER 2016

Well, 16 hours actually. Portal Knights is a very laid back sandbox game. In fact, if anything it's simply too easy, something the developers have acknowledged, and no doubt, the game could benefit from some difficulty settings.

Inventory management is another sore point for me, as the number of chests I need to hold all the loot I have, having progressed past the first of three major bosses, is getting a little tiresome. With no way to mark, sort or catalogue the contents of the crates, finding things in a dozen or more crates, or trying to put new loot into them (and into the same stacks as is already in the crates limited storage space) becomes an issue.

Finding the portal can also be a very hit and miss affair, particularly on a setting of "large islands" - I strongly recommned you select Small Universe - it'll save a great deal of hunting around for the next portal.

Beyond that, the game is a very laid back, casual sandbox experience, generally well crafted, with good graphics (especially considering the world is made up of blocks), a logical user interface that is very easy to get used to, and a music score that suits it well.

There's something on the order of 100 hours of content here if you play the game through on all three character classes, and that makes it's small price tag well worth a thumbs up rating.

This is a fun little game that is easily worth the $15 it costs. Combat is simple but fun with a nice dodge mechanic, building is simple and pretty intuitive with a nice block placing mechanism, and harvesting resources is pretty intuitive and simple. I would love to see the game futher expand its ideas and resource gathering, and maybe give me a reason to build a hefty fortress over a small house.
So far I've spent 9 hours in game and I haven't regretted it at all, unlike some other far more expensive games I recently bought...

PROS
- If Zelda: Wind Waker and Minecraft had a baby... a cute baby.
- Looks amazing. Cartoonish charm with shaders, lighting, etc
- Co-op with friends worked flawlessly, even in EA
- Building stuff... and the stuff built looks great
- lock-on targeting, Wind Waker style
- Devs making greats updates with things like NPCs, pets, etc. on the way as of now.
- 505 Games behind the Devs. This could be a 3D Terraria.

CONS
- combat lacks options right now
- loot drops are unfulling
- It's a little too easy right now but, then again, I'm not that far into the game.
- this game wasn't around when I was a kid.

*Here's two hours of early gameplay to sift through..

Fun until the new game feeling wears off. Combat is mostly spam clicking, you can pillar up a 3 or 4 blocks and most enemies can't hurt you. Worlds are pretty small, you can fully explore one above and below ground in about 20 minutes. The world generator needs some work. Visuallly the game looks great. The game doesn't have much depth though, probably better if you play multiplayer. Just to get fullscreen working you need to go into the game files and edit a .cfg file every time before you play. Doesn't give me much hope for the future of this game. I regret spending $15 on this.

As an Early Access Title
Done right. The updates are driven directly by player feedback, and the game stays playable in each iteration. Developer communication is active and transparent. Community creations are sometimes met with direct praise from staff, showing that they participate beyond simply taking feedback. These are people that care deeply about what they do.

As a Game
The core for a really good game is there, but I'm mostly watching the updates instead of playing now. The novelty of a Voxel RPG has worn off for me, and now I'm waiting for the polish and new features that will smooth out the parts that I don't like.

That being said, it's been 60+ hours of Voxel RPG fun so far. That's a lot more time than most voxel games hold my attention in a single binge.

There is one thing that I feel is really important to point out. The voxel mechanics and RPG mechanics are very tightly connected. You make potions (rpg mechanic) through a combination of rpg combat and farming (voxel mechanic). Your building and storage tools (voxel mechanic) are limitted by which worlds you've traveled to, which is limitted by the number of bosses you've killed. It's possible to play this as only an RPG or only a building game, but it is difficult and slow to do so. You will get things done a lot fast in both RPG world and Building world if you live in both, rather than just one.

It took some time getting used to since I play mostly Minecraft.

If you like Minecraft, Terraria, Dungeon Deffenders...you'll like this game.

Multiplayer does need to be worked on though.

It's a cool game. It runs smooth and has a lot of interesting features. It's just not my type of game, I can only play crafting / exploration games for a short amount of time before I get bored.

My only gripe with the game is it's repetitive with little depth. Find portal, gather resources, open portal. Rinse and repeat. That's just about it. Maybe I need to get farther into the game but after 5.5 hours, I didn't really think I needed to. I just moved onto other games.

If it goes on sale, I may pick up a copy or two to give to friends so I can play with people rather than by myself.

It's a fun game, but the extremely limited inventory space completely ruins it for me. And even if they did increase the player's inventory size, I feel like it still wouldn't be enough. What part of more do you not understand? I run out of inventory space constantly in this game.

I honestly don't understand why some developers limit the inventory sizes in some games. Having a small limited inventory doesn't add anything to a game. Except for making the game more difficult, in a bad way.

I suspect that the developers are experienced in making console games, because console games tend to have bad inventory systems... at least from my experience.
