Too many hidden unknowns

Posted by: Disappointed from on 10/05/2015There should be a clarification as to what "buyer beware" entails. We read many reviews but did not come across a couple of very disappointing "features" of this machine although I suppose the overall price of this machine should have been a dead give-away. First of all, when you try to update to the most current version of your operating system, MS tries to FORCE Microsoft 10 on you whether or not you want it. Luckily for us, my husband was able to stop the downloading/updating of 10, every time, before it completely took over my machine. I didn't see anything about this in the "Specifications?" We use Apache Open Office for our office applications. This machines does NOT allow that software to be installed on your machine. So guess what? The ONLY office product is the Office Home and School that does not make you renew your "membership" every year. That was $120.00. This wasn't in "Specifications" either. Before I bought this Asus touch screen I used an iPad. I found that my carpal tunnel did not flare up when I used a touch screen. So finding this compact machine was a welcome relief for my hands. I write a lot of documents but the iPad does not have USB drives where I can save my work which was why I needed a PC (plus we don't have AirPrint machines). I don't quite trust the Cloud thing just yet. I had a doctor's appointment out of state in 2013, but he couldn't see me because the Cloud was down that day. We ended up having to stay an extra week because of this as he sees patients only 1 day per week. I didn't want to give this Asus one star because it does have features for which I was looking in a PC. Keyboard is good size, screen is good size, love the touch screen/mouse option. I also didn't want to give this Asus five stars as I was disappointed with the functions of which nothing was mentioned until AFTER we opened the box and had to update the 8.1 originally installed. A mere second slower and 10 would have automatically been installed, WITHOUT my permission! It does run a bit slower than the iPad to which I was accustomed, but against our better judgment, we installed WebRoot per the Best Buy clerk's recommendation, instead of relying on our own past experience and used Kasparsky for protection. We won't do that again. While I will recommend to a friend, I will absolutely let them know the drawbacks to this PC.

Solid product

Does everything I need

Posted by: Smartmoney from on 10/01/2015The laptop is cheap in a good way. If you find it on sale it's worth the price. I needed a laptop with Ethernet port and this one has it. Now the bad. The battery is not replaceable (internal) and if you decide to crack it open a replacement costs as much as the laptop itself.
