One week before RAGBRAI and two weeks before the Big Island I felt the need to get some hillwork. In looking for mountain grades, altitude, and cooler temps a little closer than Flagstaff, weather.com said to head to Payson. So I left on Friday afternoon at 117 degrees and arrived at the 5300'+ in the 70 degree range.
Day 1: I appointed today to be the mountain biking day. I'd like to thank Kevin for the mountainbike trail recommendation although I didn't find the trail back down.
The 260 trailhead. |
It's a little hard to see, but doesn't this tree look like Charlie Brown's? |
My first vista from the top of Mollogan Rim. |

Right on the edge...no, Mom, this is not the trail. It's a great view of the way I went down! 6% grade at 35+ mph. I waved at some road bikes going up. |
Looking west you can see the trailhead right off of Hwy 260. |
My second goal of the trip was to find a creek to veg out for the afternoon. |

When some dark clouds started rolling overhead I decided to head back to Payson a little earlier than planned. After the hail and rain rolled through we had a beautiful evening for the Loose Canons, a blues and jazz group from Chicago. I also won a pair of tickets to see Steely Dan and Michael McDonald back in Phoenix! |

Day 2: This was the real prep for Iowa and Hawaii. Kevin's trailhead was also inadvertently the perfect place for riding on wide shoulders for loooong hills.
Good morning, Sunshine! This was a wicked hill to roll down, but a little slower to come up. |
Break time before I rolled back down the hill. |
AHHHHH! 32 miles later. |

One last parting shot. |
But wait! I spied a little movement out of the corner of my eye and see this 4" guy getting ready to catch some brunch. I wonder if he tastes like lobster? |
I'm sure he'd ruin someone's day coming around the wrong side of that rock (he's in between the three medium-sized rocks in the middle of the picture). |

A few shots of the way home. It was pretty hazy. |
