Magicite v2.0 Released!

Magicite v2.0 (Final Update)

Hey all! I know it's been 10 years since the last update but here it is. I went through all of the code and cleaned up a bunch of things, making the game run smoother in both single player and multiplayer. I've also added the final companion unlock as well as a brand new mode!

-Added Madman Mode (Warning: Only for strong-willed Magicite Veterans!)
-Added 4th Age Droid [New Companion]
-Trees/Ores/Bugspots/Itemstands/Enemies/etc. now drop items LOCALLY for every player, lessening the network load a ton and also makes sure everyone gets an equal amount of loot!
-EXP/Gold are also dropped locally as well, making network a lot smoother.
-You can now select your traits rather than having to pray to RNGesus.
-Added various sound effects.
-Added awesome new Inventory/Crafting textures.
-Inventory can be opened with R or TAB keys.
-You can't spam W to skip biomes wtf u cheaters.
-Spirit Race stats have been changed from [HP+5, ATK+15] to [HP+7, ATK+3]
-Optimized networking code a lot more.
-Mysterious Potion now heals for 10 HP, 10 Mana, or just throws a poison vial.
-Big Mysterious Potion now heals for 15 HP, 15 Mana, or just throws a poison vial.
-Laser Crossbow no longer only deals 1 damage.
-Wooden Club now gives 18 ATK.
-Fairies now have 90 hp, 4 atk, and move faster.
-Throwing Axe now deals half damage.
-Flame of Hope now only gives you 1 point to a random stat upon levelling up.

Thank you all so much for the support for my games. Magicite was my very first PC game that I made when I was a junior in college, and I never thought it would achieve such a massive following. It exceeded my wildest dreams and solidified my passion for the world of indie game development.

BUT it also threw me into a crazed depression for quite a bit of time.

This is the final update for Magicite. As a 1 man dev team I need to move on to bigger and better things. It's okay if you hate me for it, and as I've said before on reddit and on Steam, I'll always provide refunds to players who feel that they've been cheated of their money regardless of playtime on Steam. YOU as the player should hold all of the power over us developers, and it is our job to make games that are fun and worth their price tag.

But guys I can't work on this game anymore. I need to grow as a game developer and I need to challenge myself with new ideas. There could be 100 more updates made to Magicite and I could keep refining it into better and better versions of itself, but it would still just be Magicite. I would be miserable. I've learned so much during the past couple of years and I'm itching to flex my programming and art skills a little more. For my sanity, I NEED to pursue my new ambitious ideas.

So I hope for $9.99, $4.99, or whatever you've paid for Magicite, it has been worth it. I've watched tons of your guys' videos on youtube and I've seen the heart-pounding chaotic fun in my dangerous world of Deephaven. I hope these moments hold a special place in your heart, because they certainly do for me.

So really, thank you so much again for your support. I hope to impress all of you with the big projects I have planned in the coming years.

Love,
-Sean

P.S. Please post any new bugs from this update since I'm good at making them. I'll be releasing hotfixes over the next couple of days.

About This Game

Explore, craft, and survive in this Multiplayer RPG Platformer with permanent death! Featuring many Rogue-like elements, Magicite randomly generates each underground dungeon for you and your friends to delve deep into. Chop trees, mine ores, and hunt beasts in order to collect the resources and materials you need to survive the harsh and unforgiving environment. With a ton of character traits, stats, companions, and classes, players will have a different experience each play through! Be prepared to die... A LOT.

Magicite's main influences were Monster Hunter and Spelunky. I loved the resource collection and crafting in Monster Hunter, and of course fighting giant monsters with my friends. Spelunky's brutal yet rewarding platforming was also something that I wanted to capture with Magicite.

Features:
  • Randomly Generated Dungeons - Experience a new dungeon each time you play. Expect tons of trees to chop, ores to mine, plants to harvest, and bugs to catch! Oh and giant monsters.
  • Permanent Death - The game logs all of your stats in a play through, leading the way for achievements and upgrades.
  • Crafting System - Combine any two items to create a new one! For example, Wood + Wood = Plank. There are tons of combinations to discover!
  • Combat System - If you plan on just running in and swinging you sword, you're gonna get wrecked. Take time to craft useful items and examine enemy positioning before executing a well timed attack.
  • Unlockable Races, Hats, & Companions - The more you play, more greater chance you'll unlock awesome new hats with a variety of special effects. Races and Companions can also be unlocked to provide different starting items and stats!
  • Multiplayer - Want to put your friendships to the test? This is the game to do it! Permanent death only occurs when the ENTIRE party has fallen. So if your buddy gets knocked out feel free to run over and help him back up. Or not...

I could sit here and list off things that need to be fixed/updated/changed, but unfortunetly, the developer has said that he will no longer be working on this game, ever again. However, I'll go ahead and tell you why you shouldn't buy this game.

-Multiplayer?
You'd have better luck connecting to someone via a potato and a cracked bendy straw. This game does not have proper multiplayer. If you're like me and have not the slightest bit of insight on network programming, you're ♥♥♥♥ out of luck with this. I shouldn't have to look up a "how to" just to play the multiplayer of a game with friends.
-Tutorial?
Not really. Much like the multiplayer aspect, I had to look up a "how to" on... almost everything. From controls, to crafting, to what makes what, etc.. As much as I like games not holding your hand, even Dark Souls taught you the basic controls.
-Story? Character? Setting? Life?
Nope. You're just thrown into a world of caves full of monsters and NPC's that don't have the slightest bit of life to them, or any reason for them to be there other than that they just are. Why are there floating spike boulders and swinging vines holding axe blades? Just 'cause.
-Gameplay? Difficulty?
The inventory is awful. Extremely small, no management options, and, as mentioned before, nothing telling you how to use it. Supplies are frustratingly scarce, requires asinine amounts ingredients to make a thing, and good luck finding/obtaining them. Tired of using a stone pickaxe? Too bad, because now you can only pick caves that only spawn ores that you can't pick with your pickaxe. Have fun trying to get through cave 4 with your stone sword that's nearly broken, because you ain't getting anything better. The game also punishes exploration by having a set time in each cave. Take too much time, and you'll be instakilled by some creature that's twice as fast as you and is pretty much invulnerable. The towns may have something useful, but only if you have the insane amount of gold they want. Everything is randomly generated, btw.
-Music?
Heh, have fun with the 3-4 looping tracks that are in the game.

If you really want this game regardless of what I have to say about it, fine. It's your money. But at least wait for a sale. There's no sense in buying this game for ten dollars.

I bought this two years ago with the understanding the developer would work on this game.

If you read the last ''Update'' this developer admits he will no longer work on this game and move on. It's an unfinished product. Stay away from this developer as he cannot commit to finishing a product for consumers. It's unthinkable that any producer would say such a thing openly, but this is the gaming world and I guess ♥♥♥♥ is just different?

Anyway, do not buy this game. It is dead.

Honestly. Id love it if they could make multiplayer through steam instead of making me download a third party thing that could potentually give me a virus if i dont do it carefully. Other then that its fine

Video Review:

Magicite is a 2d side scrolling, survival, crafting game. The game includes a basic character editor that allows you to customize the look of your character as well assigning stats. The game includes basic stats, 2 extra traits, and a race/class that assigns extra bonuses like starting items and shop discounts.

The gameplay is simple, intuitive and fun. It consists of moving, jumping, double jumping, attacking, and using items. I had a lot of fun just jumping around, exploring, and attacking everything. While it’s simple to control, Magicite is still a challenge. Death is permanent, so when you die, you start over again. All of the biomes were neat to look at and felt unique. The monsters of each biome all moved differently and didn’t feel repetitive.

The crafting system, resource collection, and item options are easy and work well but I felt it was a little too similar to other games in the genre. In future releases I hope the developers differentiate themselves more in this category.

Aside from crafting and fighting, the player earns gold which can buy new items and experience which leads to level ups and new skills.

If you like a challenging scroller and can get past some similarities to other games, Magicite is really fun and I enjoyed my time with it.

This game is crazy F%@# hard at first until I picked up a couple of tricks, but once you get the hang of the game, it is easy as pie. Seriously! Just remember these couple of tips that WILL save your ♥♥♥. I know they have mine.

1.) Don't pick fights you can't win, especially when you just started in District one. Farm the mobs that don't fight back and proceed to the next area.
2.) Get a Wooden Pick Axe and Sword as fast as possible. Then, get a bow as fast as possible. (You have to kill Spiders in the Forest District, or you have to get lucky with the cuttable grass on the ground to get the cowebs.)
3.) Sometimes you just have to abandon that ore/chest that is surrounded by monsters. :/
4.) Once you get a bow, proceed to ♥♥♥♥ everything. You will win most fights if you stay at a range.

Pros:
+ Fun, combat is more about moving correctly than having godly equipment most of the time, specially early on.
+ Permadeath (on singleplayer)
+ Cute graphics
+ Challenging
+ Plenty of unlockables with different effects

Cons:
- Lacks any real game options customization other than resolution.
- A lot of things are unexplained and not very intuitive at first, such as altars (I thought I was buying a very expensive armor honestly) and town NPC crafting. Some items could stand to sell for more, specially potions and crafted items. (Everything seems to sell for the same or about the same price)
- Map randomization is bland, all maps have the same boring, horizontal design with different colors/backgrounds/trees. Could use more vertical variance along with different stage shaping.
- Inventory management sucks since your inventory always feels one row too short, specially when opening treasure
- Crafting system is clunky, time-consuming, and could use improvements (can't combine 2 sticks on the same square, this is made worse by the poor inventory space) Recipes for the more advanced items would also help.
- Need to unlock ANY sort of customization, could add colors to characters?
- Netplay is laggy for the player not hosting if your distance isn't short
- Can revive teammate indefinitely in netplay with 1hp as long as one of you is alive

I really want to like this game but it feels like an early access at the moment. Hopefully newer patches will make the game more fun and polished, but as it is right now it doesn't feel worth a full price.

Edit: I have been unbanned after a discussion with the developer, take that as you will!

Despite this game being Early Access, I would 100% recommend it already.
I've only given this game about an hour of play with two friends but already I am a little bit in love with it.
The game combines elements from Platformers, RPG's and roguelikes to create a fantastic little indie game.

The gameplay is rather simply to fight, craft and quest your way through various randomly generated dungeons. Unlike most platformers this game isn't a rush and hack'n'slash. You have to craft your own weapons, potions and food in order to survive which sounds simple but can get challenging quickly.
Playing with more than one person we quickly found out if we didn't share our resources we would die within minutes. Also, the friendly-fire meant instead of just spamming the attack button we actually had to watch what we were doing/who we were attacking.
The crafting list already has a fair few items on it, I am sure you can find the list somewhere but I rather enjoyed guessing what would work with what, which gave the game a nice survival feel.
The game is hard though. If you're playing with others you will need a way to communicate, and being in Early Access in-game chat isn't implemented yet.
And because this game is still Early Access there ARE bugs, but none that are gamebreaking (that I have encountered), it is fully playable, and enjoyable.

So far, I can't find much to fault about this game at all. The developer has been consistent with his work on the game but has also been consistent with his updates on Kickstarter too (19 since November 19th) which for me is always a good sign for games in Early Access.
For £6.99 you can't go wrong with a game this fun.

I loved this game. It was charming, fun to play and, at times, very tense. But after ages with no updates, me and the friend I played with gave up on this. Finally, after some time, the devs post a update, adding in some new things. BUT with a game out that is basically Magicite plus Terraria (I'm sorry if I'm wrong on this, as I haven't played it, only looked at screenshots) called Roguelands, the devs, or should I say dev, quits development on a game that many people have enjoyed, and after one or two major updates (that I personally have seen), saying he needs to expand. If you want to try this, go ahead, but don't pay full price for it. Buy it somewhere cheap, or mooch off a friend who owns it. THIS GAME IS DEAD!

Well.. i am a big fan of pixel art nice games but this.. this is a abomination of the "genre". You start with one character with extremely few customization options and you get the same weapon every time you die. Which you do a lot because everything in the so called levels is out to get you. Killing bees, rhinos, little green fleas.. So only one bad weapon and lots of hard hitting monsters.

Pros: the menu intro effect and maybe music. Thats all good about this game.
Cons: The collisions are bad, the movement is impredictible, the camera view is so weird sometimes you don't know where you gonna land, the enemies are too tough and you cannot really hit them proper.

I wish this developer would stop making this kind of bad mechanic and dull game in this beautiful genre of pixel art games.
