Just a warning - ordered twice, both modules bad

Posted by: Tomted from Portland,Or on 10/06/2012Normally Crucial memory is fine but these 2 modules - 2 separate shipments (the second a re-order) - were both bad. Install was for an Asus Netbook, replacing a 1 GB module. I ordered Memory Master instead. Downside: Taking longer to receive and more delay for the upgrade. Upside: Best Buy is great on returns -- just take it and order docs to the store. No issues at all with returns.

For a laptop's RAM's bottleneck, it works great!

Easy to install, and it's just plug and forget about everything.
The "windows experience" went only from 4.5 to 4.7 in the RAM memory, but that punctuation is kind of random I'd say, and doesn't really measure how good or bad you feel the "windows experience". I've really and clearly felt the change of this upgrade.
I used it for a Compaq laptop 2009, which had only 1GB ram, and I use it for average things (facebook, YouTube, movies, internet, etc.) but it was becoming a nightmare of terrible slowness, which I guess it always was, but over time I've become more and more aware of its annoyance.
In case you don't know (as I didn't myself a few months ago), nowadays computers usually need more or less between 1.7 and 2.6 GB of RAM. If you have 16GB of RAM, you are probably wasting 13 of them. But if you have only 1GB of RAM, you're going to suffer and feel a lot of unnecessary slowness. Upgrade then. And it's very cheap for the RAM actually.
RAM's SPEED
This is important too. My RAM was 667MHZ of speed, and I bought these ones, which are 800MHz. I know that may be stupid since probably nothing faster than 667MHz is useful because there must be some other bottlenecks in the computer which keep the RAM to work faster than 667. But just in case, I tried the next one faster (800), since I don't know the limits of this laptop. I'm not that expert in computers.
I'm telling you this in case, for instance, your computer came with 800MHz RAM, don't replace it with 677MHz RAM. It'll work, but probably a little bit slower. Just check the speed too.
BTW, there's a free app online to check EVERYTHING about your RAM.

If not available anymore, do some google research. It's very useful this tool, since it tells you even how many memory slots you have, how much memory each one supports, which kind of memory you already have installed and its features and details, etc.
As you may know, if you have only 1GB RAM now, when the computer needs some more (and that's for example any time you keep opened more than a couple of tabs in the internet navigator; which means: always), it uses the so called "virtual memory", which is nothing but using the hard drive as RAM. That shouldn't be a problem, but actually is since HD are sooo slow compared to RAM. Also, HD in laptops are many times slower (5400rpm) than desktop computers' HD (7200). Even if your hard drive is 7200, it doesn't matter, is SO much slower than RAM itself. Every time your computer goes for virtual memory, you're gonna feel it. Much slower. Which in my laptop was anytime since the start up.
So the whole point of a RAM upgrade is avoiding that your computer needs to use virtual memory.
If you go in Windows to your 'system monitor' (where those real time little graphics of system's performance are) and check how is doing your memory, and it says 80% or 90% or something like that, upgrade. In a healthy and relaxed computer should be, let's say, below 60% at most, and usually is below 40%/30%, so that you can forget about RAM forever whatever apps you're using, or however many tabs you have open at the same time in the internet navigator.
The RAM installation you'll find it really easy. You're only going to need those typical little screwdrivers that watchmakers use (I think you know what I mean), but only to open the case where the RAM is. Then, it's just a plug and play thing. No complication installation required at all. You run you're computer and it doesn't even tells you that new hardware is found. It just runs nicer, smoother. That's all.
You can find in YouTube a lot of videos of how to change your RAM chip set in your laptop. It's really easy. It was my first time too. 2 minutes.
I don't know if these crucial memories I bought are going to give problems in a few months. It doesn't look like they are, and so far they are perfect. Next upgrade is going to be the HD, to an SSD (which is on its way). That's more complicated to install. And after that, the bottleneck will be the computer itself: the processor and the graphics capacity, which are not changeable in a laptop as far as I know, so nothing I'll be able to do then but buying some top of the top new machine.
BTW, I upgraded from 1GB 677MHz memory, to 4GB (my laptop's maximum capacity). So I bought 2x2GB chip sets.
And yes, I'm definitely feeling the change, and the HD is also not suffering full time anymore, and only working when I load or save something.
With the cheapest delivery option, it arrived in only 3 business days.
I don't know if some expert will find the next stupid, but I actually feel that the computer heats up less now with the RAM upgrade. I guess, since the HD is doing much less effort now, that must be determinant in the overall temperature of the laptop, which usually they behave as very annoying little stoves. But I don't know, it's just a guess, and a subjective feeling on the temperature now.
I totally would recommend this product/upgrade to a friend, in the terms and conditions I explained above.

Not bad for old equipment
