Posted by: Tmsc from USA on 03/12/2015************************** FAST hard drive, no DVD-writer, bad BIOS Setup, Windows 7 Pro DVD missing Ethernet drivers, upgradeable to 8.1 Pro, install DVDs for both ************************** Actually, some of the specs are pretty good, and this met more of my requirements than most laptops being sold these days. It's got an Intel Core i-5 Dual-Core (average), 4GB of memory (actually below average, but that's plenty for multitasking...only gamers and serious video editors need more), a *7,200-RPM* (500 GB) Hard Disk Drive (AWESOME! What a difference in speed, ESPECIALLY backing up to an external device!), Intel HD integrated graphics (the best non-dedicated you can get on a laptop). It also came with Windows 7 (upgradeable to 8.1), which is what I wanted. Unfortunately, it does NOT have a DVD-*writer* as previously advertised (I see BestBuy has fixed all the listings, thank you). That drastically reduces the usefulness of the laptop. For this reason alone, I sent it back, after locating a better purchase! The display is not "full-HD" (1080p), but you can't tell -- the display is excellent, especially for a 14" screen. (It could be improved by a matte finish to reduce reflection and therefore eyestrain.) There's no number pad, as the screen is 14". There's no dedicated video (but for most people, the integrated Intel HD chip is fine unless you watch movies and TV shows). I like that they put some ports on the back to avoid putting much on the right side. *** The hardware doesn't have too many shortcomings, but the BIOS and HP website support are another story! *** Only after wiping creating my own partitions and re-installing Windows 7 did I discover there are no Ethernet drivers on the DVD! So then I had to install (unwanted) Windows 8 just to find and download them. I also had SEVERAL other unrecognized devices in "Devices" which required running several 3rd-party tools for Identification. [I used "SysInfo" (by DreamSoft, not the other one), Belarc Advisor, and Driver Navigator.] I could not find any drivers on HP's website, because it doesn't work. If you try to register, you can't, because when you type in and search for your model, it returns no results (but 3 duplicated buttons to view said non-results). Searching for drivers doesn't work, either. I only finally got the Ethernet to work after I found (I forget where) an ISO download of *ALL* Intel LAN drivers. (It's called something like "19_CD" but I don't remember exactly because I always rename downloads that have cryptic names.) That's not even the worst part! The BIOS Setup is *HORRIBLE* on HPs now! I"m not talking about UEFI vs. BIOS (I didn't get that far in my experiements) or hidden hotkeys to the BIOS Setup. I mean that you can't even access many of the settings when you get there! *IF THE OPTIONS SCROLL OFF THE SCREEN, YOU CAN'T EVEN VIEW THEM.* You can only scroll to options which are enabled for change, so stuff at the bottom and top is permanently NOT VIEWABLE on some screens. Even though it's graphical (you can use the mouse), you STILL CANNOT SCROLL beyond what's actually enabled for change. *** ALSO, A HUGE SECURITY RISK!!! *** The first time you log on, it AUTOMATICALLY INSERTS YOUR USER PASSWORD AS THE BIOS SETUP PASSWORD, and it can never be changed! You would not even be able to ENTER the BIOS setup! I had not set any password, and was trying *obvious defaults* like "password," "admin," "blank," and just leaving it blank. I don't know what stroke of genius promted me to try my Windows password! However, YOU CANNOT CHANGE THIS PASSWORD. The facility is there, but it just won't let you. And since I can't see/access everything, I can't set a boot password, which is the ultimate protection. I considered rating this HP a "1" because the shortcomings of HP's BIOS Setup are so serious, but I figured the nice hardware deserved something, so I gave it a "2." If not for the BIOS Setup and lack of DVD-*writer*, I would have given it a "4"...the best I could honestly give something without Full HD and dedicated graphics. So close, but so far away!
