What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“SoundStage is one of the first music tools on the Vive, and we want to know how you use the product. Join our Early Access campaign, dive in, and tell us what new features you want to see.

Based on your feedback, we will change and re-prioritize the feature list for the 1.0 release.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We’re tentatively planning to exit Early Access toward the end of this year.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“There will be at least 10 more instruments at launch, including a live sampler, laser show, and microphone. Additional features are also planned for the full version, including the ability to add your own samples and sharing scenes with others.

In both cases, we will modify the list of features and instruments based on community feedback.

We will also continue general polish and optimization.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“SoundStage is fully functional with 10+ feature-complete instruments:
  • Keyboard
  • Drum
  • Sampler
  • Maraca
  • 3D Theremin
  • Speaker
  • Sequencer
  • Oscillator / LFO (Low-Frequency Oscillator)
  • Recorder
  • Splitter
  • Mixer

You can build, save, and load creations. If you ever wonder how an instrument works, just select an instrument's tool tip to learn more about it. Sick of the tooltips? Turn them on or off using the main menu.

SoundStage begins with a pre-built scene so you can just start jamming, as well as see how instruments are put together.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“After Early Access, the price will probably increase, and additional instrument packs will be sold as DLC.

During Early Access, the price may increase as more instruments and features are added.

Anyone who participates in Early Access will have access to all features and DLC through the end of the year.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The community steers what features and instruments are prioritized for our 1.0 release. You want something? Just tell us, and we will try our best to get it on the roadmap.

As we build new features, we'll release them to the community for immediate use and feedback.”

SoundStage Update 03: Copy/Paste! Unlimited Saves! Cameras! And much more!

Thanks again for supporting SoundStage. If you have a second, I would really appreciate it if you wrote a short review on Steam - it is one of the best ways to support indie devs.

The third update is now live! We have three new instruments and a vastly improved sampler, but I think the real stars of this update are the non-instrument additions. Here is the update list:

  • Unlimited save slots
  • Save/load preview
  • Copy/paste
  • Wire settings
  • Audio speed/quality settings
  • MP3 sample support
  • Binaural audio (off by default)
  • Background toggle
  • Improved sampler
  • Reverb instrument
  • Microphone instrument
  • Camera instrument
Here are details for each...

Unlimited save slots
Save and load as many setups as you'd like. They are stored in a folder that you can open from the desktop view. Feel free to rename them or add your friends' files to this folder - they will then show up next time you open the save/load menu.

Please note that if you want your old saves, you need to move them (the .xml files) from the root game folder to the "saves" folder.

Save/load preview
When you select a file to save or load, you get a 3D graphic preview of it so you can decide whether that is the correct file before confirming or canceling the selection.

Copy/paste
Duplicate an instrument by grabbing it with the grip buttons on your controller (the squeeze ones on the handle). Just use the grip instead of the trigger, and it'll pull out a copy of the instrument with the settings preserved.

Wire settings
Change the appearance of the wires - curved (original), straight, or invisible. The curves are remembered, so you can switch back at any time. It is a global setting.

Audio settings
The "AUDIO SETTINGS" menu has two options - speed/quality and binaural.

Speed/Quality Settigns
For users who are having less responsive drums, increase the speed/quality setting and see if that helps. The quality setting is just the size of the audio buffer so lower quality means you might hear more glitches in a complex scene.

Binaural Settings
You can turn on spatialized audio for just the Speaker instrument or for all instruments. Please note that binaural audio takes computer power so you may experience slow downs or audio glitches if you have too many binaural audio sources. Give it a go, and if you experience issues, just turn it back off!

Display/SFX settings
The "DISPLAY/SFX Options" menu has the following options:
  • HI RES DESKTOP VIEW: Improves the resolution of the desktop's first-person view
  • HIDE ENVIRONMENT: Kills the sky and mountains so you are performing against black
  • MUTE ENVIRONMENT: Kills the background environment sound
  • METRONOME CLICK: Adds a metronome click sound to the metronome
Improved sampler
Beyond now supporting MP3 files, the sampler features the following new controls:
  • Scrubbing by touching the waveform and holding down the trigger
  • Head/tail control by grabbing the bars at either end of the waveform and dragging
  • Play/Back buttons for controlling playback
  • Loop switch to control whether playing the sample is a loop or one-shot

Microphone instrument
Plays live input. Please note you can only have one of these in a setup. Trying to spawn a second will just delete the first one.

Reverb instrument
Adds a reverb effect to the incoming signal. Slide the disc up and down to control intensity of the effect. The dial controls the mix between the dry (original) and wet (FX) signal.

I'm not quite happy with the look of the reverb instrument, so I might revisit its aesthetic in the next update...

Camera instrument
You can now see yourself! To broadcast the camera to the desktop, toggle it "on" with the button on back. Or you can send a pulse to the control input (so you can turn it on at a distance).

So there you go! Thanks again for playing SoundStage - your feedback is always appreciated.

SoundStage Update 02: The XyloRoll (and more!)

Thanks for continued support. If you're enjoying SoundStage, please leave a review on Steam - it would mean the world to me.

The second update is now live! We have three and a half new instruments, improvements, and bug fixes.

New Instruments
The star of this update is the XyloRoll - a combination of the keyboard, a xylophone, and a piano roll.

You can now make sequences of notes to play back on a keyboard-like device. The keys are larger and more spaced out for easier live play. As it's inspired by a xylophone, I've even included mallets that you can pick up and bang on the keys if that is more your style.

Two other new instruments--the TouchPad and Valve.

The TouchPad is essentially a drum but with a button form-factor, so you can trigger samples or the sequencer with the "press" of a button.

The Valve is a single input/output device with an on/off switch and a volume control so you can quickly toggle a signal on and off without a full-blown mixer.

The Splitter has also been updated to be a Merger, as well. It now has a switch on the side that flips between MERGING 2 signals into 1 and SPLITTING 1 signal into 2.

Improvements
Per popular request, you can now start and stop the sequencer by sending a signal into the new input on the top. Daisy chain sequencers together or start/stop them with the new touchpad (or drum).

Buttons are now "pressable" while the controller trigger is held down. So you can hold down the controller's trigger and toggle many cubes on the sequencer at once!

One last major improvement - collision detection is way more accurate. No more accidentally hitting three keyboard keys at the same time!

Bug Fixes
Just two this update:
  • Volume slider on mixer smoother - no discontinuities
  • Custom samples stay in the sampler when save

Thanks again for playing SoundStage - your feedback is always appreciated.

This is is simply the best music app in VR. It is not a game or a DAW replacement, but an infinite number of sound studios.

Pros:
Cheap - This much audio gear would cost you millions.
Huge - So many possible combinations of gear which can be saved and revisited
Diverse - interesting intruments and effects can be chained to create awesome sounds
Evolving - the dev is very responsive and updates have been both big and fast.
Complex - This a pro and a con. There is a lot to learn, like any new music production software. Luckily the dev is producing a series of helpful youtube guides and responds to questions.

Cons:
Slow - it would be difficult to use for live instrumental performance without a patient audience or a lot of preconfigured set ups.
Unfinished - This is early access, it is clearly unfinished and in some cases unoptimised. The mic seems to have a slight delay on subsequent tracks.
Hardware limited - Inherits the limitations of the platform, instruments are like playing with one finger on each hand and the headset microphone is not that great.

Summary:
There are many things I'd like to see added, like pedal support and easier live looping, but it is an amazing concept and the development trajectory has been seriously impressive so far. I could easily see myself sinking hundreds of hours into this once complete.

I wrote a short review but then I was telling a friend about what I made in SoundStage so I'm replacing my review with that

made a pretty sweet SoundStage(tm) today
set up a 5/4 sequencer, a two measure 6/8, a two measure 4/4, and a 27 beat xyloroll
dan deaconish sound largely attained
even recorded my voice (mic added in latest update) and sped it up
would be cool if it had "building the scene" playback like tiltbrush

that's pretty cool
squirrel effect go

well, not an identical eeect
effect
since it was also shortening the sample
i tried doing a bass beat but it sounded dumb so i sped it up and used it as a noice
which in that context must mean nice noise

noice

i set out to make something that mixed time signatures and to make it quickly
and in the process found that soundstage is really great for translating sounds in your head to reality
probably the greatest musical instrument to date?
it still needs something more scripty, i feel
not sure how to make something... longer
but the component design is already so good and fun

SoundStage is an impressive concept that actually delivers. At first I took it to be just a toy, but after updates and a lot more time spent with different musicians and novices it has revealed it's true proof-of-concept to me. This is the first time emulated hardware has ever been so directly represented in a digital space, much less a virtual one. You think of your 'Reason' softwares (sorry if that's a way out of date rack software, that's the only one I know form back in the day) that emulate beat machines and samplers and whatnot, but this is a step up. Being able to grab them and move them around and pull plugs to connect them is incredibly efficient, effective, and immersive. Building your digital sample tape rack that you pull out and then punch into the samplers is fantastic. For the price you'd be insane not to buy it if you own a Vive. Even if you just want to dabble, it's really easy to enjoy. It makes so much sense to anyone that touches it within minutes. Some VR stuff gets me hyped for the future of creative softwares and this is some of that stuff right up there with Tilt Brush.

Product received for free
SoundStage is a shining example of non-game uses for virtual reality. I'm no musician but am very interested in creative applications on the Vive. SoundStage is a very engaging music creation platform with synthesizers, samplers, sequencers and electronic percussion instruments available in your room scale space. You can surround yourself with instruments and jam until you find yourself dancing to the beats you created yourself.

Fantastic application at a reasonable price point.

This is the music creation program you've been waiting for!

The good stuff:
- Easy to understand UI
- Plug and play instruments
- Fun and experimental toys
- Resizable, moveable, sound customizable drums! My favorite! The reaction time is excellent!
- You'll spend hours just playing with the maracas! So cool!
- Intuitive! Which is amazing considering everything this software can do!

Now for the bad stuff:
- I hate having to hold the trigger down to hang onto a drumstick or maraca. The Vive triggers are known to get sticky with use. Constantly holding them down can't be good for the hardware. Besides, it doesn't feel right.

- Needs spatial audio.

I give this one a 9/10 as an early access rating! Excellent work so far!

One word. EPIC!!!! My husband is a musician. I bought this for him not really knowning if he would like it or not, and if not, at least its only $10 and I might have some fun with it. Well, He LOVED it. He is a drummer and created an epic Drum set. I tried it and could have messed around in it for HOURS if he didn't make to go to bed. One request would be for the "recorder" to actaully record unlimited audio though. Right now it only does a short sample loop. Also, being able to change the background would be kinda cool!!!! I'll be making a video gameplay today!

This game, more of a music application really, is so much fun! I have much experience in composing electronic music and if electronic music is for you then this is the single most fun way of making music you can come across. Making a drum set spanning your entire room scale is quite the experience.. especially when you start to explore beyond that with samples.

This dev is also amazing. I had a crazy bug where the menu wouldn't pop up to customize the sound stage. While nobody else seemed to be having it, I contacted the dev and they fixed my bug and pushed the update to steam in less than a week.

HIghly recommend this game if you like making music.

An excellent DJ and melody composition playground, way more fun than I expected!

Nice tools, very accessible, fun and with great art direction. It's lightweight and always runs well.

However, don't expect a real digital audio workstation. You can use this to mess around and experiment, then if you are a musician you'll still do the heavy lifiting outside of this, for now...

It took me a little while to get comfortable piecing all the things together but I'm now completely and utterly hooked. I have lost myself in here for several multi-hour sessions now just noodling about. Can't wait to see what the developer has up their sleeve as they continue development!

SoundStage is an example of how VR can be so much more than just wave shooters. If you are any good at music, you are going to be able to make some pretty funky beats in this game.

Highly recommend. Even to experience the interactions which the developer really nailed really well.

I have very little time in this so far, but was instantly impressed by the interface. Seriously, when i was a kid, this would have cost thousands of dollars to get in to. WY, i guess it still cost a couple thousand since i had to build the vr setup. But still, seriously, this thing is going to be huge for artists.

SoundStage is incredibly fun, even if you only use it as a virtual drumset so that you can bang on them and make lots of noise. It's shaping up to be a very legitimate DAW! At the current development rate, I could see it being worth well over $100 US in a year or maybe even six months.

One word of warning: Do NOT make a massive speaker that's bigger than your whole body and then send bass through it. It'll be like the beginning of Back to the Future.

This is a program that is going to keep me coming back for a long time. Also, it's great to see that the dev has been really active about getting feedback from the users. It seems that he really takes the feedback to heart and updates frequently. I really hope that this program becomes viable for use in an actual live DJ set. How cool would that be to see your DJ in the booth with a headset on and his visuals projected behind him on a big screen while all of his mixing is done in VR?! In its current state I don't think that can be done but I have high hopes for this.

I recommend that anyone with a passing interest in DJing or even music in general to give this a try. I didn't know the first thing about DJing or mixing music but now I've already been learning the basics on youtube/reddit and I think it's going to be a fun hobby. With a few added features like being able to match the bpm of one track to another I could see this taking off and being able to replace thousands of dollars worth of equipment.

Soundstage shows that VR is best situated between games and apps. A musical Sandbox you can build around yourself. Every interaction feels natural and fun. The creator also seems to improve it frequently with updates. Dance like you can see no one!
