What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Universe Sandbox ² is still in active development, but it's already a fully-featured space simulator that is an improvement in every way over the original. After over four years of work, we're proud of what we have to show, and we know many fans are eager to try it out.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“At least another year. But it's hard to give an accurate estimate. Building a universe simulator is a job that's never complete.

We have a long list of features and improvements that we're very excited about implementing, and which will keep us busy for a long time to come.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Some of the features we'd like to add:
  • Space megastructures
  • Basic life simulation
  • More dynamic terraforming & improved climate simulation
  • Better collisions on a wider range of scales
  • Missions and objectives
  • Steam Workshop support
  • Achievements
  • Language localization
  • Improved human scale mode
  • HTC Vive support (investigating supporting Oculus Touch)

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“For over a year alpha testers have poured hours into exploring Universe Sandbox ². It is already a fully-featured simulation.

We've fixed most of the serious stability issues and have made a lot of progress on optimizations for a range of hardware. Because it is a large-scale sandbox, though, it does have its share of bugs and could use polish in many areas.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We have no plans for changing the base price of Universe Sandbox ² at this time.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We actively seek community feedback from the in-game survey as well as from our forums and social media.

Community feedback helps us prioritize our long list of planned features and focus on fixing the worst bugs and issues.

We also add simulations and features based on community requests, like the recently added Game of Thrones sim and a simulation of the 2003 close encounter between Earth and Apollo 12's third stage rocket.

In the future we plan to integrate Steam Workshop for user-generated content and explore modding possibilities.”

Alpha 19 is Coming Soon

If you've been following along the past few months, you know that the road to Alpha 19 has been filled with obstacles and unexpected twists and turns.

The good news is that it looks like we've rounded the last bend, and there’s just a bit more to go. Alpha 19 is coming soon.

It's taken us longer than we had hoped, but our continuing progress on it means that it's also becoming even more awesome than we had hoped.

Our biggest new physics features are the new tidal forces, which include Roche limit and tidal heating, and the new fragmentation and particle system. These big changes brought a lot of issues with them, but they've also made simulations much more dynamic, exciting, and realistic.

And while half of the team has been busy working through these big new features, the other half has been fixing and improving other areas of Universe Sandbox ².

We have a list of bug fixes over a page long that will make their way into Alpha 19. Some of these are small edge-case bugs, and others have been longstanding issues that we've finally had the time to address, like fixing the editing and locking for mass, radius, and density.

What else is coming?

  • New budget system for better fragment & particle performance
  • New explosion effects
  • New music tracks
  • Improved volatile simulation allowing the disintegration of whole planets
  • Improved selection tools (selectable particles, supernovas, & more)
  • New historical sims
  • A few new & improved models for human-sized objects
  • New supernova visuals & simulation effects
  • And much more...
For a full list of what's already been added and fixed in the preview versions of Alpha 19, see our What's New.

About This Game

Universe Sandbox ² is a physics-based space simulator that allows you to create, destroy, and interact on an unimaginable scale.

It merges real-time gravity, climate, collision, and material interactions to reveal the beauty of our universe and the fragility of our planet. Universe Sandbox ² is the long awaited sequel to the original Universe Sandbox.

Universe Sandbox ² includes the desktop version and a new VR mode with support for the HTC Vive. This is a free, automatic update.

Simulate Gravity

N-body simulation at almost any speed using Newtonian mechanics. Real science, real physics, no supercomputer required.

Collide Planets & Stars

Epic, mind blowing collisions of massive planetary bodies.

Model Earth's Climate

Watch sea ice grow and recede with the seasons because of the tilt of the Earth: change the tilt and change the seasons. Or move the Earth farther from the Sun and freeze the entire planet.
Learn more...

Terraform Planets

Add carbon dioxide to a planet's atmosphere to heat it up. Then add water...

Deform Surfaces

Impact planets with asteroids and comets and leave behind massive, molten craters.

Supernova a Star

Make a star evolve by cranking up its age or mass, then watch a supernova unfold.

And more...

  • Material System - build planets out of Hydrogen, Iron, Rock, & Water
  • Solar flares & volatile trails
  • Procedurally generated stars & planets
  • Pulsars
  • Light-warping black holes
  • Dark matter

Very good... but the only problem is that there is no steam workshop... it would be so cool if you could download other people's universes.

I love the simulation. It's done well and the are almost no glitches.
Something that I would like to see in it though is being able to go into a mode that alows you to fly a spacecraft aroud the creation that you made.

I love this game. I have always enjoyed anything that has to do with astronomy, so this has been easily one of my favorite games. I have no problems with it only want things added that would make it just that much cooler. If you have the money I'd say get it.

Day 1; Gave Saturn more asteriods.
Day 2: I decided that Saturn didn't have enough asteroids, added mars.
Day 3: Mars sucks up most of the asteroids causing massive explosions.
Day 4: Saturn is all alone.

A grate game for space lovers like me and probably you. If your reading this.
Get this game it will change the way you think of SPACE.
Do something like terraforming or maybe even destroying the solar system.
Then after your done playing for the first time look up into the sky at night and think. That your creation can be out there somewhere weather dats a good or bad thing well you decide.

I recommend this game.

Things i didn't like? hummmmmmm well the game can be a bit laggy at times like under a !SUPERNOVA! But then it is a supernova soo ya. it's gona be laggy no matter what it's gonna lag under a SUPERNOVA... SUPER...NOVA
