What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“The instant feedback from Steam players allows us to reshuffle our priorities during development to make an even better game. During the Early Access period the game will most certainly contain a selection of bugs, glitches, and issues that can impact a traditional game experience. If you do buy the game and come across something odd, please tell us in the forums.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“A tricky question! While we could give a date right now, it would almost definitely be wrong, longer than we predict we’d imagine! However, after a few months in Early Access the answer to this question will become a little clearer.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“In Early Access you will be able to drive, explore and trade throughout Germany & the CSFR. Already, the player can make changes to their vehicle with millions of combinations available to affect vehicle performance. As we progress through Early Access we plan to let the player drive through 1990’s renditions of Hungary, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria and Turkey. Early Access will be an insight into the core mechanics of Jalopy and from here we plan to build around this core with feedback from the community.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Pre-Alpha. Its early days and a good time to adopt if you want to get involved with helping jalopy take form. You’ll have Germany and CSFR as your playground and a car to build, maintain and upgrade.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price may increase with significant content updates. We will let everyone know if the price is expected to rise before it increases.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Once we get into Early Access we’re going to be looking at the most important features within the first week or two of release. From here we will create a development roadmap so that everyone can visualise where the game is heading and can get involved. Of course, do say hi to us in the Steam forums and let us know your thoughts on the game.”

NEW UPDATE: Welcome To Hungary - Spray Paint, Odometer, Decals, Scrapyard

Hello everyone,

Today, repairs on the bridge to Hungary have been completed. This means you can drive your very own Laika 601 Deluxe across the Hungary route right now! We are looking forward to seeing players share their screenshots as they explore. However, the new route is not the only addition, there are a variety of features that have been added to compliment the Hungary update.

Spray Paints
The spray can is our first new addition. You will be able to purchase these from your Laika Dealership. However they can only stock a limited number of supplies so you’ll need to visit the shop often to make sure they have the colour you want.

If you have a red coat of paint on your Laika 601 Deluxe, you can spray a blue paint over it to mix the two colours and create a purple variant. Experimenting with colour mixing allows you to create some great personal designs.

You’ll also be able to spray paint the interior of your Laika 601 Deluxe

For those looking for a stylistic sheen, then you are going to want to slap some metallic paint on your Laika 601 Deluxe.

And finally, a special addition to the spray paint are the Decal boxes. The decal boxes allow for more customisation options for your Laika 601 Deluxe and come in several variants. From a classic checkerboard roof to flames.

The decal system is more than likely to be expanded upon throughout Early Access. Do let us know what kind of decals you would like to have in the comments below.

Odometer
A big request from players has been to keep track of the distance traveled via an Odometer. We’re pleased to reveal that this is a part of the update.

Country branded items
Each region will now have their own brand identity as you travel across the three areas. Coffee from one region will have a graphic change to make players feel like they are truly entering another country. The Petrol stations now also change visually depending on the location.

New spawning system for abandoned cars
Abandoned cars now spawn more dynamically in the world. Eagle eyed drivers will need to keep an eye out for these as they can hold some valuable engine parts or replacement wheels.

The scrapyard
When selecting a route, you may come across a scrapyard. If you have the tools, you can fix the mechanism at the front of the gate and enter the scrap yard to search for engine parts. Be cautious as using your own engine parts is a big risk of getting yourself stranded… But don’t you want to know what’s inside!?

New main menu background
The games menu now remembers where you have last saved and will create a background image to match the next area.

New music
Jeremy has produced some excellent new tracks for Jalopy. You will be able to listen to them in the main menu or even in game on the radio. We hope you enjoy them and hope that as the game continues to grow, Jeremy will continue to provide some new music for the game.

You can head over to Jeremy’s website below:

https://jeremywarmsley.wordpress.com/music/

Weight limit in the manual
The car manual has gone through a small overhaul. Various texture issues have been addressed and we’ve added some more functionality. Towards the back end of the manual you can check the weight limit of your car.

The uncle will now remain at the home garage
Unfortunately, the uncle has been causing some severe issues and we’ve had to ask him to stay at home. He may join you in the journey for the future but for now, he’ll simply walk you through the tutorial and then leave the car so you can journey without him.

Hungary
And of course, Hungary! We’ve held back on revealing too much so players can explore the new country. However, we have created a brief summary video that shares some of the features mentioned above and just a couple of shots of the Hungary landscape.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TL-2VNX8xsk

We hope you enjoy exploring Hungary, we will be keeping an eye in the forums for any bugs or issues so please do let us know if you experience anything out of the ordinary. We hope you enjoy the update, the next major update planned is for the country of Yugoslavia.

- New Weather effects

Known possible issues:
- One of our machines had experienced some crashing when interacting with certain items. We nailed this down to directx9 on that machine. But it was working well on other machines. When launching on DirectX 11, there were no more crashes. We have added an option when loading the game to select which DirectX version you would like to launch the game in. if you experience any crashes, it might be that you have to choose a different DirectX at launch
- Black screen when changing graphical options – If this happens, alt tab out and force the game to close. The game will remember your graphical settings even if you force a close.
- Low FPS – Some users are still running the game with V Sync on and highest graphical settings. Turning V Sync off significantly decreases FPS loss at night (our machines here run at a minimum of 50FPS at night and experience upwards of 120FPS during the day).
- Passport at border – Sometimes the game will not allow you to pick up the passport once you get to a border patrol. This seems to be an issue when completing an entire run from start to Hungary. The workaround for this is to save and exit if you are unable to pick up the passport, loading up will fix the issue. We are looking to fix this.

As always, if you come across any issues do let us know in the forums and we will do everything we can to help.

UPDATE 22nd JULY 2016:
Hi everyone,

Thank you to all who have been patient with us and provided us with reproduction steps for certain issues. We have made progress and anticipate a few new fixes in this latest hotfix. The fixes include the list below:

- Fixed several issues where battery functionality at 0% was causing components to think that they could still work (caused hazard and engine horrible sound bugs
- Fixed passport being broken after crossing the first border
- Fixed a lack of collisions on the Germany to CSFR border tunnels
- Uncle should no longer complain if the radio is too loud
- Rain Audio should no longer continue into sunny days
- Fixed a decal still having debug text present
- Using the scrapyard engine no longer destroys components but instead uses 1 lt fuel, and 10% battery charge
- Scrapyard engine gates now better displays information regarding what is wrong with the gate engine
- No more tiny tyres on abandoned cars
- Scrapyard items no longer mess up engine components in the car
- Fixed some interaction issues between removing a component from its holder and placing it down too quickly
- Fixed inventory save/load issue: Inventory wasn't clearing the recorded data for the country you purchased a tradeable good in, so when swapping that out with another item (I.e a bottle of water) it would try to assign a country ID to it and get stuck.

If anyone has any issues, please do keep letting us know. We thank you all for getting involved in the development of Jalopy.

UPDATE 25th JULY 2016
Hello everyone,

Jalopy patch has gone live today. We’re looking at ironing out some of the bugs that players have discovered. This may not be all, but please bear with us as we are still working on them.

This hotfix includes:
- Fixed an issue where the roof rack caused a save and load corruption
- Fixed an error where Save & quit, Restart and Return Home options in pause menu would not work
- Fixed an issue with items in the inventory becoming unparented when trying to pick them up with your hands full
- Fixed an issue with loading from motels causing a path finding loop which resulted in a performance drop
- Fixed an issue where doors would not have bells
- Fixed uncle talking when not in car and telling the player to put items back
- Fixed interior rain audio still playing on the next day after rain conditions
- Fixed uncle appearing in the car the following day after playing the tutorial

We are still working towards fixing some of the more serious issues. So please keep checking back as we look to issue another patch this week. We thank every one of you who has helped provide reproduction steps so that we can try to locate and eliminate these issues!

About This Game

***JALOPY IS AN EARLY ACCESS TITLE. THE GAME IS IN A CONSTANT STATE OF IMPROVEMENT AND IS NOT FINISHED. PURCHASING THE GAME NOW WILL HELP SUPPORT THE GAME AND WILL ALLOW US TO CONTINUE WORKING ON JALOPY TO REFINE, ADD MORE CONTENT, IMPROVE QUALITY AND IMPLEMENT REQUESTS FROM THE COMMUNITY***

Navigate miles and miles of tyre changing, fuel burning, carburettor busting, mud clattering terrain, through night and day, rain and shine. Adapt to whatever the procedurally generated world of Jalopy can throw at you.

Upgrade, maintain and care for your Laika 601 Deluxe motor vehicle. Keep close attention to everything from the state of your tyres, the condition of your engine and even the space in your trunk. Repair each aspect of your scrappy little car and install unique upgrades to deal with the changing world. Everything from cargo weight to the condition of your carburettor will determine how your car performs on the open road.

The rise of capitalism brings an economical conundrum. Scavenge for scraps to make a small return of investment, or become a baron of the open road and smuggle contraband under the eyes of border patrols to make a sizable profit.

Developer Greg Pryjmachuk worked on the Formula 1 franchise from 2009 through to 2014. In late 2014, Greg began work on this new driving simulation featuring the fictional Laika 601 Deluxe car; reminiscent of the East German “Trabbie”, it will need much love and care to keep it going on this memorable road trip!

As the time of writing this i can NOT recommend this game based uppon the issues I have encoured.
seems to me there is a lack of support since the last hot fix was almost 3 months ago.

pros
-good concept
-fun to play when not crashing

cons
-to many bugs that cause crashes or have to start a new game
-needs more content/better ways to earn cash
-xinput support would be nice
-more frequent updates/patches

I have a strange feeling this game is not going to see alot of updates for patches and for a game that is almost unplayable because of bugs this is why i can not recommend it.

Great game! Has its glitches here and there but you gotta take it for what it is. Pretty simplistic and interesting. Different take on the games we see every day that's for sure.

The game is fun and chill, but where are the updates? I give it a negative cause it seems like they just ran away with our money, there is 1-2 hours worth playing with this at this state. Dont buy it now, not worth it.

If you're looking for a positive review, then you're in the wrong place, HOWEVER, if you're here for a tremendous chicken Stir Fry recipe, THEN LOOK NO FURTHER!

- Serves 4
- 10 mins to prepare and 10 mins to cook
- 325 calories / serving
- Healthy

INGREDIENTS:

- 1 orange, zested and juiced
- 2tbsp soy sauce
- 2tbsp sesame oil
- 250g (8oz) tender stem broccoli
- 5cm (2in) piece root ginger
- 1tbsp sunflower oil
- 1 garlic clove, finely sliced
- 1 red pepper, deseeded and thinly sliced
- 150g Straight To Wok Noodles
- 400g (13oz) chicken fillet, cut into thin slices

METHOD

Step 1 - Mix together the orange zest and juice, soy sauce and sesame oil and set aside.

Step 2 - Blanch the broccoli in boiling water for 2 minutes, then drain well and set aside.

Step 3 - Finely shred the ginger. Then heat a large frying pan or wok, add the sunflower oil, heat it until sizzling, and fry the ginger till it's crisp.

Step 4 - When it's done, remove with a slotted spoon. Add the chicken and garlic, and stir-fry until just browned. Remove the meat using a slotted spoon and set aside.

Step 5 - Add the red pepper and broccoli and stir-fry for around 2-3 minutes until it's just tender. Add the soy sauce mixture, bring it to the boil then return the chicken to the pan and heat through. Serve with noodles.

Was not what I thought it would be.....

But when i first saw this game I didn't really know what kind of game this would be at all. This game targets a very specific kind of audiance in my opinion and I was not apart of that audiance, only play this game if you like driving and managing your resources to fix and fuel up your car. I would not reccomend this game to anyone who primarily plays action games for this game takes time and planning.

11:30 at night; the country road stretches out before me for miles, yet with my low-powered headlights I can only see a few dozen feet ahead of me. The mud is so caked on over my windshield, I squint through a small portion not covered in order to see ahead. Almost at the next gas station, just a few more minutes - but my engine suddenly begins to smoke before dieing, only enough fuel to pull to the side of the road. A frustrated sigh, I turn on my hazards before stepping out onto the road beginning to walk by foot to the station when it starts raining. Perfect.

When you hear the term 'roguelike', you usually envision an RPG or a shooter in which you play until you die (and you will eventually die) before restarting with your saved progress and taking another shot. I would have to say that even if the developers of Jalopy don't classify their game as such, it's probably the first roguelike driving simulator I've ever played.

How can a game about driving a beaten up old car endlessly down a road with far less graphic fidenlity and less linear routes than something like Euro Truck Simulator be fun? Mainly it's because this game initially comes off as very basic, it's actually very, very deep.

Really, the car is you - that is to say you play a human driving the car and you can get out and sleep in Motels, or purchase coffee in gas stations, but really the car is your identity. It starts out very basic with a cheap engine, small fuel tank and standard road tires but over time, you can earn enough money to upgrade everything about it. Just like leveling up an RPG character and distributing skill points, you're improving this care on your endless journey and yet it's no less compelling. Do you find yourself running out of gas frequently? Get a larger capacity fuel tank. Not going fast enough? Upgrade your engine. Every component can be swapped out and changed, tailoring the car to your own personal preferences.

As a player, you're limited to what you can carry in your hands at any given time, and you're limited to what you can bring in the trunk of your car. You can usually fit the necessities - an extra fuel can or two, a repair kit, some water for coolant and some oil - but what about that box you found at the side of the road filled with coffee. You could dump a fuel can to make room and sell it for profit, but what happens if you run out of gas...

The intro story is farily basic at this point - you and your uncle go on a road trip from old Eastern Bloc Berlin. Really though, the provided story simply acts as a launch point for a player run story. You look back at experiences you have on this trip as the things that really stick out in your mind, like the time your car ran out of fuel under an overpass on the Autobahn and you had to walk 10 minutes in the pouring rain and pitch black to the nearest gas station to get a fuel can.

And let's talk about the atmosphere for a moment - the graphics are heavily stylized, very dark and simple which only seem to add to the game's charm. There's nothing more cozy than being in your car as the rain pelts down outside, muffled slightly thanks to the excellent audio design work. The cheap motels you stop off at in each town and dark, almost too dark but then you're not really there to sight-see; you're there to catch a few hours of sleep before hitting the road once more.

Being in Early access, the game is not without it's bugs; drivers tend to ignore your hazards and will sometimes plough into your car while you're parked on the side of the road trying to repair your engine. Some objects don't work some of the time, and you can sometimes find yourself trying to highlight the object you want when there are several, larger items in the way. The dialogue your uncle rambles on with would be interesting but due to the lack of voice work, it requires you to actually read it; something that is near impossible to do while driving down the road.

Jalopy has all of the ingredients of a strangely quirky yet interesting game; and given enough time and polish, these elements could come together to make it something very special. Even right now at $10, it offers up a decent amount of gameplay and replayability that's sure to keep you entertained even while slogging down a pitch black country road with a gas canister.

So i went ahead and purchased this game of £9.99 at the suggestion of a friend. I usually stear clear of Alpha games since they can often take a direction less than favourable, but Jallopy seems to be the exception. If i could draw up a comparison of what i think this game will become once complete... I would say Papers please, only your attempting to get through the borders.

As it stands Jallopy is a simple game, it has a fair few bugs in it which is to be expected of a alpha title, but what it does have is a core mechanic which is fun. You keep your car running and head home on the open road. Your cars basically a ♥♥♥♥ box which doesnt suit its purpose but you attain money, upgrades and items to keep that car trucking on. navigating a rather simple but some how beautiful empty world.

Its not the core mechanics which make this game fun for me, but the potential. My imagination runs away with me when i play it. because thats what this game is, an investment into the opotunity.

Obviously there are things lacking in the game, again thats to be expected, lack of npcs, no real driving mechanics in the game, (well there is but its slightly dodge). I feel like the game is letting itself down not having an option to smuggle goods through the borders, nor having any evaluation on the players driving (maybe npcs could report the car to authorities and when at a border it causes them to check the car for ilicit materials. The possibilities are endless.

For what it is, jallopy is a decent alpha game, i can't see me loosing hours and hours in it as it stands but it will be a game i revisit often as its updated just to see where we end up.

It's very fun, even if you can figure out how to get 40000 marks, its still challenging, also, as a quick heads up, stock up on as much crud as you can get in Dresden. Only issue I see is that occasionally, my car flips upside down, and it's frustrating, can you fix that please, and a figure out a way so that the engine doesn't wear out as much. Overall, a fantastic game, lots of potential.
