Do you miss the ol'good times of the Sega Genesis?
Do you also miss the golden years of Sonic The Hedgehog?

Well... This is better than that.

Enter Freedom Planet. A indie game who despite its deceiving looks.. could very well destroy its competition with its engaging and fun gameplay reminiscing from the old genesis era. Awesome soundtrack, Lovable characters (Milla bein my favorite) and a simple yet fun adventure ideal for all gamers to try out. Not to mention the replay value and the enticing easter eggs you find along the way make it have more value than its price is worth. Definitely worth to spawn a franchise that i'd surely look forward to play from now on. Highly recommend!

A fantastic display and addicting gameplay that's easy to learn and a lifetime to master. Unique levels, superb story and voice acting! If that's not your thing, classic mode is also fantastic in that option. The soundtrack is 100% worth it. Get use to unique levels and assets every level along the way. I can't praise it enough. The only hookups I can think of is that the controls can be a bit dodgy when trying to switch from keyboard to gamepad, or vice versa, but its quick to fix and forget about. Adventure mode cinematics can take up a lot of time, but again, If you don't like it, you can always skip them, or play the classic mode and forgo them entirely. If you're looking for something new and interesting, or are a fan of this type of side scrolling action game, you won't walk away dissapointed. I don't often type reviews, but this is as honest and non-biased I can be about it. I hope everyone who endulges can enjoy this.

This has been on my wishlist for a short while, and was gifted to me as a raffle prize from a wonderful community.

What can I say about this game that isn't already obviouse? It's a 16-bit esque side-scrolling adventure game. Need I say more?

Well.....I kinda have to, because just that alone doesn't do the game justice at all. It's 100% ♥♥♥♥ing amazing! Time to break it down.
(scale 1-5)

Gameplay - 5: Simply put, this game is FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN! Pinkie Pie herself wouldn't be able to put it down (yes, I will use pony references sometimes, abiet, not often). This game combines the speed of Sonic the Hedgehog, the enemy trouncing of SMB (defeating them by landing on their heads mechanic), and normal brawling attacks of any beat-em-up out there. Not big on any kind of special moves, but the charge dash feature allows for wall-to-wall climbing. The action is fast-paced and never seems dull. You will find familiar power-ups akin to Sonic. Most of this game borrows mechanics heavily from the Sonic universe, including air bubbles and shields, but that's not a bad thing here. The life meter is a huge welcome over one-hit kills or 1 ring level rushing. There's also at least one other character you can select from in the very beginning of the game (as of this writing, that's all I can confirm right now) with the possibility of other playable characters, and, from the looks of it, might play a little differently. I will update this review to reflect on that when I use at least the other initial selectable character.

Controls - 4.75: The controls are absolutely perfect and customizable, however, the .25 knock is only because the keyboard controls might put some people off. In this day and age, side-scrollers DEMAND controllers, but the keyboard does work fairly well. Best with a controller, but the only small gripe I have is you need to go to the options menu in order to activate controller controls (at least, I had to do that before my 360 wired gamepad would work). Other than that, the controls are just about as flawless as you can get from a game like this.

Graphics - 5: Now, I know a 16 bit era esque game isn't going to look the best compared to other games, but it DOESN'T NEED TO HAVE ALL THE FLASH OF TODAY'S GAMES TO LOOK FANTASTIC! The graphics do an amazing job with the environment details and hazards abound. The character models move fluidly and are very well designed. The hit detection is spot-on perfect, so you never feel like you missed a hit on an enemy as the hit boxes are exactly where they need to be put. Colors spewed across the levels are vibrant and bright where they need to be, and dark and gloomy in the undergound areas without feeling like it's too dark to see any action.

Sound - 4: This may seem like a slight to steep hit, but let me explain a few things before you rant off about this score. The music is simply amazing and each level will have you nearly moving to the beat of the music while you blaze through the level. HOWEVER, the voice acting seems a bit forced. I will say the voices do fit the characters very well, but sometimes, the acting itself feels a little forced. Sound dapeners and effects, such as reverbs would have worked. The clean microphone recordings are great and all, but when it calls for maybe a bit of gritty work, it sounds too clean at points. There are a few times when you might find the voices a bit robotic and maybe a bit monotone, but don't let this stop you. The voice work is good, just needs a bit more work. This is the only bite I will take from all this.

The bottom line: 4.85: Fans of side-scrollers will find tons to love about this game. Small nuances aside, I had to pull myself away from the action to write this review. This was BEGGING to be written as soon as possible. I put Freedom Planet up there with Super Mario Bros., Sonic the Hedgehot (Genesis era, because the newer Sonics are killing the mascot), and Shantae (can't get enough BUTT WIGGLES and hair-whipping action). All in all, there's lots to be loved here. The challenge never feels extremely difficult, but not a walk in the park either. Collectables strewn across each level and challenging boss battles make this game appealing to just about anyone looking for a good trip back down memory lane or an introduction of what Sonic could have continued becoming. If a sequel ever does come out (not sure how the story ends as of this writing, so not sure if it's open ended for one), I'd definitely like to see more and any welcomed improvements.

Freedom Planet is overall one of the best games I have ever seen.

I would definitely recommend it to any gamer in general, because of the amount of variety and oddity that it contains! There are even many secrets to find, including easter eggs in the form of bloopers, which I should admit is really cool.

There are two gamemodes: Adventure and Classic.
So if you just want core gameplay, choose Classic.
If you want both story and gameplay, then choose Adventure!

In my opinion, I would actually prefer this over Undertale.
This soundtrack even puts the soundtrack of Undertale to shame!

Well, that's all I can think of.
Oh yeah, Timtams currency exchange program.
Okay, bye!

it's fun, i like that you can skip the story mode cutscenes because i just want to play the game without watching the plot. one nitpick is that the levels are a bit too long, so i get a bit tired when playing them

A lot of people are comparing this to Sonic, but as someone who doesn't like classic Sonic I can confirm that this game is amazing anyway. It definitely has elements from Sonic, but does a lot of new things as well. For example: actual combat instead of killing everyone in one hit with the only attack you have (which makes especially boss fights a lot more fun, but regular stages as well), a great story (at least in my opinion), a lot of different cool special abilities, much better level design (again in my opinion, either way it's different), and a lot of other stuff that I can't think of right now (I'd probably have to play more classic Sonic to see all the stuff that's different but I really don't want to) but that's okay because I think I made my point anyway. Each of these things still make the game very different from Sonic, despite the similarities.

Also I love the character designs and the characters and the story and the music and everything really.

Non-Gameplay Pros:
-Well-designed characters
-Great voice acting
-Lighthearted, but with some surprising dark undertones
-Simple, yet interesting story
-One of the less toxic communities of recent indie games
-THE SOUNDTRACK IS HEAVENLY
-So good, it's getting a sequel

Non-Gameplay Cons:
-People who haven't played it may accuse it of being a "furry game."

Gameplay Pros:
-Fantastic level design
-Fast-paced gameplay
-Each dfficulty mode actually feels different
-Different characters add replay value
-Smooth difficulty curb
-Well-made boss fights
-Tons of secrets to find
-Designed perfectly for both speedrunners and casual players
-Achievements are very creative and challenging

Gameplay Cons:
None

Overall, this title is a perfect homage to the classic Sonic games, and even surpasses them in some areas. Its gameplay feels very similar, while still managing to be unique by bringing many new things to the table. And while I may get frustrated sometimes (*cough cough* Trap Hideout *cough cough* Final Dreadnought 2 as Milla *cough cough*), I always end up coming back for more. This game gets a solid 10/10 from me.

Amazing game, colorful environments, fast-paced action and a game i would recommend for sonic fans.
The bosses are on the scale of Gunstar Heroes & Alien Soldier. The playable characters have their own unique playstyles
The game has plenty of replay value especially if you're an achievement hunter. Only gripe I have is that I personally wasn't the biggest fan of the story, but the voice acting was good.. The game is very challenging and fun, highly recommended.

Pros: The game-play is fun, the music is great, and the pixel art is amazing. Cons: The plot is bad, it's really bad, the voice-acting isn't that good, and the three main characters are Lilac the dragon even though she looks nothing like a dragon, Lilith from Dreamkeepers, and Milla the mimiga. Result: freedom planet is an alright game it's just fun to play, listen, and look at. but the plot and characters aren't really good. so for people who don't care about plot this game is for you, but if you really like plot in a game... think about it. Game-play lovers: 8/10 - Plot lovers: 6/10

And they rip off Cave Story at one part of the story, just saying.

Play classic mode.

There is over 2500 positive reviews, soo this will be short.

One thing which surprised me most of all in this platformer, is perfectly ramped difficulty. First levels are made for sightseeing beauty of pixel graphics, meanwhile the later ones can cover up whole area with enemies. No kidding, I cant remember if I ever saw 20-30 enemies at once on one screen, its just ridiculous for a platformer genre. The only thoughts which were coming to my mind were: "Run, fast!" - Missing out 75% of unlockable goodies.

I have to mention soundtrack. GalaxyTrail done their homework top-notch, leaving no space for error. When there is need, everything is pumping with energy. My favorite themes will be "Major Boss Battle", "Fortune Night" and "Prince Dail Battle". Freedom Planet has great universe it is unique and well thought. I cant wait to see what they will plan for sequel.

This is a fantastic game. Not sure if I'd consider it one of my favorites of all time, but it's definitely up there. I made it a goal of mine to play this game in 2016 due to the annoucment of the sequel and I'm glad I did (although, I played it on Wii U first before I played it on Steam). I'm very much looking forward to Freedom Planet 2.

Ah, truly a gem, among indie games! Let me tell you something, about "Freedom Planet".

To be honest, this game was originally meant to be a "Sonic" fan game, but it decided to go on the direction, of being a more original game, inspired by it, in addition to other games with the "anthropomorphic video game heroes" theme, in platformers! It gives a similar feel of nostalgia to such games, due to it's gameplay, but neverless, I could imagine what it would be like, if this game was a independently released, third-party "Sega Genesis" title.

There are 3 notable female characters, that are playable. Lilac, (the main heroine, of whom is a dragon) Carol, (a wildcat of whom rides a motorcycle, and is Lilac's best friend) and finally, my most favorite of them, Milla. (A basset hound...and she's also the most ADORABLE character, in the game!) Each playable character, has different specialties, in skills!

Would I reccomend this? YES! For $14.99, you are going to have a MUCH better deal, than you ever will, with those terrible, licensed "Sonic Boom" video games. (Especially with the worst of them being "Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric", for the Wii-U, which is NOT worth playing. Also, the cartoon they made, was FAR better, anyway!)

Also, this game definitely isn't exclusive, to Steam; in fact, it's available, on other platforms to! Notably, it's also available, for the Wii-U and the PlayStation 4! (But as a downloadable title.)

Attention all "Wii-U" owners, if you find a copy of "Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric", pretend it never existed, and instead, buy "Freedom Planet" from the Nintendo Network! I can promise you, that you'll have a better time, with this; regardless of what age, you are!
