What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Exanima is an important first step in our ambitious quest to create a new kind of RPG. We are a passionate independent developer who works closely with the community to deliver the best game we can without compromising our own vision. We are doing this thanks to crowd-funding and having reached the point where we have a playable and polished game, Early Access seems like a natural evolution and ideal platform.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Around six to nine months, give or take three months! Honestly, we can't provide an exact timeframe as there are many factors involved, some of which are beyond our control. These include feedback from a wider community and, ultimately, Exanima's success which will determine our budget going forward.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“While Exanima already feels like a complete game there are many defining features yet to be added and the current content represents an introductory stage to a larger, more open and varied setting. Exanima itself is a prelude to our even larger open world game Sui Generis, most features will make an appearance in both games bringing the scope of Exanima far beyond what it may appear to be now.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“After a successful Kickstarter campaign we have been developing the core game with the support and feedback of an amazing, passionate community. Exanima has already gone through alpha and beta stages with hundreds of testers and our focus has been on quality. It is absolutely playable, stable and highly optimised. While we have much more work ahead of us it already offers a complete and enjoyable experience.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The Early Access price is set at a point we think is fair for the game as it is now and respresents great value if you consider the features, content and polish that we intend to add. The release price may increase to reflect a more substantial and complete product. We will never charge for DLC or introduce any kind of RMT.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Exanima is part of a crowd funded project and as such community feedback has already played a significant role in its development. This is set to continue, both on our forums and here where we will actively engage the Steam Community. We will not only rapidly respond to bug reports but discuss ideas, take onboard constructive criticism, incorporate well thought out suggestions and prioritise our goals based on their input.”

Exanima 0.6.4.3 Released

We're working towards some major features to support the rest of the story content and bring it to its conclusion, these are not ready yet though so in the meantime we've expanded on the arena mode and core gameplay with some really big improvements.

Initially we focused on longer term goals, thinking we would add some skills and arena features for a nice intermediate update. When it came to adding these features however we found that they placed demands on our animation and other systems that they couldn't meet. This led to the most thorough and extensive overhaul of our animation system yet. Improving animation and gameplay has been a constant and often fruitless struggle from the first day of development. Realistically we'll never consider it truly finished, but this latest iteration has certainly brought them to a new level.

As usual, the update took longer than expected. We've got a lot of stuff that's almost done and we would have liked to include it, but we don't want to keep you waiting any longer. The current version should be stable and brings a lot of big improvements. Over the next few days we'll be releasing a series of smaller updates as the rest of the features and content are completed.

There's a few incomplete things still, notably the lack of ceilings in ogre matches can on rare occasion lead to an unfortunate death. We will correct this ASAP.

Here's the changelog for version 0.6.4.3:

  • Ogre matches in arena mode (more tiers coming)

  • New Close Combat skill technique: Dual Wield

  • New Shield skill technique: Synchrony

  • New Shield skill technique: Ward

  • New Shield skill technique: Persist

  • New Shield skill technique: Endure

  • New Shield skill technique: Mobility

  • Added shield block stamina mechanic

  • Added shield item statistics

  • Added merchant hireling NPC in arena mode

  • Hireling NPCs now come with various ranks and equipment

  • Many new items (more on the way)

  • Improved footwork and balance

  • Improved combat stances

  • Reworked all combat and most other animations

  • Improved parrying and blocking

  • Improved thrust accuracy and power

  • Improved action transitions and dynamic posing

  • Sped up recovery from falling

  • Various improvements and fixes to combat mechanics

  • Improved AI combat tactics

  • Improved NPC equipment choices

  • More variety in master level opponents

  • Gave AI more human-like use of controls

  • LtR swings are now easier to execute

  • Various graphical improvements

  • Analogue stick movement via XInput

  • Numerous bug fixes and improvements

About This Game

Explore, fight, survive and unravel mysteries in this unique and unforgiving 3D isometric RPG set in an original dark, low fantasy world. Exanima's exceptional attention to detail and realistic simulation of all things aim to provide a deeply immersive and dynamic gameplay experience.

Features include a deep skill based combat system, complex and smart AI, fully interactive environments, an advanced damage model with accurate collisions and locational protection, roguelike elements and an arena mode to hone your combat skills.

"Those who would enter the underworld shall not only forfeit their lives...
...but bring oblivion to all mankind."

WARNING: THIS GAME IS ACTUALLY DIFFERENT!

This game features a very deep, truly physics based combat system. This is not just some animation feature, it is a fundamental difference that is central to gameplay. Real momentum, forces and collisions are always at play here, every nuance of your inputs is crucial to the outcome. This will likely be unlike anything you've played before and may take some practice, but can be hugely rewarding and the skill cap is virtually infinite. It is not particularly fast paced or difficult but it does require you to pay attention, it is very tactical and just casually pressing buttons won't get you very far!

Our goal is to create a deep and immersive RPG world based on a more advanced simulation supporting an unprecedented level of dynamic and emergent gameplay. All of the technology we use including the game engine is our own, developed from the ground up to realise this vision.

Exanima is born as a prelude to Sui Generis (SG), our ambitious open world RPG that has been in development for over two years following a successful Kickstarter campaign. Exanima is a smaller yet complete game in its own right, a dungeon crawler that takes place in SG's Underworld some twenty years prior to its events. Both games are being developed in concert, many of SG's more ambitious features will make an appearance in Exanima as development continues.

Exanima provides a reasonably complete and meaningful game experience, but many more features are on their way! We have met our most challenging and significant development goals, now we are ready to bring new features to light and make an even more fun and compelling adventure. Here are some of the planned features, with many already being close to completion:

  • Per session and global character skill progression
  • Large non-linear main game following early content
  • Build and permanently save characters by completing early content
  • New encounters, items and environments
  • Ranged combat and new close quarter manoeuvres
  • Numerous moddable thaumaturgic powers
  • More complete arena game modes featuring outdoor arenas
  • Complex NPC interactions and dialogue
  • Cooperative and competitive LAN multiplayer

System Requirements

    Minimum:
    • OS: Windows XP (SP3)
    • Processor: Intel Core2 or AMD Athlon II dual core
    • Memory: 2 GB RAM
    • Graphics: Intel HD 4000 or AMD Radeon HD 2600 or Nvidia GeForce 8600 with 512MB VRAM
    • Storage: 2 GB available space
    • Sound Card: Integrated audio
    • Additional Notes: Wine / CrossOver compatible on Mac OS X or Linux with appropriate OpenGL driver
    Recommended:
    • Processor: 3 Ghz Intel Core i5 quad core or 3.5 Ghz AMD FX hex core or better
    • Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 5850 or Nvidia GeForce GTX 280 with 1GB VRAM or better
    • Additional Notes: Faster GPU with more VRAM recommended for very high settings or resolutions

Exanima is unique and yet will probably feel familiar for those of you who were playing hack'n'slash and cRPG during the late 90's early 2000's, the grim visuals and macabre atmosphere brings me way back and touch my feels in places I thought long dead.

I even felt unease and stress when walking these long pitchblack corridors, my torch in one hand, a barrel lid in the other, going deeper and deeper into darkness, from which anything could emerge and pounce at my face... and then ♥♥♥♥ goes wrong : panic-running back to the nearest fix source of light to draw my weapon and face it (or them), stumbling and falling on the way, I could die at any moment. And I did, and I will again. Because Exanima is hard !

It's hard and I love it ! The game is very challenging, it doesn't guide you, it doesn't help you nor pats you on the shoulder, it just kills your worthless peasant's butt ; it's up to you to take a stand and prove you're a fearless survivor and a talented fighter.

And that's another point I love about the game and the unique fighting mechanics : you're a nobody, you're not a hero who can finish his/her foes single-handedly, you need to be tactical, careful, cool headed and smart ; you have to keep your composure or else you WILL make costly mistakes and probably die. Surviving and progressing really feels rewarding ; even more considering checkpoints are scarce, but fair.

Controls are very different from anything I've played so far, it takes a bit to get used to, and hours to master (I'm far from having mastered them after 23h ingame, but getting there!). Under pressure it works magic : if you can't keep your calm your character will feel clumsy because of your lack of precision as a player.

Right now the game feels more like a (really good) Hack'n'slash, considering it's under development and the more RPG-y aspect of the game will bloom later. But it sure is going in the right direction.

Oh, and the Arena mod is a botomless pit of entertainment !

This game has more unpleasant hugs than a family reunion. Unlike a family reunion, you can use those aggressive hugs for murder.

A game with realistic (like) combat, cool weapons and armor. The modes currently included are fun. Game isn't finished but has great potential. Is probably already worth the price especially if you like these kinds of games.

This game is too much fun for my own good.

Hardcore, refreshing, and incredibly satisfying.

Every day I scrap up some in game cash to throw some cronies at a troll with a giant claymore, only to watch them be eviscerated in around a minute's time.

I found out about this game through a youtuber Skallagrim https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATydHniqe78&list=PLxClq4a6GD73IK3iXnjle1p3qCPMQx2EU&index=27
I watch a lot of things about medievil combat and such on his channel.
He demonstrated some of the gameplay, with his own impression as i believe he practices HEMA, he was saying it had the closest to real swordplay he had seen in a game.
5 min in and i was hooked OMG this is fun.
I purchased the game while it was still in the VERY early stages.
Seen game progress and see that devs still make additions to the game.

I LOVE just about every aspect of the game.

Bottom line: if you like medievil combat RPGs with zombies skeletons Demons Golems lvling practical skills and random books n scrolls that sometimes tell their own story, get this ♥♥♥♥. ITS NO HACK N SLASH THIS GAME TAKES SKILLS OR AT THE VERY LEAST TACT.

These guys have a great concept here. The combat is just fantastic once the player gets a handle on it. There are basically three modes of play. A quest/journey type mode where the player navigates dungeons in search of keys and collecting items. An arena mode where a player must gain coin by participating in matches and a practice mode where one can hone their combat skills.

I wish the arena mode had an option that allowed the player to keep equipment from downed opponents as the existing mode only allows buying gear from a store. In the arena mode's existing format it simply takes too long to get interesting equipment and fight your way to the top.

The developers are also working on another game based on the same engine and physics play. This game looks to be even more promising with outdoor maps and a potentially deeper story line.

The most enjoyable part of this game for me is the combat and ridiculous combinations of armor and weapons you can outfit on your character. e.g duel weilding maces in just underware and a belt.

Would be great to see dismemberment and coop.

After hours of playing. I can confidently say that I am satisfied with my purchase of this game. Imagine if a game with clunky as hell combat (like Mount & blade) had a baby with a unforgiving difficult game (like dark souls) and this is the game you get.

So what's the story? Honestly, I'm not sure. As a proctor, I'm investigating the dissapearance of somebody in this dungeon, and that's all you're told when you start. Much like Dark Souls, experiencing the story is up to you, as most of it is found in journals, and parchments. Often times, it's easy to miss important notes. I will say though that this mystery adds substantially to the interest of the game. You will see rooms in the game that are pretty interesitng. "What's with this planning room?" "Is this some sort of council room". You will find yourself trying to put the pieces together with the story, and I found that kind of fun.

More importantly, the gameplay is what is fun about this game. I will say though that it can be very frustrating in the beginning, and learning to fight takes patience in this game. Once you learn to fight though, the game can be really fun. I reccomend trying out the Arena for practice. It iwll make you better at the campaign, and half the experience is in the Arena. The combat uses ragdoll physics. Your character can get hung up on stuff like chairs, walls, doors, weapon racks, and will also trip over these things if you run into them at full speed.

Exanima is a dark game, and at some times can be creepy. this mixes really well with the tense combat, as you know anything can be a threat. Anything can kill you, and anything can jump into the fight to team up and can kill you. Often times you won't even see enemies coming because when I say this game is "dark" I mean it literally. Without a torch you are doomed.

Now on to some negative stuff. You can spend 10+ hours on this game, and have your character end up in a situation of being totally doomed. For example, if you first/main character dies in Arena, you have to start all over again. Or how about in campagin, there are no potions. You can take what is called "Lethal damage" This damage covers your yellow health bar in red. This damage is never recovered. There are 3 salves that will heal this damage all the way spread out accross the 5 floors that are playable right now. What if you lose your torch? You can't see anything (and this will happen at level 5 btw) you can either walk blind in the dark, let yourself die, and come back to life in your torch (which is a big set back) or you can find this "Special item" hidden in a secret door in level 3 that let's you see in the dark.

There's also quite a few mazes, and timed switch doors. Personally, I did not find these parts fun. a lot of the time, the game doesn't acknowledge me clicking the levers, and I have to stop my forward motion to pull them, creating a frusterating experience.

You can interact with items in this game a feature that I loved in games in Skyrim, and it's a weclome addition to this game). Often times, you can use this item interactions in puzzles. For example, take a plank of wood, lay it over a trap door. Press a button to open a gate on the other side as the trap door falls open, the walk accross the plank. I think this was a really cool part of the game. Item palcement tended to be slightly difficult, and sometimes items would refuse to cooperate with me, and not allow me to play them in certain areas.

I should also point out that the updates for this game are slow as molassis. There's been 11 updates in the past year. And the most recent one as of this review was just a week ago. Before that, there had not been an update since May. Thankfully, they do add a lot in these updates, but they are coming rather slowly.

In the end, due to this games addictive gameplay, creepy dungeons, fun combat (once you're good at it), in addition to it's item interactions, I have to reccomend this game. Updates for this game don't come often, but I will say that's because this small studio is working on a second game that seems very similar to Exanima. however, the updates are *big* when they do happen, and I can't wait for the next one, and I can't wait for their next game.

This game is nicely done and the attention to detail is amazing! While the dungeon crawling is in my opinion the way its susposed to be done, but what I found the most surprising fun is the arena. It's still bare bones for the most part, but even in its early stages its highly addictive, and does makes the solo aspect of the game better because you can actually survive longer. I have yet to find a bow and arrow yet, and I'd love to see magic in this game, because the melee is really really good! Worth the $15.00 for an early access game experience

I really enjoy the arena practice mode - it's a lot of fun learning the fighting physics that are so unique to this game. That said, the broader stuff, the actual game and the actual arena mode, and anything that doesn't immediately involve the physics based fighting game, still remains pretty opaque to me. I will continue to play it, especially as I continue to use the arena practice mode, but I hope that a little more thought is put into properly guiding the player through the more sophicated parts of the game where the supposed meat of the game is. Still recommended on the strength of the arena practice mode alone.

Absolutely amazing game! Truly unique in its' purely physics driven combat.

It's definitely worth the money and it's an awesome experience to smash someones' face in with a heavy maul.

It's pretty hard to learn at first but once you get into it, you too will feel that satisfaction of hearing your enemies go "AAAAUGHGHH!!" as you crush every bone in their body.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I was pretty shocked at how entertaining this game is. I didn't think I'd like it that much when I first bought it. Turns out I really enjoy it, and can't wait for the full release. The controls were a little awkward to grasp at first, and they felt clunky, but when you get used to them I find they actually add quite the depth to the game. Only thing that could make this game better to me? Multi-player. With mechanics this deep, it is begging for some sort of PvP. Possibly some co-op and perhaps a survival mode where you can baricade rooms and the likes, while things get harder the longer you go on.

And in a perfect world, this would release with a toolset, and able to host small servers between 20-50 players. But that is just what I would want. I doubt many others would agree.

This is everything I've wanted for an RPG type game. This makes me EXTREMELY excited for the release of Sui Generis. Updates to the game seem steady, and I can tell a pretty big difference from the last one. The way you layer armor is really cool, and is actually spot on as far as terminology and actual medieval armor goes. It does get a little confusing as to which layer goes where sometimes. No game crashes, not many bugs that I've experienced, and the Arena mode is highly addicting.

Can't recommend enough, on combat alone even, could only be better if there was some more integrated help to learn the finer points. Main dungeons (that I've survived so far to see at least) are great, some puzzlers & traps that nearly put me off but the way they were integrated into the games physics really forces you to put yourself in the PCs shoes and solve them in some interesting & satisfying ways.

Some important mechanics don't seem to be well explained (Double click = the magic button fyi, looting stuff, overhead strikes, using the various keys you'll pick up...) which led to a bit of frustration, basically the player could use a little more/more accessible information on game mechanics. A little more clarity there would go a long way I think.

Overall the most interesting & actually fun new RPG I've played in a long while, the gritty low fantasy setting, genuinely challenging but not overbearing/frustrating difficulty (again, from what I've seen so far!) & the satisfying & unique combat system make this well worth the purchase & your patience. Can't wait to see it complete and this IP expanded in Sui Generis :)
