Editorial Reviews

VOYA, October 2015 (Vol. 38, No. 4) - Jennifer Miskec
Nineteen-year-old Jenn McAllister (AKA Jennxpenn) is a YouTube personality and has been since she was in middle school. This book is a combination of three things: McAllister’s own success story—a humorous account of how she went from filming home video on her parents’ old video camera to running multiple YouTube stations and acting in films; a how-to manual for teens interested in performing for the internet—how to be a successful YouTuber while dealing with internet negativity, for example; and a teen-talking-to-teens words of wisdom guide—from things teens worry about but should not and finding good friends, for example, to tips for living on your own, like keeping your apartment clean, fixing plumbing problems, and having a spare key. With lots of behind the scenes photos and chapters about both the good and the bad sides of the internet business and of fame and success at a young age, fans of McAllister’s will enjoy her seemingly honest and open life story. McAllister is self-deprecating and silly, so her perspective will be non-threatening and welcome by young readers. A more cynical view of the text will not be able to ignore the triteness to a lot of what the nineteen-year-old has to say, but it is well-meaning and harmless advice that reflects McAllister’s every-girl brand. Teen fans of YouTube lifestyle and prank shows will know and enjoy McAllister’s life-writing. Reviewer: Jennifer Miskec; Ages 11 to 15.
