10. POPULAR SUPPORT FOR THE ARAB CAUSE" IS
GROWING IN LEBANON. MOSLEM LEADERS ARE CALLING FOR
A "HOLY WAR" AND POLITICAL LEADERS ARE MAKING STATEMENTS
CALLING FOR ARAB UNITY. SECURITY FORCES HAVE
SO FAR BEEN ABLE TO CONTROL DEMONSTRATIONS, BUT TENSION
IS INCREASING. LAST NIGHT A BOMB WAS EXPLODED
A BACK OF THE US EMBASSY BREAKING MANY WINDOWS BUT
CAUSING NO SERIOUS DAMAGE. THE US AMBASSADOR TO LEBANON
FEELS THE SITUATION IS VERY VOLATILE AND GETTING
WORSE.

11. THE UN SECURITY COUNCIL WILL MEET AT 3:00
P.M. TOMORROW TO CONSIDER THE CRISIS. A RESOLUTION
DRAFTED ON 27 MAY CALLS FOR AN EXPRESSION OF CONCERN
AT THE INCREASING GRAVITY OF THE SITUATION, URGES ALL
THE PARTIES CONCERNED TO ACT WITH SPECIAL RESTRAINT,
TO FOREGO BELLIGERENCE AND TO AVOID ALL OTHER ACTIONS
WHICH COULD INCREASE TENSION, AND ECIDES TO CONSIDER
THE SITUATION FURTHER AS A MATTER OF URGENCY. IN LIGHT
OF YESTERDAY'S EGYPTIAN REQUEST FOR A MEETING, THE US
IS ATTEMPTING TO GAIN SUPPORT FOR A TOUGHER DRAFT RESOLUTION
WHICH WOULD SPECIFICALLY MENTION THE STRAIT OF
TIRAN. MEANWHILE, EGYPT HAS APPARENTLY INTERPRETED
CANAS LEDING ROLE IN THE COUNCIL LAST WEEK AS ONE
OF SUPPORT FOR THE ISRAELIS, AND HE ORDERED THE CANADIAN
CONTINGENT OF UNEF TO LEAVE EGYPT WITHING 48 HOURS.
