Assignment 0

CS/ECE 354, Fall 2003

Send e-mail questions to Eric, erobinso@cs.wisc.edu
Due Friday September 12, before 5pm.

Purpose

This assignment is intended to give experience using a Unix operating system and introduce the software tools used in CS/ECE 354.

Statement

This assignment requires you to use several different software tools, including a simulator, e-mail, web browser, and editor, to obtain answers that will be turned in. Do the following 3 things:

  1. We have written a SAL program for you. You need to copy the program, modify it, run the program using the simulator, and make note of the modified program's output. The program source code is in the file
    /p/course/cs354-common/public/bin/a0.s
Copy the file to your own directory and run the simulator on your copy of the source code. For information about how to run the simulator, read further under Notes below. Once this works, use an editor to modify the program by changing the value 10 to 15 in the two places where 10 appears. Rerun the simulator and take note of the modified program's output.
  2. Almost everything you need to know about CS/ECE 354 is posted on your section's web page. You need to run a web browser, find your section's home page, and make note of the TA names and their office hours.
  3. The instructor and TAs send important messages about the course via e-mail. It is expected that you will read your e-mail often. We will send you e-mail by Tuesday of the second week of classes. You need to read your e-mail, and make note of who sent the message (who it is from) and what it says. It will contain several questions. Do not reply to the e-mail. Instead, use an editor to record your answers to the questions.

Once you have done these 3 things, use an editor to add the following information to your file containing the answers to the e-mail questions. Add the modified program's output and the TA names and office hours. Also, place your name, section number, and student ID at the beginning of the file. Save the file, since this is what will be turned in for this assignment.

Notes

  1. We use a simulator to run programs. Run the simulator with
    /p/course/cs354-common/public/bin/simp a0.s
where a0.s is an example name for the file containing the SAL source code to be simulated. You may change the name of the source code file. For the long term, you will want to add the directory /p/course/cs354-common/public/bin to your path. See the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) portion of the course home page on the web on how to do this. After your path has been modified, you will be able to run the simulator with
    simp a0.s
instead of typing the entire path name to the simulator.
  2. If you are already familiar with using the Unix operating system, then this assignment should take less than an hour to complete. Students new to Unix may need to spend much more time. Attend a Unix tutorial as soon as possible if Unix is new to you. Some online documentation is available in the CS1000 handout. It can be accessed on the web at
    http://www.cs.wisc.edu/csl/cs1000/
or purchased from the DoIT tech store for approximately $2.50.
  3. You will need to figure out how to log in and use the Unix commands ls, cd, and cp. You will also need to use an editor. You may use any editor you like. Common choices are emacs, vi, and pico.
  4. Please note that the e-mail we send goes to the account given to you for this course. It does not go to your student account.

Handing In the Assignment

Turn in your file containing your answers by running the script
/p/course/cs354-common/public/bin/handin0 assmt0
where assmt0 is an example name of the file that you wish to turn in.

The handin script submits your answers for you. No printout will be turned in.
